This spreadsheet only has one rookie spot and two to be re-rookied. It misses that Keane will be moving into a senior spot so that two rookie spots open up, thus giving us only 2 senior spots.

It misses it, because it hasn't been announced yet. For all we know, Toby Murray or Borlase will be upgraded. I agree it's most likely Keane.

Well that's a spanner - i would not be surprised at all if we try to trade back into this draft with a pick from a future draft or even split pick 4 if we feel the guy we want isn't there...

These moves gives us way more flexibility that's for sure. I'd be shocked if this wasn't planned prior to trade week, it was probably a matter of who we move to the rookie list.

Vader if above is right that’s 3 spots 🤷

4, Welsh and fingers crossed a trade up
Not happening. To re-rookie both players we need to upgrade a rookie (Most likely Keane). Only way we get an extra player is if one of Schoenberg/Burgess get signed elsewhere.

16 'rookies' to be redrafted across the league. just under 1000 games of experience. still remember when ramanauskas had to be given permission to be redrafted as a rookie. just get rid of it and expand the lists.
Or put an age restriction of say 23 yo on rookies …… that may be a bit difficult to administer, as you know a 24-26 yo state league player will fail to get an opportuniy

Maybe put a n AFL games played as a restriction …. maybe rookie spots are only open to players with fewer than 20 games

Perhaps Vader can put me straight here.
I see everyone saying we will upgrade Keane, why so ?
Can’t he still remain for two more years on the rookie list where his new contract
would by far be the most $ of all the rookie listed and only half of it would go towards the cap.
I’m missing something obviously or do people see something in the feel good factor of being main listed?

If things happen on draft night we may tell one of them sorry we had plans to keep you but due to such and such being available we pulled the trigger thank you for your service and we'll be paying out your contract.

Well it's what we all hope will happen

Nope... it's still only 2 spots in total, and -1 positions available on the rookie list. Doing the senior <-> rookie list shuffle doesn't change the overall number of vacancies, which remains at 2. It just changes where the vacancies are located.

We need to upgrade 1 rookie, which will leave us with 2 vacancies on the senior list and 0 on the rookie list.

Yes, but the club hasn't made that announcement yet. The spreadsheet is accurate, given the information released to date by the club.

Can we back out of the commitment? Otherwise, should we upgrade both Borlase and Keane, we'd be guaranteeing to lose Welsh if he doesn't slip to the rookie draft.
No, we can't back out of the commitment. It's a contract.

I believe that nominating Welsh as a F/S (announced last Friday) means that we're committed to taking him in the ND, if no bids come in before our last "live" selection. I'm not 100% certain about this, but I believe it is the case.

It would be the height of stupidity for Adelaide to do that. Remember, there are 36 other blokes on our list, some of those who we are banking on being here for us to hopefully win flags, that would see our admin sell a teammate out after they agreed to do the right thing by the club. That shit is club-killing.

Isn't only the EBA rookie base wage excluded from the cap?

Surely if it was to happen, the player involved wouldn't have been guaranteed being re-taken in the rookie draft.

Doesn't he slip automatically to us as a rookie if noone bids on him? We've been here before.

I am not 100% certain on this...

I believe that, having nominated him as a F/S selection, we are committed to take him with our last "live" selection in the ND.
We nominated Ben Jarman and selected him in the rookie draft, however I think there must be different ways to do it as all the talk on Jarman was written about us nominating him as a "potential father-son selection", which I believe meant he was open in the national draft, but guaranteed to us if he slipped to the rookie draft.

I believe with Welsh this is a full obligation and we have to pick him if no one else bids on him in the national draft.

Had they nominated Jarman, the Crows would have been compelled to select Jarman in the event no other club picked him on the night. If overlooked on draft night, Jarman could still be picked up by Adelaide as a father-son rookie selection.

The list mathematics dictates that we need to upgrade 1 rookie. Keane is the most likely, given that he's a regular member of our best 22.

Yes, Keane could spend 2 more years on the rookie list, as could Borlase & Turray.

As for the salary cap considerations... Only part of a rookie's salary is excluded from the salary cap - an amount equivalent to the salary of a 1st year rookie draftee. In 2025, that will be $100K. It's the same amount excluded regardless of what the player's actual salary is. Thus, salary cap considerations are about the number of players on the rookie list, not the actual players on the rookie list.

No... these moves were entirely expected, and do not give us the ability to trade back into the draft.

Nope. We're contractually obligated to re-draft them, provided they're still available at our draft picks (i.e. nobody else has drafted them and they haven't signed as a DFA with another club).

Doesn't he slip automatically to us as a rookie if noone bids on him? We've been here before.
No... there are 2 F/S nomination dates, one for the ND and one for the RD. If we nominate him the first time (which we did), then we're obligated to select him with our last live pick in the ND. If we nominate him in the 2nd round (after the ND has concluded), we are allowed to pre-list him directly onto the rookie list.

I am not 100% certain about this, but I believe it to be accurate.
