That’s the way it’s looking it was also stated on trade radio we are only using one pick into this years draft does that mean Welsh rookied not sure

Easy job for Hamish only having 1 pick in the draft then. No one can hardly complain then if he goes wrong on one pick.

So we are only taking one pick into this years draft after trading 46 for melbournes future 3rd ??

It would appear the club is confident Welsh is either a very late pick this year or a rookie selection. The deal for Peatling is probably just our F2 and swap of F3s now.

Thats a lot of draft capital that Melbourne is giving up. Desperate for pick 9.
I wonder what Essendon wants with those late picks. Points?
They have an NGA Kako who may be bid on around their pick 9 so they are trading out to ensure its not eaten up in a bid AND they get a nice F1 out of it too...

Yeah, will be funny if Melbourne continue their slide, their coach gets sacked and they miss out on a top five pick next year.

That F1 might be big. I suspect Melbourne will drop next year. Great deal by Essendon.

Taking a solitary pick into what's looking like a strong draft depth wise is perplexing. Three good players in but handicapping ourselves with several contracted players whose ceiling is 'decent' level sanfl player is not ideal for a team that finished 15th.
I don’t think it’s as easy as just cancelling player’s contracts. We would need to pay them out. We are bringing in 3 really good players plus getting pick 4 and Welsh. This has been a really really good off season so far for us

Hang on, so we've traded a current pick for a lower future pick?

Why?

You can almost always trade a pick for a higher future pick, because it costs to bring a pick forward a year.

So we just throw away some value there?
Don’t think we’re getting much more value for pick 46. The pick will be going to GWS regardless but they’d value a F3 more than a third rounder in this draft.

So we have traded a current R3 pick for a future R3, which you speculate will be a lower pick in 2025 (fair call).

My understanding is that as we only have our round 4 pick left, if Welsh goes in round 3, it is the future R3 that will pay. So essentially we are going to pay for Welsh with the future r3 pick, so it doesn't matter if it's slight above or below what it currently is, as we lose it either way.

Interesting that he has dropped so far in the draft pecking order in 12 months

12 months ago a few on here called Justin Reid incompetent for not trading our future first as Welsh was going top 5. Not only has Welsh slid but pick 4 is valuable.

Unless it's for a player or a specific purpose, trading future picks is a mugs game.

12 months ago we were not planning on pick 4, that’s a bonus

It seems like the top 10 are a sole elite but like all drafts - there are risks from 2nd round picks onwards - the players we have acquired through trade and FA off sets this risk

After 7 years of poor drafting - there gets a point we need to start acquiring established players

We need to start winning now and becoming relevant again

It's poor list management.
We finished 15th, yet the club seems to think we have a top 4 squad with very little fat to cut. 3 very good players coming in, plus pick 4 and maybe another 1-2 players with high level potential would have been a great outcome. There was absolutely no need for us to put ourselves in a position where we couldn't add in that extra talent.

Are we back on this?

Since Nicks took over, our drafting has been very good, so going back to Pyke era drafting, while it has hurt us, is not a great horse to keep beating.

But yes we have enough youth, getting in trades and free agents is the right approach, as it taking pick 4 to the draft.

It’s poor drafting in the past 6-$ season

This is the time to add to the lost through trades and FA

Bottom line is - you don’t win flags through pure drafting otherwise GC and GWS would have had multiple premierships between them……

We were not planning on pick 4 - 12 months ago, and the FA and trade acquisitions are much needed

What I don’t agree with - Smith’s contract extension. Absolutely no need to have a games trigger for Smith as he has never been a flight risk

Think this is my biggest issue with this off-season. Apparently a super draft (or at least deep draft) and were only grabbing one player (plus Welsh).

Could have paid out a couple of players and had a few more cracks at this pool of players. Especially with so many picks on the table due to the bids etc.

Happy with the ins (think ANB an overpay) but just feel like it's a missed opportunity - especially with Tassie eating up the draft soon.

Can always trade the following years pick forward again. Then you just take the hit when your at the top of the ladder.
