With what picks?

We currently have picks 4, 64 & 82. Delisting an additional player gives us pick #102. Delisting a 2nd player gets us pick #120 - assuming we still have sufficient room in the 2024 salary cap to pay them out (unlikely).

Quite frankly, I'd rather have them on the list in 2025 than a player picked in the 4th or 5th round.
Future picks into this draft is an option. We're not doing it, bit doesn't mean we shouldn't have cut deeper and manufactured a decent 2nd pick.

Or hell even a rookie pick on a developing ruck - we know what we're getting from strauny, burgess, and smith and a few others. There not going to have a material impact on 2025 in my view - and considering how well we have gone with rookies before we might get a player for the future.

So pick 46 out and a future 3rd in. I'm assuming we are trading a future 2nd and Melbournes future 3rd for Peatling and maybe GWS this years 3rd or 4th which we will use as part of the Welsh bid? Does that sound about right?

And 2 of them are in the best 18 (Peatling might be end of next year) so we've replaced the 3-4 players we've carried all year in games provided Nicks doesn't pick them again, McHenry and Smith are definitely gone so only Murphy and Jones (on form this year due to Lisfranc injury but he might bounce back) and then there's Laird and ROB who are the most difficult......
Absolutely, we haven't fixed all of our issues, but if someone told me we would come out the other side with our best 22 improved, I'm taking that every day of the week.

Hopefully the Rookie draft gets us a ruck mind you, assuming we have space.

We currently don't.

Yep, it's a pretty simple equation at the moment. Assuming the trade for Peatling goes through (it will), and we don't delist anyone early (we won't) then our draft haul will be limited to only pick 4 and Welsh. Everything else will just be moving existing players from one list to the other.

I mean I agree, but we don't have more picks and even getting rid of 'dead wood' doesn't get us any more useful picks.
We don't...now.
This is about list management. Planning ahead etc... Nothing we can do now, but maybe we could have if we had planned earlier.

You reckon the midfielder that got more midfield time in a top 4 side than Coniglio, Kelly and Callaghan over the last 9 rounds (including 2 finals) might break his way into a Crows lineup that finished 15th with the midfield being our weakest link?

Which is why he is still in the best 22 even with a small sample size.

We probably weren't expecting to attract three players in the trade period.
True. I doubt in our wildest dreams we thought we would land all 3. It is a great result.
Still, list management is about not stuffing your list with guys that aren't up to it, to the point that you can't add additional players.
We could have not given Schoenberg the extra year, left him until after the trade period and then re-signed him if we needed to. No-one else was going to snap him up.

Schoenberg, or Berry? I don't think we gave Schoenberg a contract extension this year.

Could we grab a ruck mid-season next year if anything happens to o'brien early in the year? Assuming the season is otherwise going well.

No the last one. We gave Schoenberg a two year deal the year before - for no reason. Could have given him one year, he was hardly in demand.

If any player on the list gets a LTI there is that option?...

I thought i'd seen someone make that point, probably yourself. Cheers that's good to know, I think that would be be the only catastrophic structural hole that might open up next year since Strachan is obviously not up to scratch.

I wonder how close the club thinks we are to a flag. Presumably they have to be aiming for the next 2-3 years. On that basis i hope Nicks has that firmly in mind when it comes to selection choices next year.

Another positive from the post-season thus far is that it doesn't look like they've created a handout job for Sloane

Can't have your cake and eat it too, it's as simple as that, 3 good mature age players to add to our experience and a top end draft talent is excellent business.

#edit - And a F/S for what now is looking likely to be at little real cost to see what he's got.
I just feel like some are nitpicking because all our deals were known so early, usually we are just scratching for at least one interesting trade at this point! We will be the only club to bring in 4 players that will all be best 22 in 2025 and increase the floor for our depth, that's good business from whatever angle you take.

Seems like the GC are holding everything else up in this trade period.

Luko
Rioli
Noble
Pick 13

It's the one time of year that they are relevant.
Imagine if they just refuse to do any of these trades in the end, just to mess with all the other teams.

Would be kind of funny actually.

And throw in a new Milera .

Who is the other player that will be best 22 in 2025?

Welsh?

I'm not seeing that if that's who you refer to and pick 4 may not be ready immediately either?

Yeah... if someone suffers a season-ending injury or illness before then, we would have the option of putting them on the Inactive List and selecting a replacement in the MSD. That replacement could easily be a successor to Strachan, as our low-cost state-based AFL-ready ruckman.

The odds are (unfortunately) that we'll have at least one player in this position.
