Sam Draper is a train wreck of a ruckman. His stats back that up. ROB is far superior. But hey, let’s not let the facts get in the way of our recruiting staff.
The stats on Draper require some perspective

a) Draper spent the whole PS running slow laps ....with zero ball work

b) Draper's first game was in R2 after the injury interrupted PS ....playing only 59% TOG

c) After R7 ...Draper missed the next 8 weeks

d) Draper rucked in tandem with Goldy for most of the season

You can pretty much throw the stats out the window .....the season was a wright-off

Strachan has been named in the SANFL team of the year in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

I think that qualifies as "probably the best ruck running around in the SANFL for the last few years".

How is it even possible to thumbs down this post? Come on Mutineer , you made an idiotic call referencing an award that mostly has only 1 winner each year and which a ruck winning would be an absolute rarity. Surely you can be a big enough person to just wear the loss and move on. Thumbs downing is just childish

Easy, because Boyd is younger, and the better ruck and has been named the best SANFL ruck 2 of the last 3 years including a Magarey Medal.

He's been named twice in the last four years.

Strachan has been named every year for the last four years.

You can't stand Strachan, it's fine - but he's been the best ruck in the SANFL in recent years

We got a 209cm ruckman that played 2 games for Sydney?

Harry Boyd still unsigned.

Kayle Gerreyn, Floyd Burmeister stilll available plying their trade in the lower levels.

Dodson, Molier, Smith the only 3 ruckman taken at the Draft at picks 52, 53, 71.

Seems pretty easy to get a developing ruckman - seems like many made a mountain out of a mole hill.

is it or the stocks are so bad right now they are concentrating on making part time rucks with their 200cm forwards and backman instead of going to the draft to pick lumbering potatoes?

Teams have seen a lack of value in the ruck position.
The problem is that if everyone takes the same approach as Adelaide, failing to invest in the development of young ruckmen, then there won't be any cheap "ready to go rucks" when teams need to bring them in to replace their current aging stars.

If everyone takes Adelaide's lead, then we'll all be scouring the state leagues for the next generation of lead rucks, and they won't be even remotely close to the level required due to a lack of development earlier in their careers.

The system works now, while most teams are still drafting and developing young rucks. It will fall apart if everyone follows Adelaide's lead, as leeches on the system.

Yes, there's a lack of value in the ruck position, but a minimum level of investment is still required, and Adelaide has fallen well short of even that minimum for a long time now.

There just isn’t the payoff for all the effort.

You can go the cheap option and get someone that does the job … or you can just cherry pick a good option from a club on the way down.

Trying to develop a single person to be the lead ruck is not something that appears to have worked too often - and even when it has, for no massive benefit.

It’s not like other positions where you can start as a forward and end up a backman … midfielder to half back … wing to forward pocket. It’s ruck or nothing.

Are there many examples that show otherwise? Where a player drafted as a ruck has become an important player in another role? I can’t think of one.

I’m in the Grant Thomas camp on this (and the named leadership group crap).

This is not a new discussion:

Kayle Gerryen was drafted to the Bombers in the 2nd round.

Logan Smith?

Thats not an Adelaide problem and its one area I am glad we are ahead of the curve.

How have Adelaide fallen short?

We have gone from Clarke / Biglands to Ben Hudson to Maric to Jacobs to ROB?

ROB is still a #1 ruck and will only be 29 when the season starts. The biggest problem I had with Rob was his inflated salary due to the club needing to sign him after our exodus and his B&F season.
