Which midfielders are available as a FA this year?
Which have indicated they will leave their club?
When has a quality mid has ever indicated they want to come to St.Kilda.
How do we get this mid without trading for him?
Trade for Stengle, get band1 for Battle get 2 top 5 picks get two of the best mids.

Only way we get mids this year.

I like the sound of that.
Whats a possible trade for him though?

Butler is 29 next season.

Collard will be 20.

Henry isn’t a small forward like the above. He is a wing half forward.

Higgins 26 Stengle 27 next year would be in their primes.

Stengle also brings some cleanliness creativity and a bigger goal threat then both Higgins and Butler.

Collard is the ideal replacement for Butler in a couple of years. Higgins will be here for at least another 4 years so no need to replace him. Agree Henry isn't a small forward but if needed, he can play the role while another develops

Stengle is obviously a way better player than both of the smalls, but 800k/year with the risk that he regresses when he secures the bag is just not worth the marginal upgrade on the others. Would rather target someone like a Konstanty who we can get for cheap with a ton of upside, or just go to the draft - there are a few decent smalls this year

This is only if the rumour that he only cares about money is true - if its more about being unsettled by environment then absolutely go for him

6. trade for Stengle, lose Battle and get band1

Not a bad shout but tough to pull off

If we get band 1 for battle, geelong must for Stengle which would be pick 14 currently so you’d think they’d be happy as long as we beat that.

We have our natural first at 5 and I think Adelaide’s 2nd so 24 or something plus our future picks. Would be too hard to trade a compo pick you don’t have yet.

Just an idea, would you trade next years first for Stengle and their pick 14 this year? Go into next season with 5,6,14,24 + Stengle - Battle

We make the 8 it’s a good deal but stay bottom 4 we **** ourselves which I think is perhaps more likely.

Not sure I can see how we easily trade for Stengle

Would have to be better than what Geelong would get for a FA.

If for example, they accepted our future 1st rounder, and we got band 1 for Battle, it would not really enhance our position except for
1. Fast tracking development of a top 5 dp. 2. We get two top 5 picks and not a frdp for next year but we would be gambling our ladder position is higher next year than this year.( Geelong would need to consider where we finish on the ladder)
3. We can still trade in a frdp next year by purchasing one, or getting one by trade.

Lots of possibilities.

Yes many considerations.

Assuming next years draft pool isn't superior to this year.

Come on, we all know how it would turn out if the Cats had our pick.

The problem is that Geelong would get band one from expected wages so we'd just hand Battle's pick back to them.

Possible outcomes relating to rumour file in order of my preference:

1. Retain Battle, recruit Stengle and just use of natural 1st to take the best mid available.

2. Lose Battle, gain band 1 pick, Don’t recruit Stengle.

3. Retain Battle, miss on Stengle.

4. Lose Battle, gain Stengle and cancel out of compo.

5. Lose Battle, miss on Stengle, gain less than band 1.

I’m all scenarios we have options to find another pick by moving future picks.

Definitely prefer Battle long term over Stengle pound for pound.

Obviously I hope that 1 is the most likely scenario but who fookin knows. Feel as though we get stung with no 5 as per
#4 would surely be far to much to bare, that would be clusterfxxk extrordinaire, that would go down with stewart barrett, russell greene, lovett etc

From Geelong’s perspective, any improvement on their expected band 1 comp pick for Stengle (currently 14) would be acceptable.

Best possible scenario for us is we somehow come up with pick 12 without too much trouble to give to them in a trade, which I think would be pretty hard to do. I suggested next years 1st for Stengle and Geelong’s natural first at 13 currently but lots of risk there.

That would leave us with 5 & 6 this year, assuming Battle leaves for B1.

If we get pick 6 comp for battle. Trade that for Stengle with Geelong pick 13 back. Which is equiv of pick 34. Which is not enough. Looks like next year's frdp, would have to be involved which is a risky venture.

Basically that is still us either losing the pick for Battle (with a late pick back) or losing next year's frdp. As where that frdp is not known, Geelong would want a buffer.
If our priority is our future midfield it is still a loss.

Geelong could come out of the finals in straight sets (weakens our postion), or finish high (strengthens our position).

Battle and his manager are not going to sit twiddling their thumbs waiting for whether it is a good deal or not for St Kilda.
If Battle is going to stay the club would need to be acting now. With suitors chasing Battle waiting to see where the Cats finish will be too late.

If you want Stengle, then the only real plausible way is a FA, and that then means that we have to keep Battle. And that we just go with with the one earlyish draft pick to land a mid.

Battle, Stengle and our existing draft pick is not a bad result. Two early picks to get two mids is probably better though.

This.
We want to keep Battle, we don't want stupid deals where we want to shove Battle out if it suits us.
If Battle wants to go elsewhere we don't take a free agent, we then want the compo.
Stupid complicated deals don't work.
I'd like to keep our next years first too, next years draft might be better than this years.

From all accounts this draft doesn't have a great top end , but it bats fairly deep, and the good news is we have the Crows second round pick and they are having a really crappy season.
Hopefully we can get some top end talent with our first pick. ( though we are warned its not likely to be anyone great ). Then maybe get another promising mid with the Crows pick.

Meanwhile:
Phillipou isn't much of a mid but he might be.
Owens isn't a mid but he might be.
Windhager is a tagger, he may not spend his whole career that way.
Garcia might get more than 11 disposals and 68% TOG.
Wilson might do more than he's already doing.
Hall might be pretty good.
When we draft a player we are looking for someone three years later.

Apart from Henry, who is fairly outside, we've pick up some Blues rejects.
Stocker is not a mid and is not the savior , and neither is Dow. I hope this is not what we have to expect from SOS.
Hotton is probably going to be a write off, he's struggling at VFL.

What i think we are lacking is the inside Bull. Steele/Crouch .....nope not Dow.

Sam Lalor might be the one for us to look at from that regard or later in the draft , but probably not as late as our 2nd , Cody Anderson.

Still think Will Brodie as a cheap trade would give us a better Brad Crouch replacement than Dow.

Contract Status: Out of contract at the end of 2026

You would need Freo wanting to unload him to save 2 years of contract payments.

But yes a possibility if Crouch's knee is as bad as some as saying it is. But he needs to be cheap trade wise.

ie I want Dalyrmple to have use of our 2nd Round (Crows) pick in the draft.

Yeah he's under contract, but he's wasting away in their reserves so they might trade him out.
Yes i want us to use that pick too.
Maybe we can trade Freo that gun forward we have...Allison.
Realistically , probably a future 2nd , sigh....

How bout we use our picks at the draft?
Offer Battle enough to get band 1 then leave the decision to him.
Play Ari the rest of the season. Find a cheap KPD to fill a hole. Draft 3 mids and stay the course. Leave the overpriced small forward business till we can contend.
Couldn't agree any more. Stengle ain't the answer to a shite midfield.

I’ve been banging on about the midfield for 10 years but just because you have a crap midfield doesn’t mean you don’t try and get any good players at all.

Small forward pockets are the cream not the cake.
Could we please bake the cake first.
We don’t need Stengle
Stengle was great in the premiership year playing in all-time great offensive side. Was okay last year, and good again this year once Geelong bounced back. He's a good player and looks great surrounded by other great players, but he won't change our fortunes. Small forwards are periphery players, just can't imagine he's worth what it would take to get him.

Reminder that we got Butler and Higgins basically for peanuts and they've played pretty good footy for us.
