That would be ideal I think. Best available mid with 7. Let Dalrymple stake his claim thereafter.
Seems the belief is there is 6-7 standout players and then a group of 10 approx in the level below. If you split 8 into a couple of teens picks you get two bites of the cherry which makes sense. If we had 3 top 20 picks and got 2 mids plus a tall (one of Whitlock twins or Shanahan) that’s a bloody good haul to add to Wilson NAS Garcia Phillipou Owens Windhager etc.

Why?

Next year onward everyone can trade multiple future years picks right?

If we get a good deal for our 2025 first we should take it

The other consideration next year is of the 94 players involved in futures games this year as 17yo's - 46 are tied to clubs. Almost half the kids next year will have restricted availability. Given the rule changes a few will slip out of clubs grasps but that number is ridiculous. Then two years later Tasmania enter and that will make the draft a total white wash for a few seasons after.

The AFL have basically re created the old Zones recruiting again and currently they dont have a path to circumvent it.

According to the Herald pick 8 is next to no chance to be used by us on Draft night. Every chance it’s traded for GWS 2 x mid teen picks.
Obviously we won’t know the results of this for years but I’m not a big fan of it. Top 10 picks are like gold and we get two cracks at getting a gun midfielder instead of one. This is very Pelchen-ey.

Take Reid if rest are gone and then see who bites for 8 or take Tauru.

With Hall and Carroll, we do not have a lot of list spots left if we take Cole Hoffman Peckett and Sandy player.

7,8,32 fills the list, unless we delist or out Crouch on long term injury.

Availability of list spots is a small potatoes concern.

If (based on who is on the board at 8 and who we think will be there with teens pics)... we think splitting 8 gets us closer to a flag- then we do it.

Number of available list spots plays zero part in that decision.

List spots is a consideration for small potatoes stuff like whether to take a peckett or not.

Unlikely there’ll be a gun mid at pick 8
Everyone’s saying this is one of the great drafts. We already played ourselves out of the real high end by winning meaningless games I don’t think we should be dropping any further with either pick.

And even though the points are being modified somewhat, the points are the same whether it is a good draft or potentially a weaker one. They’ll be constantly topping up through next year and the Tassie drafts, while other clubs will have very slim pickings.

Free agents will become critical for everyone.
