Re: 3 Changes to the Mids next week

Easy selection next week.

Out: Swan (Arizona), Thomas (suspended), Beams (inj)
In: Blair, Fasolo, Buckley

Play Blair and Fasolo forward for most of the game, and just use Sidebottom, Didak and even Krakouer through the middle.

It's only Melbourne after all.;)

If we need three Ins, they look pretty likely I agree.

Blair looked good in the VFL yesterday, worked hard, got caught a couple of times, but was clearly trying his guts out and wanted his spot back.

Fasolo was good too I thought, though haven't read 10th Letter's report yet; the real truth will be there!

Melbourne will be a real danger game, gee they were pumped after beating Dons and they always, always challenge us.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

Where is Benny Johnson at? Could he come back next week?

Re: 3 Changes to the Mids next week

Would love to see Seedsman replace Daisy on the wing. He basically plays the same role in the VFL and has been really impressive.

Doubt Seedsman Will get the Call but I would not mind it at all if he came in.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

Could be a Tricky game vs the Dees as we Struggled against Lately.

Though the player we struggle against in Aaron Davey is not playing

Read somewhere (can't remember where) that they'll be really cautious with him, won't see him for a few weeks yet.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

Bit concerned about this game.

Missing Jolly, Swan, Thomas, Johnson, Macaffer, and probably Beams [as well as Nate Brown]. We'll suddenly have a few more kids running around, our intensity over four quarters will be down and our strength around the contests will be reduced. They're missing quite a few players too, but they're not the same quality as ours.

On paper, we still should comfortably account for them. But this game is an annual struggle, their pace and tenacity really troubled us both times last year, and really, it was only a red-hot Dane Swan that prevented a QB loss. Need to bring our A game to have a decent win, and anything less than 90% could see us lose.

I think Blair, Fasolo and Buckley are the obvious inclusions.

Matchups: Need to limit the influence of Scully. Wellingham to go head-to-head. Maloney is in good nick too, but we're not a side to enforce tags.

Tarrant is a good matchup for Green, who has really troubled us in the past. Harry to go with Jurrah, Reid will destroy Watts inside 50, needs to work hard up the ground though.

I think we can expose them down back. I would imagine Frawley will go to Dawes, should be a good matchup. But they don't have anyone who can run with Cloke, and Leigh Brown will really stretch them as a third tall.

The press will need to be working well, because their run will give us fits if we drop the intensity in patches. Gotta make them pay on the turnovers.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

What happened to Beams?

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

We've got the close one Ed.. melbourne will run straight down the center with their quick mids.. its going to make for an exciting intense and interesting game!

Beams was iced in the last quater..

On Johnson, he played the first quarter of the vfl last week before getting a slight twinge in that hammy again.. he took no further part in the game.. its a bit of a concern at his age although he looked a class above everyone on that field and was on track for a 40+ pos game.

I can't remember the thomas incident, will he really go? If he does it could cost him a juddlow.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

Ins: Buckley, Blair and Dick
Outs: Swan, Goldsack and Thomas (if susp)

Blair gets the immediate reprieve for Swanny and I just feel that Buckley is better suited to play on the Demons smalls, so if fit he's in. Dick comes in only if Thomas is suspended, even though Dick's been fairly average in the two's he's managed to kick 9 goals in his past 2 matches against the Dees and we all know MM plays horses for courses.

Now I didn't see the Beams incident but I can assume it wasn't to serious because he played out the entire game out so I doubt the likelihood of Beams missing as most players will ice up like that after a game.

In general though I think this could be a massive danger game this week if Thomas is out suspended as well as Swan rested, because the Dees have the big bodies down back to stop Cloke and Dawes plus the tough nuts in the middle in Sylvia, Moloney, Mckenzie and Trengove to push us in contested ball. Ultimately we're we'll have them is that our defence is more capable of holding their forwards as a group and our small forwards may be able to exploit their small backs.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

A bit of a melbourne perspective

The press is something we've struggled with this season, the west coast game is the most notable example. However, we dominated transitional play against Essendon and their backline were caught out on many occasions. We must take our chances

The midfield battle will be particularly interesting, with a couple of your big names out, it could be a more even contest. However, one would think that the experience and discipline of the collingwood midfield would shade the enthusiasm of our recently returned players. Scully and Trengove loom as potential key players for you to mind, but the threat of pendlebury and co. means we will have to be the more defensively minded team. Putting all of our eggs in the scullgove basket is probably something, as a melbourne supporter, i am becoming more increasingly comfortable with, and look forward to the opportunity to see them apply themselves against a will drilled unit

Up forward for us could be anything, and by that it could mean Green and Jurrah kick 10 between them or none. Jurrah was flattered by 3 goals last week as his workrate simply wasnt there, Green enjoyed a nice return to form, but his famous consistency has vacated him this season. Howe looks a likely type but it will be only his 2nd game, Watts is improving but it not ready to be a focal target up forward. Our forwards will have their work cut out for them and will have a large say on how we fare.

Down back is key for us to have any chance of winning. Rivers is in fantastic form and Frawley is slowly reaching the performances of 2010. I think the talls battle will be fairly even, especially if Cloke is unable make the most of his chances. The smalls is our major danger, if we can't contain the small forwards then our back six will envitiable crumble and a capitulation is likely. However, if our back 6 are as soild as friday night, then we might be in with a chance

They're missing quite a few players too, but they're not the same quality as ours.

Perhaps true, but just for info, we have Bail, Bartram, Davey, Grimes, Garland, Jamar and Tapscott out from our regular 22. Half of those would be expected to be in our top 10 B&F, so they're big outs - for us at least.

Yeah definitely. I agree with that.

I guess what I meant was that we're missing a few of the players that set us apart from other sides in the competition. But both sides are certainly missing quality.

Yeah great point, I can't see Melbourne beating us simply due to the fact that Jamar and Davey are out. Melbourne won't be able to capatalise on Jolly's absence through Jamar, and Davey was a key reason Melbourne were able to break through our press last year through his precision kicking.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

The games we had against you last year were quite frankly bizarre.

It has been pretty obvious that we are trying to emulate Geelong a bit in the way we run and use the corridor (Though we kick a bit more than they used to) and although you lost the first game to Geelong last year you crushed them the next two times, but against us we did the exact same thing and it seemed to work. I think I can put that down to the fact Collingwood didn't start peaking till towards the end of the season though and perhaps your players didn't take us quite as seriously as they would have Geelong or St.Kilda.

In regards to matchups whilst Rivers was excellent last week playing on one of Cloke/Dawes is a lot harder than playing on Paddy Ryder (Whom I don't rate at all) and it'll be a big test. I've got faith Frawley can beat whoever he goes to, but he can't play on both of them.

Stefan Martin has actually been excellent in the ruck since Jamar went down, whilst he doesn't have anywhere near the influence Jamar does in actual ruck duels he is improving there and offers more mobility around the ground. Martin v Wood should certainly be an interesting battle, I think Wood will have the edge in the air but Martin around the ground.

Be interesting to see who takes Jurrah/Green/Watts (Although Watts won't play forward for the whole game). I'm guessing that you'll send Tarrant to Green if he plays deep, if not him then Jurrah (Just quickly noting this is actually the first time Jurrah will play against Collingwood)?

We desperately need Bartram back in to try and take care of one of Krakouer(sp?)/Didak, I'm guessing he'll get Krakouer and perhaps Joel MacDonald will get Didak, which I have to say worries me.

In the QB last year we stayed in the game because our defence was magnificent and although you had about 15 more inside 50s you didn't have a single winner up forward. I don't think we can rely on a similar performance this time as giving away that many inside 50s is asking to be belted.

Our motivation has been very up and down this year it seems, I actually think we'll come out pretty fired up this week (We usually do against you to be fair) but Collingwood will want to make a stand and show that last year was just a fluke and that they have no problem with Melbourne.

I'm going to tip us just because I want us to win so badly, but Collingwood by 45.

I agree in a sense but Stefan Martin has been in scintillating form and really is coming into his own as the number 1 ruckman.

While Aaron Davey is a good name if he was playing anything like he has been this season he won't be much of a loss.

Really keen to see how the likes of Scully, Trengove, McKenzie and Gysberts go against the Collingwood midfield and guys like Watts, Howe and Gawn go in general.

Should be entertaining if we decide to show up fired up to play.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

Blair in for Swan. Buckley and Fasolo/Dick if Thomas or Beams is susp/inj.

Even with both of our teams depleted with stars, I think we should win quite comfortably by around 50+ points. We have too many stars still in the side to make it anything other then a slaughter and we should redeem ourselves from last year.

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

a'la West Coast, Malthouse will have no trouble motivating the lads about this being being a "Danger Game" (Barrasi's Mob have their tails up after a big win, this is their biggest game of the year, many of our key players are missing and others have to step up, need to go into the break with a win, ... blah cliche blah).

Fasolo will put his hand and ask "Who is Barrasi?" and that'll end any chance of his selection.

Regardless, it'll be a cracker of a game.

This is the thing, unlike the Saints, I expect Melbourne to come at us with a more traditional game plan, some flooding involved yes, but it won't be a tag at all costs game plan like Stkilda had for the whole first half.

I expect this game to be fairly high scoring, when we have had those type of games this year, our backline has actually exceeded some unusually high scores, but our forward line has then saved that a little bit by kicking extraordinary large scores also.

What I'm saying is, weather permitting, I can see this being a shootout, something like 120-80 at the end of the game, which should make it exciting for all watching.

What I also hope for is a better turnout from Melbourne fans then the pitiful show from Saints fans this week, I swear there wouldn't have been many more then 10K of them there Saturday night, and that's why the crowd was reasonably poor (62k).

I'd love to see the Melbourne fans turn out in force, because it's guaranteed the Pie fans will be there, so we could crack 70k if it's a nice day.

I like this match each year, Melbourne put on a show pre game:D with the trumpet player etc, which actually adds to the whole atmosphere.

Can't wait for Monday week.:)

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

I'm Pumped for this one. Not expecting to win but really excited about our midfield. Moloney, Scully, Trengove, Sylvia against Pendles n co. Juicy!

Crowd could crack 75K imo!

Re: AFL Round 12 - Collingwood v Melbourne - Prematch Selection and General Discussion

This could possibly be our weakest side for a while on QB V Melb -

Ins : Blair, Buckley
Out : Swan, Thomas (?)

Buckley to play down back, Leon to have more of a run through the midfield, if Thomas is suspended. If Thomas is cleared by the MRP, then the only change will be Blair coming in for Swan.
