Good write up. Nice to see different views than ‘these ice heads are lying’ or ‘Clarkson deserves to be hanged’.

My only question is around the ‘mostly believe those making the claims’. What part of the claims don’t you believe?
Egan, Jess and Kennett have a lot to answer to in regards to this whole debacle.

Damo says it was the Sam Mitchell story which was blown out in the media this week was the real reason he pulled the pin.

I suspected that would’ve played a part. A complete nothing story.

cowro was the main one reporting that mitchell story and blowing it out of proportion right?

The worst part is the people advising claimants have handed right wing dickheads an absolute freebie.

I'm conflicted, cos I think Al deserves a fair chance, but all the racists and cookers are eating this up.

That's probably a better guess. Anything else he stands by. The Sam Mitchell thing was clearly regrettable.

Clarko's Mitchell jab raises eyebrows as Hawks feud grows

As for Caro,

The real point is, regardless of journalists blowing this story up, if Clarko had his time over, he would not talk about Sam Mitchell's finals record with the draftees. It was not a great choice, the timing was less than ideal, and he seemingly regrets it.

On that Barret recording, they mentioned he's told that story publicly 100 times, and even Mitchell has told it publicly himself. The only reason it was in the paper was to stoke controversy between Hawthorn and Clarkson.

Is that even the point?

On that awful AFL Daily podcast, Nat Edwards was this morning saying she has heard Mitchell give basically the same speech about his own finals record.

It sounds more likely to me that no one in the media has a clue about what exactly triggered Clarkson's decision to have a break beyond his own mental health and the investigation, but everyone has to fill their content quota, so we get this mish-mash of half-sourced chinese whispers.

Could have been as simple as his family members calling an intervention and saying "dad/Alastair, you need a break, we're worried about you, you haven't been yourself lately, please go down to the Mornington farm, spend a few weeks going for walks and reading some trashy airport novels, get some sleep".

I also think Russell Jackson is a reputable guy, who I have had the pleasure of dealing with him numerous times on a personal level. The personal attacks are off, and they need to stop.
Russell may be a top bloke; I don't know as I've never met him.

The problem I have with his role in this is twofold - instead of just reporting the story, he tried to make himself part of the story. Also, he did himself absolutely no favours by launching a personal attack on Sonja which he only grudgingly walked back after receiving a letter from her lawyer.

Whether he likes it or not, he is quite rightly open to scrutiny and criticism for his own actions. As for the (alleged) death threats, obviously that sh*t is not on.

*Slides entire contents of dining table across the floor and onto the walls…

“THERE ARE ABOUT TWENTY BLOKES WHO ARE OUT OF CONTRACT THIS YEAR! At any point 17 of them could be signed up to long term deals which only maybe three deserve!’

*Proceeds to throw chair across the room

“****ING SHNOZ!’

Hodge was talking about what he described as this " nothing " story on Tues morning.

I can see both sides on this. His thing is to listen to people who have been shafted by big organisations like the AFL and feel powerless and make their stories impossible to ignore. I’m sure he is also used to getting a lot of pushback. And while Clarko is one of ours it’s also true that the AFL industry and its clubs are powerful and used to burying stories they don’t want to be heard.

I guess my problem here is that he went nuclear with anonymous sources and named bad guys when there was already a process for those stories to be heard and responded to. Even with the AFL and not trusting its “integrity unit” it would have been worth seeing how the process went along before blowing it up. Now no-one including the players and families he spoke to is better off.

Fair points as usual. As a biased outsider looking in, your second paragraph still highlights some bad faith on his part, even if there was some potential elements of good intent towards some.

I actually don’t doubt his good intentions. Makes me wonder if the handing over of the review from Hawthorn to the AFL spooked some review participants into thinking they had lost their opportunity for a fair hearing and they needed to get attention before it disappeared.

Definitely think there’s an element of that, in addition to the unique cultural and personal circumstances of everyone involved.
