Good to get the win. Port we’re seriously undermanned so we are still well off the pace to be contending for premiership.

Miers has been outstanding all year. He will win our B&F.

Close (8 possessions) and Stengle (11) just isn’t enough. We don’t have a high possession midfield so these guys need to work harder and compete better 1:1. Our small forwards were the best in the league last year and have been well down all season.

Kolo didn’t seem to have a good match-up. He played poorly but will have more suited opponents next game.

True. Holmes plays his best games on the wing. He is not a midfielder.
I disagree with this. I think he's got all the attributes to be an excellent burst player through the middle and has done ok - not brilliantly - there.

Besides, the term "wingman" is a little... old-fashioned. Players generally don't stick to a wing any more.

Danger's comments are a little worrying, albeit expected.

It makes sense. He's finally climbed the mountain and completed his CV, it's understandable that he'd struggle to get up mentally for games nowadays. He's human.

The worry is that you only have to have a handful of players with that belief, and you've got season 2023 in a nutshell.

Hopefully he can find it in himself mentally to be up and about for 4 weeks. Could be the difference.
The captain should not be coming out and saying he’s struggling to get up for games mentally.

Could that depend on Hawkins availability?

Considering Jack was attempting to play forward tonight, why not actually take this opportunity play Neale instead

If Bews can put together a solid week on the training track he maybe comes in for a Tuohy or O’Connor, though I’d like to see us try to add to our midfield options - Parfitt was solid when he came on tonight, probably his best impact from the sub role this year and happy to see him get a chance from the opening bounce next weekend

Certainly says to him that in their eyes he is not ready.

Strongly disagree. He's just coaching his team, his first allegiance isn't us, it isn't the AFL, it's Port Adelaide and Port Adelaide alone.

Funny enough I don't recall anyone saying "once a flog always a flog" when he was streaming off half-back in the hoops :p
Let's just say I know his cousin and leave it there.

There's a pulse, but that's about all that can be said.

We were as convincing as an ex wife's kiss, and are coming into the finals as hot as a 3 legged dog in two casts.

But we won, so there's that.

Well, their season is over. All they have left now is hating on us.
I sat next to a Richmond supporter last night actually. Claimed his grandfather played for Richmond. When I asked who that was he said Mick Malthouse and his mother was Christi Malthouse.
Continued to bag Geelong for the entire game.
They are certainly a different breed.

Haha, he's talking out his arse unless he's a teenager.

Article below claims that Malthouse's first grandchild would be fourteen now.

Finally saw the replay.

Tom
Atkins.

From the first boucne he was the unstoppable force. Wont have a long career playing every game like that but it will be a celebrated one.

He set the tone.

He had helpers along the way.. and some boat anchors to drag.... but he did it.

Underrated.

Seriously underrated.

I don't think he's under-rated so much as just that others do acknowledge his limitations. He's hard as a cats head, a great tackler, and very disciplined - but he's also not a great ball user, and doesn't win a lot of football outside of clearances.

That's fine, but it's what separates him from the best clearance players in the game like, say, Clayton Oliver or even Tom Mitchell.

Holmes is a real concern, he looks to have gone backwards same with SDK, both are offering nothing at the moment. Sav should play for the rest of the year and i never thought i would say that, he was probably our best in the first half.
Holmes has had a quiet 3 weeks but before that he had his best game of his career and was best on ground.

What an absolute slog that was. Glad to get the 4 points (just) but if things don't change in the next few weeks, we've got an early exit.

Miers was unreal.

Bruhn was really solid throughout. Some strange, strange, strange selection decisions and matchup decisions. Kolo thrown under the bus by the Rioli matchup. Jack Henry similarly by being thrown up forward.

If you put anyone else on Rioli, Port don't get 3~ goals and the game's probably over before half time.

Sav marked well, made a few odd decisions but gets a pass mark.

Stewart was hideous in the first half by his standards, but came around mid-way through the third and had a big last quarter.

Parfitt was great when he came on and should come into the midfield to give someone a break - not sure who.

Stanley largely useless - turned it over, almost no follow-up but wasn't alone in that regard.

Atkins battled hard.

Bowes did the 'extras' well - flew the flag, got involved physically etc

Umpiring was horrendous both ways. That Dangerfield HTB was mind-boggling.

Dunno how we're going to beat Collingwood, but here's hoping. Daicos, Murphy and Mitchell out will help, but it may not be enough.
Stanley useless? What game were you watching?

clearly won the ruck contest again and had 18 disposals and some key marks. Was in our top 3 players behind miers and Stewart.

would of possibly been best on ground if it wasnt for those two howling passes.

ah thats it. The 2 passess is why you thought he was useless. Missed the rest of his game.

A good win against a depleted opposition. Stewart back in form, miers good, Dangerfield very good when he needed to be. Atkins worked hard all game. Thought we fought hard and am happy they got the points.
Now for the off the boil and a bit depleted pies!

Tom Atkins had huge wraps for Stanley after the game

The real Captain out there is Tom Stewart.

Cool - does that mean when we lose we can blame "the real captain, Tommy Stewart" for failing to lead from the front, such as last week...

Sorry, but that's pretty disrespectful to Dangerfield, especially after he was backed in as captain by the playing group and coaches

I know not all fans agree with Dangerfield as captain, but he is actually our real captain - sure he's had down games this season, but so has ever player on the list. I'm happy to see Paddy as the one with the C beside his name

Clearly won the ruck contest? Is that why Port had more clearances?

He can get the tap - but his follow-up work is almost non-existent. It's two weeks in a row the opposition midfields have had the ascendency despite Stanley's alleged ruck dominance.

To his credit he laid more than 1 tackle this week. Bravo.
