Not sure why the selectors would drop a wingman for a forward pocket player. I doubt Ah Chee can cover the kms Masten does. We just beat the premiership favorites by 8 goals, seems our structures and setups are working fine. If it aint broke etc.

I'm still very much of the opinion that Masten offers very little; sure, he can run, but what else can he do? He doesn't hurt the opposition on the scoreboard, he doesnt break and rarely sticks a tackle, and he is weak at the contest.

May the good times continue to roll, but we will definitely review this sentiment after a loss

Well he had the same amount of tackles as Hutchings and Ah chee yesterday. Scored more than both too.

No way Yeo was injured seriously, unless he has done a Fyfe( remember his monster game in prelim against Hawks playing with injury?? cost him almost 2 seasons). I hope Yeo is fine. He is hard to replace. We will know in few days time if it is serious or not. I really hope not.

True.

However, given Masten has zero inside contested game, and given that he very rarely hits the scoreboard, that means you are limited to playing him on the wing, and the wing alone. There is really no other place you can put him

Hutchings can play as a midfielder or a tagger, and despite his limitations, he has a crack and isnt afraid to get his hands dirty. When pushed to half forward, though he is hardly a match winner, he is servicable

Ah Chee is the most flexible of the bunch as he can play on the ball, on a wing, or across the half forward and half back flank.

Again, i am not stating Masten should be straight out this week, but i am saying that with Shuey and Ryan to come back in at some point in the near future, he would certainly be one of the guys who are going to be on the cusp at selection

Out Jetta, Hutch
In Nelson, Shuey (if fit)

Would be happy with no changes...

Surely a troll?

Jetts >>>Nelson. Was rusty in the first half but gave us some real drive in the 2nd.
Sheed was very rusty too but didnt seem to improve much yesterday. Overall, a better player than Hutch but Hutch was good yesterday and I think he stays. Id be surprised if Yeo isnt given a rest to play the long game with his knee.

Twisted logic.
We don't need Masten.
He's playing ok but he not irreplaceable.

Don't go kidding yourself

Don't get me wrong, I'd like someone a little more damaging then Masten as well, but we'd need another Gaff - someone with a massive tank who can cover a lot of ground. At the moment we just have to make do with what we have.

It's a bit like Cripps. He's in the team for tackling and forward pressure, the type of unrewarded stuff you don't see on TV.

The requirements for Masten's role can only be met by players with Olympic-level endurance, like Scully or Blicavs. I don't mean he's undroppable, just that we have no one to replace him in his role.

Waterman had 5 goal assists, don't think he's lacking game awareness at all personally.

Like to also add Waterman needs to increase his fitness level to sustain it much longer during the match and that's by giving him game time @ AFL level. Wait till the end of the season or beginning of next year to see his development if all goes well without any injuries. He'll be like Tom Lynch roaming/strong marking around the ground which allow J Darling in the forward 50 to utilise his marking prowess(he's was phenomenal against Richmond AFL#1defensive team). When Jake is conditions to AFL level he'll be a very influential and strong forward - good hands and great long kick.

You obviously don't read reports and statements by the club as to the massive focus on roles within the game plan.
They openly say that Masten is picked for a specific role.
He is an elite runner and his job is to use this ability for the team.
He is told to evade the stoppages and run, run,run into space providing a target on the outside.
He makes himself available to a number of players who are breaking away from congestion.
His possession tally is directly related as to how many times his team mates use him or what opportunities arise.
In other words his possessions are totally reliant on others.
Masten is perfect for this role, he isn't physically strong but there is no doubt he can run and deliver with accuracy.
He has good hands and covers over 15kls in most games.
The game plan is working and he is a vital part of that plan so I don't see the issue that some uninformed people have with him.Time to trust the coaches; they seem to be on the right track. No?
And as for the wing. The position has no relevance in todays football. It is merely an entry on a team sheet.

not a troll... I am a big Jetta fan but if I was to pick the weaker players from the last game would be Hutch and Jetta. Nelson is harder at the ball and seems more hungry?

Out: Hutchings
In:shuey

Don’t think we should tag anyone this week. I’d like to see sneeze given a bit of run in the side with a bit more time in the guts. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to have play a bit forward in the coming weeks and allow ah Chee a bit more time in the guts.

Hutchings was very good this week. Ah chee goes out after only 9 possessions (2 great marks) . Going forward I think he can hold his place as a mid/forward but I think he needs a few more runs at EP. Hutchings is in form and should definitely hold his spot

Masten's set shots are fine. Gaff, JK and Darling all missed set shots as well, from equally easy positions.

I agree and IMO you don’t play our game plan without some elite running and Masten provides that.

I have certainly not always been a fan of Masten but I think he is playing very well this year and his role is an important one.

I thought Ah Chee played quite well by my count he grabbed 3 strong overhead marks and put himself in dangerous positions but wasn't used. Was a little fumbly at times but needs more game time at AFL. Probably also lacks a bit of chemistry with the guys which will hopefully come with time.

No-one deserves to be dropped.
Interesting regarding the running:
Gaff: 14.9km
Masto: 14.4km
Rioli: 14.2km (he continues to really impress)
Hutch: 14.0km (based on this hutch can probably cover the distance Masto runs but maybe not at the same speed. Masto ran a solid avg 9.4km/h to be in the top 5)

Just the fact that he runs to space and offers options for players is good. This reduces the number of times the ball just gets bombed to a contest and also gives players under pressure someone to handball to. His kicking is good mostly but he does have a habit of trying to beat someone or delaying his disposal so gets caught more that most. Overall though, he's worth his place as are many players at the moment. Nelson is another in this category who is doing his job but under pressure to hold his spot.

Is that a good thing? Everyone rates Gaff more highly now that he can win his own ball. To say that Masten completely avoids doing this is not really a compliment, is it? If we weren't winning games, he'd be pilloried as a downhill skier because of this.

If you were to pick the weakest players you'd have Hutch in there? Must have been watching a different game.

Sheed, Barrass and AhChee were all below the 2 you mentioned in the pecking order. That said I would'nt drop any unless to make way fro Shuey.
Said it before and Ill say it again Jetta >>>Nelson.

So you are saying that the coaches are wrong to utilize the strengths of the player group in their control.
Masten has shown that he has the best tank in the group.
He is not physically strong bur uses the ball well so managed correctly can be an asset to the team.
You play him in the ruck, as a key forward or an in and under midfielder you wont get a result but you play to his strengths and you win.
Jetta is in a similar situation, great user of the ball but has problems finding it himself so the coaches use his strengths to advantage for the benefit of the team. He is a receiver running off half back.
Jetta is one of the fastest players and Masten has the biggest tank. These are attributes that we have not got a lot of.
It would be great to have Isaac Smith or Tom Scully, but we don't.
