This is the general tone on the Geelong board.

Port get easy draw at start of the year, now seem to be playing good teams off longer breaks, good team, but not as good as results say.
Good. I'm happy to be underestimated by all our major competitors.
Although I doubt that the Geelong coaching staff would write us off so easily.

An interesting argument given that Geelong and us have both played the same number of games against top 4 and top 8 sides (we have better record) and they have okayed more games against bottom 4 and bottom 8 sides than us.

Suspect the injury was so nasty, like with Dixon previously, that he won’t be right till next year.

It was. A horrible mess according to the surgeon. Having said that, if he can fix the missus' ankles which had wafer thin stringy tendons from years of ballet - then he can fix that train wreck.

The old perception bias.

If Bonner played on the weekend, and made half the errors and mistakes that Houston did, he'd be lynched, delisted and never to play again. However Houston has a positive perception, so his rubbish game went largely unnoticed.
I think you may have had too many green cookies watching game. Houston's piercing passes helping our runners break defensive lines are elite. Sure, every player in such a fierce contest will have their moment to turn it over. But f me, Bonner in same sentence!

But was your missus back playing AFL with confidence within 12 months?

Like Dixon, I think the best we hope for us Watts to come good next year and take us to back to back flags, this time undefeated for the season.

Looking ahead, after this game we only have Collingwood left to play who are a current top 8 side. I know it's easy to down play our position after years of disappointment but this season is getting real and we are up to our necks in it. If we win this game a 4th minor premiership should be coming our way, it's that serious.

If we beat Geelong and miss top spot, we'd be disappointed for sure.

Yes, realistically we probably only need to win 4 out of the next 6 to stitch it up. If West Coast or Brisbane went undefeated from here we would need to win 5 to put it beyond doubt. Which means we can definitely drop one game and still finish top, maybe two. if we win the hardest of them all on friday night, it will be hard to knock us out of pole position.

In Terms of cumulative rest time, we last played on the same day as Geelong in R5. In 6 rounds and 5 weeks we have had the same rest days. Geelong had a 10 day break before round 8 and have been playing catch up ever since.

I don’t think this means anything come Friday night.
Can you imagine Geelong fans complaining about limited rest against an opponent? If I had one dream fixture, it would be getting to play Geelong when they're coming off a bye.

I'm predicting these changes

IN: Mayes, Motlop
OUT: Lieno, Farrell

Mayes for Lienert is the most logical. I reckon Sutcliffe will be axed for Motlop. Farrell gets another chance.

Otherwise, on a 6 day break I can't see any other changes.

Chris Scott coaches a well drilled team of experienced campaigners. We all know the Cats game plan will revolve around putting emphasis on keeping possession & slowing down general play to counteract our strengths.

The ability to deny the Cats repeated 20-40 metre uncontested spot marks is the key to winning. Make the hand baggers kick to as many contested situations as possible & launch from there.

Fast ball movement is the Cats Kryptonite.

They loved their possession game on Monday night. The issue St Kilda had was they were giving up the 15-25 metre kick on the diagonal toward the centre corridor.

We can give up the switch provided it is strictly lateral and we cover the ground so they can't get on an overlap run. What we can't give up is a series of cheap easy 20 metre kicks up field which will result in geelong winning the territory battle.

I think we really match up well with the cats. They are a relatively slow team which should play into our hands. They also had 7 players of 30+ years who will be backing up on a 4 day break.

Fast ball movement with 35-45m diagonal kicks to our smaller running players. Geelong are very strong is the ground ball contest, so Rocky and Wines will need to have big games.

I have a feeling Butters will be rested (if not this week then he’ll be rested next week) based on Wines’ comments the other day. So, I could see Mayes and Motlop (or Ebert) in for Sutcliffe and Butters.

If Butters plays the I think he’ll be very important. If not, Duursma and Amon and going to have to step up as they both have done on several occasions so far this season.

I’d also really like to keep Lienert in, I think many are underrating his performances this season. I agree he’s not in our best 22 when everyone is firing, but he’s been pretty solid so far.

win the contest to get the ball on the outside and Geelong are cactus, let them get first hands on the ball and they will starve our forward line
