Anybody who thinks Sutcliffe was serviceable against Richmond has just had their standards lowered. He offered nothing, as usual. His direct opponent Nick Vlastuin led the Champion Data ranking points for Richmond. And his awful set shot was the turning point that eventually got Richmond back into the game in Q3.

Shouldn't play for us on Friday, or ever again.
Other players no doubt made him look better than he actually was. My concern was listening to Monty's presser, it revealed that the coaches were probably happy with his game.

I agree overall though, I'm always disappointed when I hear he's in the side. I don't know what he offers above almost any other player on the list.

As supporters we always want to have a look at the kids but I genuinely think Bergman or Mead would be better in the side not including the lads on the injury list. Haven't included Williams due to injury.

It’s been interesting to watch the different approach to the condensed fixture that the cats have taken over most other teams. They have actively rested 3/4 players in each of the last couple rounds and that may have been a big part in why they ran all over the saints.

I don’t think we can put too much emphasis on their 4 day break now that a fair chunk of their side has been rested at one point the last couple weeks. Whereas even though we’re coming off a longer break, we have taken a different approach and haven’t rested players aside from the natural rotation from injuries and form.

We can’t go into the game with the mentality that the cats will just drop off or be tired in the second half. Go hard from the start and play our way!

I’m on the Motlop bandwagon over Farell and Woodcock at this stage. While his stats don’t show it, he has been in the right positions so many times this season, with hard full ground running, and not received the ball.

He is not a possession junkie and never will be. Like Polec, Whitfield, or Hill who often run behind the ball to pick up extra stats.

Motlop’s knock is when he is out of form, he doesn’t tackle, fumbly, get his own ball and so on. He was dropped for this last year.

This year he was dangerous, and the opposition knows they must blanket him. He is another weapon, with his great disposal, clean hands, and run. He also draws the opposition out of space, which has helped us with linking up the ground this year.

Lastly, Wines has shown with a few games under his belt he can really grab the inside game by the throat. Motlop should be given every chance to build confidence, and touch before finals (just like we should get Rozee rest etc, so he is at the bestfor finals). Motlop has shown for Geelong he can be lethal in finals.

A firing Motlop will be essential against quick teams like Brisbane.

I think making Motlop wait for his spot back and keeping him keen is the best policy.

I don't think gifting him his spot back as soon as he is fit is the way to get the best out of him come finals.

When he is on he is still better and more consistent (for a short block of games) than Farrell at this stage.

It's funny how ever since the terrorise Neale debacle, Sutcliffe cops a whack on here no matter how good or bad he plays. Clearly he's not best 22 when everyone is fit but if you're watching objectively without having already made up your mind, he's been a solid role player whenever he's played for us.

Agree and surely that is the thinking from the coaches, we have a lot of young inexperienced players already in the team, a few older experienced heads to complement them and get the roles done at a consistent level, even if not brilliant, gets the job done.

I would have thought Farrell gets a life. Must have a few tickets in the bank

Is an interesting spot. Mckenzie was “gifted” his spot back despite lienert doing really well for a game, because he deserved it. If Farrell or Sutcliffe were dominating and Motlop was brought in despite that, that would be a gift, but given Farrell in particular hasn’t been great, I think if Motlop were to come in it would be more trying to improve the team.

Either way I certainly would want the medical staff to be completely confident he (and others) are 100% ready to go if they do come in.

The old perception bias.

If Bonner played on the weekend, and made half the errors and mistakes that Houston did, he'd be lynched, delisted and never to play again. However Houston has a positive perception, so his rubbish game went largely unnoticed.

Yeah gives his all, was ok with him coming in late last week against the reigning premiers given the time frame and position that needed filling.

Should absolutely not be playing the Cats though.

Will be a tough game but I'll back us based purely on a 6 vs 4 day break. Literally every side coming off a 4 day break this year has been knackered by the 4th quarter, and that has been regardless of how easy their previous match was.

Not going to be easy, but at the very least we have to give this game a huge shake.
It's sad that we still need some sort of an advantage to beat Geelong, when are we to become the feared team. I want to beat the best teams on a fair playing field, then we can say Port has arrived.

I believe in Bonner’s upside more than most but, is it perception in your example, or runs on the board?

Agree Sutcliffe does suffer from perception bias a bit, but I can see why people want to see youth with higher potential ceilings instead (even if I don’t agree with them given our ladder position and on-field profile)

He's had one good game, Essendon last year. Hasn't been up to par in any other game he played.

What role did he play solidly this week? He played in the forward line. 11 touches. No goals. Had one tumbler of a set shot that never looked remotely like going through for a goal, and while this isn't entirely Sutcliffe's fault, that miss happened to be the turning point that let Richmond back into the game. One 'goal assist' which was a blind handball over his head requiring a ruckman in his 10th game to kick a GOTY contender. His direct opponent Nick Vlastuin led Richmond for Champion Data points. What part of that is solidly playing a role?

He was outperformed on basically every level by Boyd Woodcock, a pick 76 skinny teenager playing his second game. That's where his career is at. Gives us nothing that we couldn't get from a Bergman or Williams.

We gain nothing by playing Sutcliffe. Older player who doesn't get much of the ball at all. Skills and decision making aren't flash. Isn't quick. We're better off developing a young player in his spot. Sometimes the cold hard reality is that a player isn't AFL standard, and that's the case for Cam. We waste a spot in the side by playing him, and we waste a spot on the list by employing him.

I would still back us to beat Geelong on an even break. All I was saying was that the extra 2 days will be an advantage no matter how you look at it.

Monty is the one that was happy with the role he played. Perhaps was just being positive in an interview. At same time the team really did dominate so perhaps he did play his role off the ball with field position and pressure etc? I don’t quite see it either but the coach should know best.

If Bonner had a game with 17 touches, 6 intercepts, a goal and a goal assist like Houston did, it would be the best game he's played in a long time.

As an emergency that can plug in all over the ground perhaps he does have a role at AFL level. But agree better to not name in the 22.

Yep agreed but Bonner is not a natural defender that Ken wants him to be, he's a wing half forward type that used to run and was able to kick long goals, ah but Ken.

I think you're seeing what you want to see. He's not star but when he gets the ball, he generally does the right thing. And you missed his contested ball win which resulted in the Amon goal in Q2.
