Sadly there has been far too little midfield time for SPS this year. Seems his usage in Round 1 was necessity based. Since then it’s been HBF or HFF and nothing in between.

“Samo? You’re on the flank mate.”
“Thanks coach, which one?”
“Yes.”
Honestly I never had any hope he was playing much midfield time. It was alluded to in a Simmo presser at the start of the year, I specifically recall him saying "half forward".

From that point on, I knew we wouldn't get to see him swerving through heavy traffic. At least not on the footy field.

Agreed but that’s a different issue to Witherden coming in and him going out.

I’m sounding like a Witho fanboi here.

At least SPS goes in hard and has a bit of pace.
I honestly don't know what Witho brings to the table.

Ive always gone by the theory that blokes that teams get rid of are gotten rid of for a reason… yes ive stuck up for Naish but it still applies. Teams don’t get rid of blokes they think can play

Witherden in yuck .

Also O'Neill in without natanui rucking.

He will probably be relegated to a flank anyway

Yeah absolutely but given SPS played back last week it’s hard to not to see him as the direct swap here.

That said, more look at Foley, one last look just in case for Witherden before his contract expires - it’s fine. Not in love with the idea but it’s fine.

The other thing to keep in mind is players like SPS and Witho might not be best 22 but are likely serviceable in the next rung as players we need for depth.
At least until the next lot of draftees take their spots.

Hope Redden has a good game on Sunday to justify his continued inclusion. At this stage of the season I’d take him being “managed” and rather get games into Trew or Clark for the inside mid role.

What is Reddo’s future? Does he stay on the list at years end? I’m ambivalent whether he stays or goes but he will be 33 at the end of 2023. Not exactly in rebuild mode if he gets another gig next year.

Except Carlton did for 3 years till Bolton took over

I think his knee injury this PS set him back a fair bit more than was let on personally. Still have hopes of a mid transition for him
If his knee isn't right (and I agree with you it does seem to have hampered his season) we should rest him for the remainder of the season or send him in for surgery (if that is required). Duggan too.

Not sure what the benefits are by continuing to push them and potentially delaying their preseasons.

He's durable and playing pretty good footy. Can't clear all the hardened bodies out at once. If he wants to go around again and is open to playing games in the Magoo's as we turn to the yoof then so be it.

Playing only our young mids together in the AFL with no NN would be worse than trying to develop them in the WAFL with ammos around them.

Redden provides leadership and a hardened body .

Yes he is older and lacks the little pace he once had . He is still averaging 22 touches 6 marks 5 tackles 4 clearances

If SPS was averaging those numbers we would be creaming ourselves

Redden adds more to the team than gaff and shuey atm . By all reports he is a great team man also

Is it maybe a case that SPS isnt that good in the midfield at AFL level? Seems strange that 2 teams haven't used him there.
I posted this after we played Brisbane in round 8;

"Of all the mids that attended centre bounces last night, he attended the least, despite having the highest rate of getting a centre clearance (4 attendances for 1 clearance). For reference, Kelly attended 21 of the total 24 centre bounces for a return of only 3 centre clearances. That's not to say he didn't have a role in handballing/blocking for the player getting the clearance though. Redden attended 18 for 2 clearances."

Based on those numbers I could make the argument that Kelly/Redden aren't that good in the middle. But they get the opportunities to make up for it, SPS hasn't had anywhere near the required opportunities to show what he can produce there. Yeah 4 attendances in one game for 1 clearance isn't much of a sample to use, but if he's not involved with the ball he absolutely throws himself at the opposition, I'd so much rather him getting the opportunities in the middle that have been given to Gaff instead.

Probably worth keeping to stagger the retirements /delistings of our older players, but f uck me...you'd bloody hope XON pushes redden out of the B22 on form next year.

I dont want to see credits in the bank selections next year.

Aside from maybe Hough I can't think of anyone who I (and probably this board) would have been frustrated at less than Redden in this frustrating year.

Doesn't dominate but could never accuse him of not cracking in, standing up, being a team player, even being past it. Hard to even go with the argument that he's keeping younger players out as Gaff and Shuey would probably be ahead of him in the line there and it seems Redden has sacrificed his role a bit to give Trew a go.

Big fan, still in a dream world he'd be forced out by Culley or Hough or someone in a year or two but have no criticisms for him at all currently.

It honestly doesn't matter how he plays it seems. Been rubbish all year and will be a non factor again this week. Still a starter the following week. Even worse, you will see him in the middle at most bounces.
Almost guarantee he will get another year at least too. Has to be a coaches favorite at this point.
We are failing because of senior players like Reddo but Simmo either doesnt see it, or is going to back them in until his demise.
