The club has a very old school approach to the development of some players as was pointed out with the Worrell/Doedee/Lever stuff

Back a few decades ago squads were stronger, list management was less advanced, talent pool better. Clubs didn't have to immediately play drafted players because there was less risk of leaving and the best 22 quality was better.

Since the introduction of Gold Coast and GWS most teams have looked to get their draftees in sooner because the bottom couple of players in any given team have dropped away to make room for more teams. So you may as well play a first round pick who is likely better than some reserves quality shlub

Also with a larger salary cap, free agency, longer term deals now being common, rivals are much more aggressive at poaching talented young players and paying for potential. This has again been exacerbated by a weaker talent pool and compromised draft.

We can't just expect Curtin to go through a multiple year apprenticeship in the SANFL and be happy with that.

If we learned anything from the Davis, Gunston, Lever, Cameron, McGovern situations (and you better believe we learned absolutely nothing, we never do) it's that not backing in juniors and not paying them what they are worth WILL make them more likely to leave.

Yes we have played some juniors immediately, but often this has been because we lacked existing players in those roles or we played them out of position again because we lacked players in those roles.

With Curtin we don't lack players in his role, so he's in the twos. Now I'd argue the players in his position (Brodie Smith) are playing very badly so he should be getting a run but the club doesn't see it that way.
The idea that players like Cameron (a rookie pick who played 73 out of a possible 90-ish games for the club including 7 in his first year) and Lever (12 games in his first year) left due to a lack of opportunities is so wildly divorced from reality. Almost as much as the idea that we draft talent and don't give them a chance to play until they've earned their stripes in the SANFL.

The reality is the club has played basically all of their high draft picks early in recent years, from round 1 in many cases and certainly in their first year if not. Plenty of valid selection criticisms you could make, but nobody is doing multi-year apprenticeships before being given a shot unless there are significant fitness or performance issues.

Remember Worrell had to wait until halfway through his fourth season on the list to start getting regular games. Even then it took an ACL to Doedee for him to start getting games.

Likewise Doedee having to wait until Lever left, and Keath having to wait until Doedee did his first ACL.

We'll probably expect Curtin to sit there in the SANFL until Worrell leaves. Never mind his peers will have 70+ games to their name by then.
This is unfortunately our approach. We would be the most inflexible in the league. Dowling could play any position on the ground better than Ned. Just put him in anywhere.

Even Curtin, just put him in. Manage his time on ground like every other team manages to do.

I know it’s early but signs aren’t good re Curtin. For a team that can hardly win a game, it’s damning this kid can’t even get one.

beyond his elite side step and neat kick, seem he lacks athleticism/speed/agility to my untrained eye. Dare I say it; plods around a little like Mcasey did. Also looks pretty disinterested and nonchalant.

I hope I’m so wrong that I get laughed out of here.

Hope is all we have right now.

Or maybe it’s because this shitful club is playing him AT BLOODY FULL BACK.

I seriously wonder how badly the shape keeper and Smith would have to play to get dropped. They seem to be immune to omission it’s absolutely ludicrous. They could probably play for the opposition and still keep their place, it’s round 7 wtf are we doing.

We are always 10 years behind.
It's what happens when you think you everything is going great and you already have all the best people in place.

Not bad for a first year player but hardly awe inspiring. He should be played somewhere where we can see what he's got, HBF at minimum but in the middle would be better.

Can you imagine Reids stats in the sanfl?
Its just ludicrous that he's at full back. Why draft an attacking player with weapons to then sit them deep defence.

We'd get Patrick Mahomes to work on his punt returns

They left because we didn't want to pay them what they were worth, which points to us undervaluing them.

And I did say that yes we have played high draft picks recently, but how often do we put players into their best roles immediately? We only fill gaps in the 22, not look to actually introduce them, which is why players like Worrell sit in the SANFL - no space for them.

Gallucci - debuted forward and SANFL for ages
Fogarty - in and out, tried multiple roles
Jones - debuted forward
McHenry - SANFL for years
McAsey - debuted, chopped and changed, dumped for years
Worrell - SANFL for years
Schoenberg - debuted forward
Thilthorpe - played in position!
Pedlar - SANFL for years
Cook - barely played
Berry - debuted forward
Rachele - sort of in position but low midfield time
Soligo - debuted sort of sometimes in position
Michalanney - debuted in position!
Curtin - SANFL so far

There has been little to no eye for developing these players where they might play their best football. It's all plugging holes or not getting a run.

And yeah maybe there wasn't a midfield spot for Jones right away, but was he ever a forward? Was Berry ever a small forward? Why haven't we ever tried a young player off half back? Why are all our young mids played forward?

And then, not so much lately but it definitely happened in our last flag charge, when we did back in players to play their best roles we then didn't pay them relative to their talent, output and potential

Any chance ROB gets a week to remember how to take a contested mark?

Not joking, last time we dropped him he responded with a dominant game in the Magoo's. I think he needs a serious kick up the keester to get his season started!
Probably more chance of that happening if Thilthorpe wasn't injured. They could have played Strachan as the lead ruck with Thilthorpe in there for big chunks. I am not sure if we would go Strachan as our main ruck without a good backup option, not totally out of the question but I think unlikely. ROB is capable of playing majority of the game in the ruck with only short rests, not sure if Strachan could do the same.
