You are all not paying attention to the real problem which is contested ball, Vardy and whoever being dropped doesn’t change the teams real issues. We get beaten at the contest easily and concede open play to our opponents way to easily. Make as many changes as you like but the reason we lose won’t go away until the coach addresses it.
Problem is Sheed and Gaff both want to play outside, Redden is inside but too slow. Eagles should go after Dunkley end of this year and try and get rid of Gaff somehow to lose his contract

Bingo and there in lies the problem.

And yet Simmo refuses to play Petch ocassionally through the middle ..I wonder about Simmo sometimes he`s so entrenched in his own little boy`s club that he doesn`t think outside the box ..

Playing Petch in the midfield would really be thinking outside the box. Surely you jest?
Now playing a Ryan through there has some reasoning

Not permanetly playing Petch in the middle but sure let him attend a few centre bounce downs ..He looked great roving with a dominant ruckman in a few games in 2019 ..Petch is lost just playing a fwd decoy role we need to develop ways to use his blistering speed ..

Agree with playing Ryan in the middle ocassionally ,he would be a great addition ..

Petch simply doesn’t have the football ability or nous in my opinion. You obviously see something I don’t and that’s cool. I wouldn’t play him midfield in A grade amateur footy.

No it’s not, contested ball is our issue all over the ground. If you win contested ball you don’t need speed to move the ball quickly. You just need skills.
I think it’s both. It’s contested ability, and being able to win contests in general play, not just at stoppages while everyone is flat footed and you have NN nearby.

Opposition players are hitting contests at speed, knowing they will break through our tackles and outrun us. GC flankers simply ran in a straight line right through us last week, while our mids ambled after them

What will happen and what might happen and what I'd like to see are all very different things.

I'd be happy with...
Out - Vardy. In - Williams (if fit), or Ah Chee or Brander (pref) to play body in the ruck and then be a mid. JD or OA can ruck forward if needed like Tom Hawkins does at Geelong. Ah Chee is not AFL standard, but he'd be replacing someone not WAFL standard, so that's a step up.
Out - Redden, In - Trew. Jack's not the guy he was in 2020, when he wasn't the guy he was in 2019, when he wasn't the guy he was in 2018. At his current rate of progression he'll become Chad Fletcher by the end of the year.
Out - Langdon. In - Winder. Langdon looks like he needs to get his head and his arse in the game somehow, and the WAFL might be the place.

How many practice/wafl games has Brander now played in the guts/inside mid and done reportedly well? 2 or 3? Either way I think it's enough provided he does/gets the same game time and position at AFL level. Him and Shuey back in.

Shuey rotating fwd and swapping with O'niell in the fwd line taking Langdon's spot. I don't want Shuey's hammys to ping again so he needs to come back slowly with some fwd time (although fwd time can be explosive movements which might spell trouble for the hammys).

Kelly rotating/swapping forward with Ryan. Won't hopefully lose too much attacking power or midfield power but make us more dynamic.

Williams definitely in for Vards if he is ready but sounds as though he still needs some conditioning. If Williams is not ready then Brander is pinch rucking and then is front and center for his inside mid role.

If Williams is coming in then Brander is coming in for Nelson. Think with Cole, Shepp, Rotham, Hurn in the backline we have the small/medium fwds covered as well as flexibility to cover tall if needed. If we need some more small to medium defender rotations then Duggan can rotate back and give a chop out here and there.

1. Shuey for Langdon (hasn't offered enough yet although he seems to have an good work rate so it may come in time)
2. Williams for Vardy
3. Brander for Vardy
Or
4. Brander for Nelson or possibly O'niell

Not sure what's going on with Gaff? Didn't seem to have a tag. Just seems to be really labouring which isn't like him. Wouldn't be surprised if he has some overuse injury from excessive running in his career. Hopefully not the OP hitting another player of ours and maybe not enough repetitive explosive movements for this to have occurred bit maybe a shin splints/stress fractures in legs or feet?

Think Sheeds apprenticeship as a mid is well and truly done and we need him to step up and stay as a permanent mid. He is/has been damaging on occasions when resting/rotating forward but I don't think he is as threatening as a Kelly or Shuey up there and those guys are quicker and more agile to put on fwd pressure. If he takes more mid time then it frees up Shuey and takes pressure off his hammys.

Having Ryan rotate into the middle just gives us more midfield x factor which we will miss until yeo and or touch wood Willie are back. If he only goes there with Kelly going forward to his spot I think both positions are still well covered but just chucks some curve balls at the oppo.

Bingo and there in lies the problem.

Bit difficult given we only have 2 contested beasts and they didn’t play. Sheed isnt exactly the best in that area.

Still, good bloody , I thought their midfield was going to result in them smashing us.

Port will be interesting game, coming off a 6 day break.

Today almost looked like we just conceded at the contest at times.

If dogs won the ground ball we just backed off and let them flick throw it around like a hot potato without any pressure.

We weren't in their face at all and everyone knows pressure is how you break down a handball style of play.

IN - Shuey (If fit), Williams
OUT - O'Neil, Vardy,

Liking Xavier but I think Redden at this point still just provides more.

Vardy out is obvious. He's been a potato, often an injured one, since the 2018 grand final. Can't keep carrying his low output.

When they feel Trew is ready I reckon he will be the one that is the catalyst for our midfield to go to another level. I tend to agree about Reddo. He’s got a huge heart but is too pedestrian on the spread.

You can’t utilise speed until you win contested ball. Our tackling is weak also as you said.

Its not just today - thats how we played last week too, and I suspect its a tactical decision. IE: Simmo is happy to concede the contest/ corridor if it means getting players back in defence to rebound the ball.

Its the old West Coast "attack from defence" strategy of the 90s, but we dont have the cattle through the middle to pull it off properly.

What nonsense. Sheed was number one for CP's today. His best footy (finals 2018-mid 2019) were as a result of him spending mostly inside.

I like the look of O'Neill but with Port also having a midfield full of bulls, do we look to bring Brander in?
