I never thought I'd see the day someone suggested Kennedy to the midfield (never mind the fact that he can't keep up with lumbering tall backmen anymore) but here we are

Expecting an on ball division of Cripps (ruck), Kennedy, Darling and Allen next game

Exactly.

Get him to run X amount so he's exhausted. Then take relatively straightforward set shots under fatigue.

At least try to create a situation even remotely resembling that of a real game 🤦‍♂️

Or we could just watch him curl a few beauties through from the boundary, or in seats, then do a dance and kick 0.4 the next game he plays?

Both are good options.

Got some skills

For me our midfield mix is wrong. We should only ever have one of Shuey, Kelly or Gaff in the centre at the same time. They need to be receiving the ball on the outside or in space from our bigger inside mids like Sheed, Redden and even Ah Chee. Unfortunately at the moment we have it the wrong way round, with Redden, Sheed and co on the outside, either on the wing or HFF.
This was one of my concerns when we lost Mitchell as our mids coach.

When people say they want Shuey and Kelly on the outside are they referring to centre square stoppages or general ones? You need your best guys in the middle at centre stoppages as the guys on the wings are basically redundant in that situation.

Centre bounces you want your best in there to use the space and taps from Nic.

In general play you want them moving through or past the congestion. But when you got to go hard at a contest....you go.

Brander is a weakness and sould be replaced with Sheed or Nelson on wing.

Get JJ or XoN in. Need youth to kickstart us.

Some people's fascination with Brander makes little sense to me. He's just a third year player learning a new role, we have far bigger issues. He's doing fine. Just drawing attention because he was a first rounder, which isnt fair. What about all the senior players earning 4 times what he does who cant even get a kick? Perhaps focus on them.

The stupid thing is that Simo doesn't need Mitchell to work it out. Every second post on here is pointing out the bleeding obvious its that simple to see where we are going wrong.

Even commentators are writing about it. Jono Brown wrote our team looks unbalanced, players in wrong positions.

Is it arrogance that our coaches don't see this and refuse to move the magnets around the board?

What don't we get?

Brander is polarising in a way that is a cross between Masto and Darling.

Masto was the clubs whipping boy. A solid career, and loyal servant to the club. 215 games, premiership player (and another GF appearance), but supporters felt he was a bust given he was drafted as a consequence of us cashing our chips in the Judd trade (pick #3).

Similarly, people look at Brander and think - we could have had Tim Kelly in 2017 draft if we picked him over Brander. They look at everything we gave up to get TK two years later and resent Brander for that. Even though those same people would have melted if we chose TK with pick 13 at the time.

People vacillate wildly on Darling from being the second coming, to a much maligned figure for his minor short comings. Interesting for Jack, this has been the case since he burst on the scene in his junior days, to the point where some clubs wouldn't have drafted Jack, at any pick.

Like JD, Brander has every attribute to be an out and out star of the comp, yet he hasn't shown as of yet, that he will fulfil the hype of "the best key position player in the draft".

This article sums up the publics relationship with JD, and it was written before he was even drafted:

Brander just played his best game IMO. If he had of pin pointed three kicks better (they were clangers which cost a couple of goals) he would have been close to BOG.

Compare him to other talls with less than 10 games experience and he's doing ok.

Agreed. In order of concern I’d have Hurn, Kennedy, Darling, Redden, Cripps, Petruccelle >>>>>>>>>>> Brander. I’d also worry about playing Naitanui for a whole game while we have Hickey and Williams gathering dust. Stop babying the bloke and friggin use him will ya Simmo!

I'm on the Brander train.

Pumping games in to him is paying off.

He is the only player in our team whose performance is improving every week.

Read a stat that Nic played 69% against Brisbane.

Looks like they are building his TOG.

When was the last time Nic played 3 games in a row? Probably 2018.

Can confirm, Darling is an easy player to dislike for West Coast fans 🙆‍♂️

As far as Brander goes, i'm scratching my head at all the calls for him to be dropped as well.

Why would you turf the most promising young player we have out the team? It's not his fault WCE made him slim down and turned him into Marsder.

Absolutely we should have kept developing him as a KPF, it's straight up sad what we've done with his development IMO, but that's a separate issue.

Brander just played the best half of football in his short career on Saturday. I thought, finally this is what we've all been waiting for. It wasn't until the game got killed off by the umpires in the 3rd, the senior players failed to lift and Brisbane went on their merry way did he start making errors like a crab.

The fact he actually put himself in ball winning positions and he found so much of the pill should be a positive.

Bigger issues in this team right now than a 3rd year hybrid KPF.

I need to ask, is this a tongue in cheek post or serious?

Brander IS youth. But you're advocating for dropping youth due to weakness but then bringing in and relying on youth to get us going.

I'm very confused. If it's a joke I need some emojis to guide me.

I think Brander did some good things will the ball last weekend, especially in the first half.

My concerns with him are more what he does when he doesn't have the footy. Hopefully those first half glimpses give him the confidence to add to his defensive game and provide more of a physical presence.

Having him in my outs at the start of this thread was largely reactionary, DS is quite right in that he's hardly the biggest issue we have and that he should be persevered with.

Branded is improving with every game and last week was indeed his best performance so far.

The issue is that he is certainly being played out of position, and in a position where his mistakes can prove very costly (see his clangers last week that resulted in direct goals).

I think he must be persevered with as he's a very promising young prospect and is improving every game. He definitely needs consistent games to get used to the pace and flow of the game, and to gain some much needed confidence.

The issue is; he's being played in a position he's not suited to. A role which he won't end up playing for his career moving forward.
I'd much rather they played him in a roaming 3rd tall role, the role Waterman often plays or that Tom Lynch used to play at Adelaide.
Then we still get the pro of using his marking ability up the ground (he took 8 marks last week, equal 2nd highest on ground) whilst still preparing him for a position that actually suits him and will be similar to the role he'll end up playing for the rest of his career.

That's conjecture.

It's going too far to say he isn't suited to the role. It is closer to the truth to say he is playing a role he hasn't played before.

The reason he is on the wing is his running power, agility and marking prowess provides a point of difference. He has played 3 games in that role, and in two of those games, his team mates played like rubbish.

We need to a larger sample size.

What Brander has shown this year is an ability to learn and adapt. Each one of his games has been better than the one that preceded it. I fully expect him to have a breakout game in the next month.
