Dont think Williams has the ability to put the weight on like the rest. Some just dont put mass on for whatever reason. He is the Brent Staker of rucks
Based on what? It’s not like BW is a skinny rake. His strengths are his leap and athleticism, if he bulks up too much it takes away some of that as well as his ability to cover the ground.

He has been trained to play as a mobile, athletic third/fourth tall forward but keeps getting thrown in to cover as full time ruck. No.1 ruck is not his preferred position so he has never trained to build a ruck specific body shape.

If the Hawks won the premiership then maybe id do that pick alone for Rivers
Why ?

Rivers is contracted so it would take something of value to make Melbourne budge .

Rivers is a very good HBF better than duggan and cole who are best 22 .

The thing is rivers has been very good playing inside mid in the absence of petrecca .

He would be an instant afl quality mid to slot into the gut who is also very defensive minded being a defender .

Hawks pick will end up pick 15ish after bids so it doesn't even guarantee an afl quality player

Another answer would be to not massively, massively overpay someone who’s played 10 senior games just because they play a position we’re deficient in, when that position isn’t really that important in the scheme of things.

The most recent premiership rucks
Darcy Cameron
Rhys Stanley
Max Gawn
Toby Nankervis
Toby Nankervis
Scott Lycett/Nathan Vardy
Toby Nankervis again
Jarryd Roughead

Apart from Gawn they’re all good honest toilers at best.

We don’t need a million dollar ruck. We just need someone who can compete. We thought we had that in Flynn but he can’t stay on the park.
Its why ive mentioned Reidy/Pittonet/Reeves as well . All 3 seem to have that ability I feel

I dont think hes worth a early-mid teens pick.
15 for Rivers +3rd rounder id do.

Cos we keep offering contracts to potatoes like Jack Graham as opposed to going younger and the like
I’m also hoping that Graham doesn’t eventuate. Would much rather throw a few Hail Marys in the 20-24 age bracket. There’s no reason that some of the guys mentioned on here (Dev, Garcia, Carroll) couldn’t have similar upside to Massimo and not cost much, although most are inside mids which is fine for us. It’s just a matter of who we can get across. Would also be keen for someone like Peatling, Davies or Sheldrick who may cost slightly more but not heaps and should be keen for the more opportunity that we will offer in their best positions.

Would prefer the 20-24yo you mentioned but nothing wrong with Graham for probably average salary cap space. 4 years does seem a year too long but hopefully that last year is minimum $. We are in dire need of role players. Graham will stick at his role and put his body on the line. Lets Reid play forward a bit more who should’ve had 3 goals in a quarter. Maybe Yeo to be the one to take the game on at hbf or the number 3 pick to settle into afl world back there/

When a forward we picked up in the MSD who hasn’t had a professional full preseason can get the stats he had and influence by playing a role in a half. It’s a role we have struggled with all year. No idea if he can do it consistently (definitely not at this level)
-18ds (11 contested)
-5 clearances,
-nearly 300m gained,
-3 tackles.
-5inside 50s,
-1 goal,
-79% DE,
-7 Score involvements

A serious half of football. Doesn’t include just throwing his body at the ball and tapping it to a team mate in the clear. He did seem a little lost sometimes when he had to ball but geez fair half.

I’ve been a critic of of him playing as a forward off the back of one WAFL game and really only providing forward pressure and tackling but very happy with that.

Interesting to see just from that half where he trains in preseason

That would be alright if or when Bailey wins a ruck tap he actually taps it to a teammate.
Yesterday I thought he actually did pretty well in the centre bounces. He gets beaten convincingly in the ruck contests around the ground which is damn annoying but my biggest bugbear is defensive work. His opponent always gets off the chain and is very damaging.

Rivers is contracted until 2027. He's a decent player but I don't know that I'd be going there. McVee is contracted until the end of 2025 so I'd go after him instead.

Complaining about the ruck is a West Coast perennial.

Let's not forget that even when we had Naitanui up and about, his taps were often getting sharked by better opposition midfields.

It needs both the ruck and the mids working in sync.

We really are late to the party that AFL rucks pretty much need to be 205+cm nowadays unless they are athletic freaks (Nic and Paddy Ryder, even then they were the last generation), or absolutely 4th mids (Grundy).

We’ve continued to invest through the draft in 200/201cm rucks who are struggling (Barnett is young, but also seems to have gone backwards).

And, as a forward, B Williams is at his highest ranking on our list right now. A Reid will overtake him soon, maybe Livingstone also. He puts in, never question his effort, but he just isn’t a #1 ruck and his backup position is literally the single area of the ground we are stacked (tall forwards plus depth).

Williams issue isn’t so much his height it’s his weight/strength. Most of the guys he’s up against are 5-10% heavier and stronger and 2+ years older. The other issue being that he hasn’t been prepared as a number one ruckman he’s prepared as a fwd.

He just needs to get in the gym and put on strength and weight and prepare to be a number one ruckman. He’s still only 24 which in ruck terms means he’s still developing. His best is in front of him, the club will know this and so he won’t be traded despite the calls for it in here.

Exactly, its not just Waterman out some kid in.
We have JWilliams ready to go, and Darling for another year while Archer continues to develop, while still having Bailey at a stretch who can make a marking contest if nothing else as a forward, and Oscar obviously.

Adding Draper to the midfield and lalor as a fwd/mid would be huge for us for the future
JWilliams is an interesting prospect.
Does one or 2 good things a game.
Lets hope he can up that but it might never happen.
AReid looking more likely I think but both are showing enough to trade out darling and BWilliams

Watching Dambrosio tearing it up for Hawks makes me wonder if our club has any guts to do the same. Find a player knocking around on a flank and chuck him into the midfield/wing.

I think James Tunstill is the guy. He will literally be free. Can play on a wing/outside . Seems worth a shot
Well Hutchinson went ok yesterday but I'm assuming we drafted him to play midfield and not in the forward line

100% no. We need someone whose ready to go tomorrow, not wait another 2 years while we get destroyed in the centre

Liam Reidy, Ned Reeves, Nick Bryan, Marc Pittonet, Ned Moyle

Drastically overpay one of these. I know Ned Moyle signed on but 5 years 4 mill and see what happens at this point. Nick Bryan id give a 5 year 4 mill offer too. Marc Pittonet can get 3 years 2.1 mill. Reeves can get 3 years 1.5 mill. Reidy can get 2 years 1 mill

Figure it the hell out
We've still got a ways to go before we're competitive again and have flynn ,JWilliams and a few others around so getting someone who's not quite ready yet wouldn't be the end of the world

I know that but im talking about a nuclear contract offer. One that will make his mumma cry cos he can buy her a million dollar house and still have money left over that was greater then Gold Coasts offer
Sounds like a list management decision we won’t regret in the future….
