Review Dees v Roy-Bears: the Good, Bad & Fugly

*Hardly convincing but we got the result we needed.
Funny thing about this result is that it wasn't quite enough. It was a win, but not enough margin, so now we need another win to be certain. A big win today and we could have put our feet up next week. Oh well, nothing like having to prove yourselves to make the 8. I don't mind it.

I'm still dumbfounded that Vince is allowed to take kick ins. Absolute momentum killer when he gave Beams another shot just seconds after spraying one
When he plays defence he does at least one of them per week! He isn't a great defensive player either and doesn't provide much rebound. Surely Vince plays midfield or, failing that, Casey going forward. Been a gun for us but I think his age is starting to show.

Brisbane are one of the better wooden spoon sides I've seen in recent times, and I think are a victim of there needing to be an 18th placed side in an 18 team competition rather than being genuinely shit. Credit to Dayne Beams, that's as big a reaming we've got from a midfielder since Fyfe tore us a new one a couple of seasons back.

Was at the game, thought we were well beaten in the air but otherwise came to play. Absolutely ****ing relieved to get the 4 points.

I'm surprised Mathieson wasn't booed, his ducking debut was one of the more memorable moments of 2016 from an opposition viewpoint and he was back to it today. Pedo clearly just thought **** it by the end. I would never wish injury upon anyone but it's going to be hard to have any sympathy the day Mathieson gets sent to Epworth.

It was an absolute master class from Jesse and 'Roaming Cam' Pedersen. Thought Gawn was putrid again and our mids were well beaten, but Jones and Oliver lifted after half time. Lewis was very good and Melksham is God.

Some of the 50's against us were soft but most of them were ****ing stupid on our part. What was Tyson thinking? I honestly thought we were going to lose at half time.

Fair call. However I rate Brisbane higher than quite a few clubs, and I feel they played well too. This was always a danger game. Without Hogan would we have won? If it was played at the Gabba, again, not sure we would have got the result. So I'll take a fairly unconvincing win any day over the alternative. We would be incredibly stiff to not make the 8 from here. Surely we get close to the pies, even if we don't win. And surely the Crows get close to WCE, if not have a convincing win. I'm very confident we're in the finals now. But you're right, not a bad thing to still be an outside chance to miss, as it means we still need to bring the heat next week which I think is important.

This week against Collingwood is a full dress rehearsal for the real thing. With how we are traveling, there is no way we take the foot off the pedal. Quite the opposite. They need to crack in like it is an elimination final.

Gawn needs to put the umpires out of his mind and just run and jump at the ball. And the midfield needs to get that manic aggression at the ball back. 10 weeks ago we had one of the best midfields in the comp. now we're a touch lame

Good
Got the job done in a must win game.
Brisbane have been in decent form and battled on, they have come a long way since the first half of the year with Beams back and Zorko on fire. Makes a big difference when your best players are in good form. Despite all the talk of a flogging it was highly unlikely to unfold.
Hogan, Pedersen, Petracca,Melksham (great goal sense, a lovely kick on both sides and his job on Zorko was crucial) VG
Lewis and Jones solid.
Lewis was visibly frustrated with how wasteful we were in the first half and said as much on tv at half time. Under 'Good' because I'm sure he'd be a steadying influence with younger players.

Bad
The 50m penalties...dumb, dumb, dumb.
Didn't close out the game after kicking 4 straight in the last qtr and let them swing momentum back.
We missed Viney in the clinches.
Vince wreckless
I don't see it with Wagner.

Ugly
Gawn has been giving some silver service lately...would be good if he gave it to our blokes.
Beams losing his s*** in the 1st.

Good- Hogan was brilliant, posted in his thread that when he gets on the move hes a gun. Kicked brilliantly aswell.
Jones was a monster in the clearances, I reckon we have forgotten how good he is because blokes around him have stepped up but he is just a bull and he doesnt get tackled to the ground or dispossessed ever. His kicking is very good aswell.
Hibberds first half especially was brilliant. Going back with the flight and taking marks and just being an all around beast.
Oliver once again fighting his way though a heavy tag, does it without giving away free kicks at the stoppages the kids a beast.
Melksham has become a bloody good player for us, tagged Zorko out of the game and hit the scoreboard again. Could feed africa with the amount of humble pie and im loving that Goody was pretty quick to re program him after thinking he could be a HBF
Cam Pederson is the best second ruck in the AFL right now.

Bad- Despite some sooks in the game day thread I still think our team over used Hogan in the first half. He was good on the lead but we dumped it on his head a few times when Hannan/Harmes/Garlett had 1 on 1s or were free. Seemed to balance it out a bit better after half time so that was a good correction.
Vince having 4 disposals to half time, whats the point of having a bloke in the backline who cant defend if he doesnt even get the footy?
Lack of over head marks that the defenders take either down the line or in the 50. The better teams mark it in defence and can rebound from it but we seem to be a spoil first team. Part of the reason Tmac went back and Frost out id guess
Not putting them away, at 32 points up if we had taken it to 50 that would have all but sealed a spot in the finals for us ( in saying that the Lions are the best 18 side ive seen. They were better than the saints last week.

Ugly- Billy Stretch has regressed big time as a footballer, would like to see if we can turn him around but when you start going backwards in your 3rd season its a bad sign especially when someone like ANB has rocketed past you as a footballer.
Josh Wagner i think is an ok player for depth but he had a shocker. Got himself in some good spots and let himself down, dunno if it was the pressure or not but he struggled.
Max Gawn is having no impact at all, looks like hes running in concrete boots. Lost all connection with the midfield and isnt taking marks around the ground. If he didnt have an AA behind him id be dropping him and going with Tmac and Pedo in the ruck and bringing in Frost to play on a smaller forward so he can use his flair.

Going with a glass half attitude after yesterday's win, 12 months ago with the season on the line we failed against Carlton. fast forward 12 months and despite nerves we just got the job done, i think next year games like that we need to put the foot on the throat and really kill the contest and win the game by 50 points, but i think that will come with more experience and confidence.

Great point about the dump kicks, last week we barely had a long bomb into the 50, this week with hogan in the long kicks were more frequent searching for him. I noticed a couple of times we bombed long when we had targets around 40m mark. Sounding like broken record here but the times we control the ball by foot is when we play our best footy and our pressure is at its highest - probably gives us time to set up better.

I think stretch is really getting caught between the game style he should play, last year he was really free running outside player, this year i think Goody is really getting him to work on his inside game - they make mention of his tackles and contested ball numbers in the vfl review. I think another preseason and he will develop his all round game.

Gawn seems really spooked by the frees against him, doesn't seem to run and jump with the same confidence as last year - i wonder how much his ankle is troubling him. Pedo gave us more drive in the midfield when he was rucking yesterday - could also been the fact he was up against Walker most times. Gawn also seemed to really slap the ball out of the stoppage and each time was going to a lions player which gave them some really clean clearances.

Jetta's decision to handpass to Oliver in the last quarter instead of kicking the ball when we had a 32 point lead and all the momentum almost cost us the game.

It was a horrible decision but you can't blame the next 10 minutes on him

I think if we'd been offered the chance to be in this position before the season, we would have taken it
I said exactly this at the game yesterday. Fact is, we've now won 12 games which is a significant improvement on last year. Finals wasn't a must this year. It was always going to be a bonus (for me anyway). It's true though, now that we're here with a big chance, i'd be gutted if we don't make it. We should be proud of the team though. With the injuries and suspensions we've have had to overcome this year (and I think we are still kinda paying for it I reckon).

We've played top 4 footy when we have been up and about and with a full strength line up. And, like most other sides around us, we've played ordinary footy at times too. We'll be right, but anything from here on in is a bonus. We've most certainly improved from last year, and that's all you can ask I think.

Next year though, I'd want finals as a minimum

Good:
I was actually pretty stoked just to have come away from that one with a win. While it would have been nice to have capitalised better on the momentum we had at the start of the last quarter, Brisbane came to play and played well! No doubt in my mind that they're significantly better than Norf now; probably belong around the Collingwood level IMO. For anybody thinking that I'm just making excuses for a poor game/effort by Melbourne, then you need to go back and check my posting history - that's not my style. Was it the best that we've played this year? Of course not, but I reckon we would have lost that earlier in the year. We were challenged by a decent team having a crack, and got the job done.
Hogan, Pedo, Trac first half and patches thereafter, Clary second half, Jones in waves.
I'll put my hand up as being very anti-Melksham until recently, but he's been good for a couple of months now. He's won me over. Doesn't do anything brilliantly, but is certainly best 22: "handy type".

Bad:
I think Gawn's carrying something... or maybe lacking confidence in his body after the injury... or maybe cooked after coming straight back in after 3 months out. There were a couple of marking contests on the member's wing where he just didn't jump. Also a couple of chases, or where the ball was on the deck, where... okay, most ruckmen aren't graceful like the cheetah when running, but he looked flat-out proppy. Tehre's something not right there.
Vince is cooked. What has happened to Billy Stretch? I don't understand how being asked to tackle more or improve your inside game can destroy your composure as badly as seems to have happened to him. In the nicest possible way: Josh Wagner, thanks for your service, but we need to go in a different direction.

Fugly:
It's been said by others, but needs to be said again: Bitch-mode Mathieson. He's probably going under the radar a bit because he plays for Brisbane, but as they rise and get more attention, he'll be the most hated player in the competition.

The main thing I was worried about this year was we didn't know if Simon Goodwin was a dud coach. I'm fairly convinced now he isn't and I've got confidence in our list going forward.
