Fairfax Media asked each AFL club the following questions:
  1. Have any of your club officials or players been interviewed or contacted by the Australian Crime Commission or police acting on ACC intelligence?
  2. Do your players take supplements or vitamins orally or by injection?
  3. Do you require players to sign waivers, consent forms or non-disclosure agreements regarding any such treatments?
  4. Advertisement
Do your players undergo injections or intravenous treatments administered by staff other than qualified medical personnel?
  5. Are you confident organised criminals have not infiltrated your club?
  6. Are you confident your players and staff have not acted illegally?
SYDNEY SWANS SPOKESMAN
  1. We are not aware of any club official or player being interviewed or contacted by the ACC or police. We are fully supportive of the AFL stance on protecting the integrity of our game and would fully cooperate with any investigations if required.
  2. Like most elite athletes, our players do take approved vitamins and supplements in consultation with our dietician and club doctor.
  3. No.
  4. No. All treatment is overseen by our club doctor.
  5. We have no reason to believe organised crime has infiltrated the club.
  6. We are confident in our policies and procedures and have no reason to believe our staff or players have acted illegally.

I don't know what others are talking about, this doesn't answer anything and is not direct at all. Phrases like 'we are not aware' and 'we are confident' and 'we have no reason to believe' are all very wishy washy statements to later absolve us of lying if stuff came to light. Also doesn't answer directly whether or not we are injecting our players with supplements - either legal or illegal. These answers do nothing to belay any concern.

The response sounded like it was penned by Julia Gillard to be honest. Not saying anything untoward is going on and a certainly hope there isn't, but that hasn't filled me with any great confidence.

We had Craig and Charlie Walsh as coach and fitness advisors - responsible for winning cycling gold medals during the East German drug era. We were known for very fit and strong teams.

I would be VERY surprised if it was not us :-(

This post didn't seem to get much attention. It should have.

We employed Charlie ****ing Walsh? His wiki says he was working with Adelaide from 2004 to 2011, though google brings up a few news articles from the official Swans website that mention him... though when I click on them they just redirect to the current homepage rather than the articles themselves...

The more influence he had, the more I would be worried.

I agree, that was a thoroughly unconvincing set of answers.

Post by was by a Crows supporter. ;)

As for the answers I thought ours was one the best.
Some clubs failed to respond at all, others responded with general statements, whereas we answered all the questions in what I thought was a reasonable manner.
The club simply can't know definitely for instance if any individual has been questioned by the ACC and so it seems to me to be quite appropriate to use to 'the best of our knowledge' type answers.

As for the injection question not being answered, it may mean we do inject legal supplements or vitamins, but our responses makes mention of all treatment being overseen by our club doctor. The injection of approved legal supplements/vitamins should not necessarily give rise to any great concern provided it is properly administered.

Do you mean because the tests might miss the peds they'd be supposedly taking? It would go a long way to reassuring a lot of paying members like myself that the swans want no part of this issue and have nothing to hide.

Yes, very much so. The tests have been almost worthless, which is why the heavy reliance on the investigative route.

I can only hope that we can get rid of that s**tstain Tom Waterhouse from our club.

Yes want him gone, do not like the association at all, next as far as I am concerned they can drop QBE, ruthless mongrels the lost of them. I have friends who had to go through QBE and it was a nightmare, they have subsidurary companies in the Insurance game. I pity the poor buggers in QLD trying to get anything out of them. I have been a member for 25yrs and I cringe when I see that insignia.

On a side note, I can't see how we can continue to have a bookmaker as a major sponsor after this.

Not supporting Waterhouse but overnight the sport corruption people gave Australia a thumbs up on match fixing, as opposed to drugs standards and reiterated the threat came from off the grid betting, most regulated sports betting market in Autralia is among the cleanest in the world and the threat comes unregulated markets in bookies outsie of Australia, by punishing bookmakers and punters in Australia doing the right thing, the illegals will get as stronger foothold in our market. hats what we dont want to happen.

I do appreciate the irony that the Waterhouse family gambling origins very much began illegally, long before Todd was born however.

I was satisfied with the answers and to the point to put ut into perspective this is how the nfl clubs answered.

I don't disagree and don't have a problem with sports betting (some exotics aside) however it just isn't a good look, especially when handing out "free" bet voucher before a game.

Surely there is a conflict of interest when our sponsor frames a market for a game in which we are involved. I am sure there is nothing untoward, but with Tom getting around the club, it's not a good look.

So you can then be sued for libel. A few years ago there was a thread regarding Dale Lewis's comments about recreational drug use among Swans players. There were some seriously defamatory statements on that thread, and they're all still there. Any defamation lawyer looking for some work could do worse than check it out.

Oh, sweet thanks.... Joking, just joking..... Seriously, please continue with your tirade against Tom everyone, please just continue. :p

**Betfair is much much better...

I have no problem with those answers, im sure the club had the legal guys look over the wording. But obviously it did leave open the possibility that we may have players that may be doping, but we'd be lying if we said we were absolutely certain that no players were doping. We also said that all treatment goes through the club doctor so if they want to investigate they can get their info from the club doctor. They answered no more than they had to, well done i say. Have any clubs answered in an unexpected manner (ie saying yes to questions?).

The very direct "no" to the issue of waivers, non-disclosure agreements, etc, as well as weather anybody other than a qualified doctor is involved in the supply and administration of supplements, is a very good sign. Similarly, the fact that none of our players or staff have been interviewed is also promising (though they say "we are not aware", that is something that they would probably be aware of if it was happening, so it does actually mean something).

All that taken together is fairly promising. You're never going to get anything concrete out of that sort of thing, but indications are good.

If you watch the Season Review dvd with Magic and Skilts, some of M's comments seem sooooo dodge if you hear them with "drugs" in mind

Just putting this out there

only one player from one club being investigated for PED's, and multiple players from the Essendon team, interestig bit was 'without consent or knowlege'

To be fair the questionxs the NRL clubs were unanswerable.

You have no idea if someone from your club has been interviewed by the ACC and to if you did to answer yes could jeopadise an investigation. While our answer was smarter I have no issue with the no comment answers from the NRL clubs.

The questions to the NRL were loaded for No Comment answers to look bad but there was nothing the NRL clubs could do.
