First game I can see a plan or style. Attacking handball, tackling chasing pressure with intent...
I agree, thought same at half time, for the first time this year. Good signs, good running/overlap, speedy play-on, but ruined by poor skills.
Wtf happened in the 3rd quarter? Anybody? They stopped most of that.
Was it centre/clearance/stoppages set-ups?

Worst season would be Fitzroy’s one win season - 1995 was it? We will be lucky to match it at the current rate. Every team thus far has shown “something” (well, perhaps not the Dees, but the rest). Saints after a woeful effort today will towel us up.

Freo 1-21 in 2001 I reckon is the worst.

It's simple, everyone had a pass mark except for 3 who should be dropped

Matt Crouch - useless, if I was coach those 2-3 spirit stripping turnovers in the 3rd equals a month in the seconds. With the stupidity of the stat gathering across the body kick from the sideline, it was a terrible example for the younger players and exactly what Greenwood was referring to, stats over effectiveness. Back for a month at least, who cares about stats, judge him on kicks, metres gained and score involvement only

Laird - shifted forward and continued to be useless. We have Macpherson to take his spot now, Brown down back, Hamill and Smith providing run. Thanks Laird, go and find out how to be effective as a HF or HB in the 2nds

Sloane - shell of his former self, clearly injured, a liability.

On notice - Mackay

They won 2 that year, Hawks and us in the last round which cost us a home final. Doesn't get much more Crows than that.

Young Talent Watch

Jones - high impact player, started the game in the inside midfield and as soon as he looked good we moved him out of there (to wing/forward). Bizarre

McHenry - starting to add a bit of cream onto his pressure game, had a few really nice moments, building nicely from a tough half forward role

Hamill - looks excellent. First instinct is to take the game on which is unlike basically any other defender we have

Doedee - just fantastic, love watching him go about it

McPherson - looks like a solid player, nice composure and tidy skills

McAdam - final quarter is another glimpse at what he has, which is definitely something. Would benefit from decent inside 50s

McAsey - looks more comfortable as a forward, but playing on McGovern is tough

Frampton - our leading goal kicker, doesn't wow me but is proving serviceable

Stengle - disappointing, missing that gimmie snap goal from point blank was criminal for his type

O'Brien - thought he competed hard and was one of our better players around the ground, ruck work was uninspiring but not awful

Keays - towelled up Gaff, building nicely into a defensive mid role

Unfair on O'Brien. Beaten in the ruck by phoneman, but how many aren't? O'Brien killed him around the ground and outmarked him one on one twice at least. 19 possessions and no way were his marks all junk time.
Liked Jones 1st half. Classy player and once he gets a bit more muscle on, builds his tank and 50 games under his belt, he will be hard to stop. Such good tackles for a bloke his size and weight.

Nah, Jones is probably the fittest player on our list. Has been top 5 in the time trials from the moment he's entered the list, pretty sure he won it this year too.

Really just needs more inside minutes and for us to break up the Crouch-Crouch partnership.

I don't get it. Jones started the game on fire then spent the rest of the match on the wing or in the forward line.

The change happened as soon as Matt Crouch came on the ground in the first after starting on the bench.

It doesn't take a genius to know Jones needs to play the entire match in the middle
We love to make things difficult and learn the hard way. Nicks might be influenced from our clueless football director or he doesn't have a clue. We need a strategist in the box that knows their shit to help him. Not sure he was the coach we needed. Time will tell but we definitely need a complete cleanout of assistants. This is the year to do it while there is quality out of a job. They better be working on it now.

yeah, I reckon I might have suppressed the memory of that Crows v Freo game.

Keays did an underrated job on Gaff. Kept him to just 12 touches with something like 6 at 3QT

For a player that routinely destroys us, we finally decide to tag him and it works

Usual Crows move to be Johnny come lately’s, Gaff’s role‘s changed to not being the main influence it once was, in fact GC, Brisbane & Port didn’t send anyone near him and let him rack it up a few weeks back and it had no influence on the result, where as Sydney & Adelaide tag him out the game and they win easily.

Mackay had a very typical Mackay game. No more, no less. Brushed off it a few times 1 good kick followed by several bad ones. Lots of hospital handballs, the usual.
Mackay was MacMEH.
Was he on the ground in the second half?
Did a few good things (one really good pass into the R forward pocket, some good running/handball); unacceptable for 14-year player. I notice the odd few good things because they're rare. Overall, undone by the mediocrity of no impact in general.

So let's establish the baseline

Chayce Jones - 11 disposals (82% DE), 1 goal, 2 clearances, 87 meters gained, 2 score involvements, 5 contested, 15 pressure acts, 1 turnover

Now for the senior midfield

Matt Crouch - 29 disposals (69% DE), 0 goals, 3 clearances, 449 meters gained, 2 score involvements, 10 contested, 13 pressure acts, 7 turnovers

Brad Crouch - 23 disposals (70% DE), 0 goals, 5 clearances, 304 meters gained, 2 score involvements, 9 contested, 9 pressure acts, 6 turnovers

Rory Sloane - 18 disposals (78% DE), 1 goal, 2 clearances, 163 meters gained, 1 score involvement, 4 contested, 11 pressure acts, 3 turnovers

Brodie Smith - 31 disposals (71% DE), 1 goal, 1 clearance, 662 meters gained, 4 score involvements, 7 contested, 8 pressure acts, 6 turnovers

David Mackay - 16 disposals (68% DE), 0 goals, 1 clearance, 186 meters gained, 3 score involvements, 7 contested, 12 pressure acts, 3 turnovers

---

Aside from Brodie Smith, Jones once again provides a similar impact on the game to our senior mids from half the touches

Tom Lynch - 17 disposals (88% DE), 1 goal, 0 clearance, 166 metres gained, 3 score involvements, 5 contested, 7 pressure acts, 1 turnover

Rory Laird - 17 disposals (76% DE), 0 goals, 1 clearance, 133 metres gained, 2 score involvements, 3 contested, 13 pressure acts, 3 turnovers

Luke Brown - 11 disposals (82% DE), 0 goals, 0 clearances, 197 metres gained, 0 score involvements, 3 contested, 3 (!) pressure acts, 2 turnovers

Jake Kelly - 10 disposals (100% DE), 0 goals, 0 clearances, 120 metres gained, 0 score involvements, 1 (!)contested, 7 pressure acts, 2 turnovers

Will Hamill - 12 disposals (75% DE), 0 goals, 0 clearances, 171 metres gained, 1 score involvements, 7 contested, 7 pressure acts, 6 turnovers (sold into trouble about 100 times)

Andrew McPherson - 9 disposals (75% DE), 0 goals, 0 clearances, 129 metres gained, 3 score involvements, 5 contested, 6 pressure acts, 1 turnover

Not just the mids. Our veteran outside connector / small defenders didn’t outperform two kids with 5 games between them

You may be right and hope you are. My take on it was that he was moved out of the midfield because he was out of petrol. Maybe that wasn't the case. He was very good in the 1st half, but didn't notice him much in the 2nd and figured that was stamina.

Look, we didn’t set the world on fire, and we still lost... but we pretty much all expected a ten goal flogging today and it definitely wasn’t that. Some really positive signs from the kids and Smithers wound back the clock. Very disappointed with Crouches x 2, Sloane and Laird. I’d like to see Nicks make a statement with them. I saw no point in his selection and other than a very good pass to a target (which we haven’t been doing AT ALL), I see no point for Mackay being in the team.

Uhh, what?

Ken McGregor played 152 games in 10 years. Mainly as a CHB and a Forward. For the last 2 years he was injured a lot. Jonathon Brown rated him as the hardest player he ever stood at CHB. It took him a long time to really cement a spot. He played in some good Crows years. Very underrated player.

I mean, its possible, especially as time trials don't have to deal with knocks/heavy hits etc.

I do suspect it's a trust or an issue with how we're selecting our midfield moreso than Jones though.
