left field question

Anyone know if there is footage from any of these old practice games??

Didn't know we played the Dees in Portland USA

Are you sure that wasn't Portland in Victoria?

Thank god - it’s almost time to rename this thread to 2025 and finally fix the incomptent typo

You’ve given me an idea

Thanks

So this photo was posted on the AFL Facebook. 2007 Draft, Ebert/Danger/Masto

F***ing hell, Dangerfield looks about 12🤣

View attachment 2168005

He was still only 17 in that photo which is partly why he was a controversial choice by Adelaide at the time. Stayed in Geelong in 2008 whilst he finished studying and only played 2 games for Adelaide late in the season. Adelaide passed over Ebert who was the popular choice for supporters

And I don’t know why he was eligible for the draft whilst still only 17

I think most were 17 when drafted back then. Pretty sure around 2015 was when the change in age cut off finally caught up and year 12s were turning 18 while still at school (in WA at least).

The real question is probably why Dangerfield had an extra year of school compared to everyone else.

Dangerfield was an April 1990 baby along with Cotchin and Ebert. A quick look at some of the other 2007 draftees came up with most being 1989

Whilst looking at birthdates, I did recall Naitanui being ineligible for the 2007 by just a few days. His birthday is 4/5/1990 so the cutoff back then must have been 17 before April 30

As far as I can see the age was raised in 2009 to be 18 in the year you’re drafted

Kindergarten was the hardest 2 years of Dangerfields life

WA was late to it but half the kids over east turn 18 while in year 12. So it was just the norm for him.

Think Battle or someone a few years ago was still in school in their first year and they we’re turning 19 that year

Apologies if posted elsewhere, but a positive, balanced take by Daniel Garb an Drew Jones on the trade period and recruitment of Andrew McQualter, so plenty of fodder for those negatively inclined to challenge/have opinions on.....

Good listen and good perspective.
The trades were probably not ideal but also not the absolute disaster being made out either. I guess we will find out in the fullness of time.
One point that I thought was well made and gets overlooked, is that by bringing in Baker, Graham, Owies etc and raising the floor, if it does have the desired effect of getting us more competitive next year and winning a few more games, it gives Reid something to stick around for and that really should be one of our most important priorities at this stage. I don't think whoever we pick at either pick 3 or pick 12 is likely to have the impact that these 3 will on us getting a couple of extra wins next year.
Also great to hear about the coach appointment process and how impressive it was seen by some quarters. Gives hope that the new administration has its shit together.

In the ongoing quest for every social media to be GWS.
If all the blue were home games it might have been kinda neat.

Yep agree. But your post won’t be popular here because it’s lacking in negativity.

First, I agree we paid too much for Baker. Okay. Get that?

But I’ll stick my neck out and say there is a possible scenario where the club recognised some influential-senior players were coasting, but with long-expensive contracts and an embarrassing Beagles, there wasn’t much that a coach (new or old) could do realistically.

And that with a young list this coasting would set a really really really bad example.

But maybe bringing in some older successful player(s) could shame these coasters. The locker room can be a full on environment where very strong comments can be disguised as banter. So maybe Baker and Graham come in specifically to do a bit of revving.

So long as they’re best 25 then if this is their role, I’m okay with it. If it helps the young guys realise their potential, great.

Of course we can’t tell from the outside. And if we ever do find out it might take a while.
