I know they commentary is all upbeat ... and the positivity around the team from and in Tasmania is great... they finally have a team ... although it will be a long time even before we see any team on the ground...

the constant reference to kids not having to leave Tasmania ... seem counter to the idea of submitting to the national draft. Not every kid in Victoria stays in Victoria etc.. Not every Tassy kid will end up playing for Tas.

Its like they almost feel its a state of origin side... use Devils, use the state of origin jumper which will have to be altered as it will not pass muster to be used each week...it will probably cause clashes with someone.

Perhaps the excitment of the entry is understandable... once they actually see them playing in the VFL the reality may be more obvious. If they can build a competitive side from day one with half Tas players they will be doing well.

The quality of football / competition in Tassie is a mere shadow of what it once was, and the number of talented footballers being produced has declined accordingly.

The state will not field a competitive AFL team without significant input and concessions by the AFL.

Problem is, it's a win win for these clubs, no different to them playing in Blacktown or Gold Coast.

For the Big4, games against Hobart/GWS/GC are loss makers, they can't get 60k+ to those games at the G, let alone 25k to Marvel (lol). So they're happy to play those games away because it means they get another home game against a bigger club. AFL also likes it, because it promotes tourism and boosts crowds in these growth areas. I'm sure the Tassie gov would have signed a contract with the AFL for a certain # of games involving the big Melb clubs for each season, they'd be fools not to.

Whereas for us, we're close enough that the big clubs have convinced the AFL to move our home games up to the G to give them an extra one for free, all in the name of boosting crowds.

It also boosts Geelong's revenue, and it wasn't that long ago that the club were very open about how excited they were to play home games there, with that being one of the big reasons.

Rather than fighting Warner Bros for the use of the Tasmania Devils moniker, surely the new team should be going after Richmond to take over the use of the moniker, Tigers

Sure, the thylacine lived on the mainland at one stage but it's most commonly known at the Tasmanian Tiger, and that's the location in which it last lived

Who else wants to see that happen 😎

Small problem being that it wasn't a tiger in any way, shape or form, but facts and logic have never bothered the AFL before.

The club had one foot out the door because we were broke and the Docklands on paper was gonna be a financial boon.

History says otherwise and we’ve slowly been able to walk it back. Considering we’ve always played 1 game in Melbourne historically since 1970 not sure we’ll ever be given 10/1 or 11/0 again, but we should start getting every club every couple years to compensate

The quotes I remember were from 2007/2008.

I have not seen the Coates Talent Leauge players... any idea on that team... the u18 Tssy team is apparently on top of the CTL? Must be some talent there.

Of couse I agree. They must drag talent from elsewhere... Dangerfield came up with an idea this morning that would see every club give up a player ..contracted or not ...they would be considered Free Agents .. and would be able to go... and probably as each club contributes ... not fussed on compensation.

Id imagine that would ruffle feathers. Not every player asked would go of course.... but imagine if they were given a three year period of increaced sal cap to attract players as well.

Be quite a list pick one player from each club

Lets say Max Holmes fresh off the 2027. Brownlow medal , Max King the 2026 Coleman medalist, Aaron Cadman the 2027 medalist , Josh Rachele, Will Ashcroft , Sam Walsh, Issac Quaynor .... etc

Of course then there is access to the Tassy kids .. and draft picks. Yes there will be the Cowans and the others...that return. They could be competitive quickly dependong on access to talent ....but I think we both agree ..it will mainly be non Tassy Talent

I think the key will be to ensure they have all the ingredients for a well-run and stable club even before their inaugural year.

I'd give them an AFL salary-cap from next year and say go after the cream of all the State leagues - whoever wants to come to Tassie for a decent crack at an AFL career + they get to participate in the AFL draft like any other club (as if they'd finished bottom). See if they can work up to dominating the VFL for a few years, develop a winning culture, some team ethos/chemistry, a few exciting youngsters.

Then in their inaugural AFL year they get to top their list up with a number of AFL players with a bonus salary cap for 3-4 years to attract players in. Give them x draft points which they can either choose to take to the draft or to trade for established players.

Can't force draftees into a few years of VFL with no possible chance of cracking an AFL game, particularly if you're giving them choice picks. Like your ideas in general though.
