$ really talks all languages doesn't it.....and compromises all sorts of morals principles

On the plus side they'll be less political pressure attacking the anti syphoning laws. Prevously the government had to go against the full Murdoch press.

Wouldn't surprise me if Amazon et al win the next right deal. The last one had a bit of rat ****ing to keep it with foxtel in the first place

When foreign companies have the rights it is a bit of an issue long term for mine.

Foxtel had everything and cut it back to the bone and based the business model in the end around AFL & NRL only basically. Tennis, Basketball, Rugby etc were all kicked to the curb and became second class citizens.

If you have a foreign company that has NFL and soccer rights, then as far as Dazn are concerned, AFL & NRL are effectively their rugby union and they will cut and run when it suits them. The next TV rights will be interesting.

This seems a weird thing to be proud of & hyping up - since 2021, the Saints have played 1 final, which was an EF loss to the Giants at the MCG in 2023

Go back to the 2010 GF, and since then they've played a total of 4 finals with only 1 finals win - they've been a rather mediocre team over the past decade

But sure, flex away about no longer being one of the oldest teams

I thought...ah good, won't be paying money to Rupert anymore! Then looked at the owner of DAZN - Sir Leonard Valentinovich Blavatnik, a Russian oligarch that Ukraine has sanctions against. 🤔
Oh God

Is it too much to ask to find a billionaire that isn't a massive POS?

Apparently yes

Seems the main thing that turned over there was the goal posts

There are systemic reasons why St Kilda are shit, it is more healthy of them to accept their lot and celebrate it as a virtue and far more preferable then have them whine about it all of the time.

With the cost of living crisis there are many more economically disadavantaged members of the community loitering around their neigbourhood requesting a megre assistance then in the past.

To the billionaire, everyone they face meets that criteria, with the cost of assistance decreasing with in their every moment, with their resources they have an reach greater than most. Ever breath they take is in denial of the wellbeing of their "fellow" man. The principle is not too disimilar to how we expect our sportsmen to not be too much fo an arseh*le.

I read a great book on Russian history, revolutionary Russia by Orlando Figes. He had a great takeaway about the points in history where England, France, and Russia all had revolutions. All happened at very different points in history with differing outcomes, but they all happened when the literacy rate hit about 42%.

Why? Figes made the claim that 42% was the point where jobs like store clerks that required literacy and provided careers away from the farm were then easily filled, paid less, and often weren't hiring. Young men who spent large amounts of their time and their impoverished families money getting an education found themselves unemployed or under employed. Those men drove their various social upheavals.

I've often thought of that number in the context of uni grads. The number doesn't have to exactly match for the effect to be the same, people can drop out and so be disgruntled with a help debt etc. But in Australia the number is 36% and climbing. I, like most millenials, have some good friends in that boat and many are not happy campers.

The relevance here is that I've been seeing a hell of a lot of "eat the rich" type opinions on socials following young Mr Mangiones recent escapade in New York. To a level of acceptance of violence I've never seen from otherwise normal people.

Which is a long winded way of me wondering out loud how many footy fans are wondering if they'd like to try Russian long pork. Not me personally, I would prefer to stay out of it

I think for the most part Australia, is a victim of a drive by shooting, where the internet algorthims of larger markets bleed into our society. How many have that relative or an acquantance we avoid who became MAGA. There are two types of problems, once that are world wide, and those that are Australian specific, I see the Australian specific ones as being quite solveable even if there is little will to actually do anything about them beside complain. Our university debt system is pretty egalitarian, even those who get little from their education are barely affected by it.

Historically speaking, I think the a revolution in communication added to wealth inequality is a very dangerous thing. Increased literacy is an example of it. The third rail is usually a rural-uban divide, which we get to dodge, as our country is overly urbanise to begin with.

I think the USA is uniquely place to focus tensions within, with their lack of any safety net, with the propensity for people to move far away from their familial support networks for education/employment. Plus the nation has a love hate relationship with ostentatious displays of celebrity and wealth. In face of that it doesn't surprise me when people who are struggling and hurt by systems that unnecessarily hold people down, and take joy when the dog bites back.

I hope not.

Amazon would be as useless for afl as paramount plus (well paramount minus really) has been for soccer.

We're definitely copping a drive by. We really just need to fix housing really. Still, feels like the narrative is getting out of hand a bit.

A few weeks ago, I found myself in a used book store, I was reading from a book published in the 70s, whose topic was focused on the housing affordablity issues of the day, it explored how their has aways been a housing shortage since federation.

No government action in that area could really make a dent into it in the short term (won't stop people holding the goverenment accountable), especially as it is a large portion of nations retirement savings. I think the government creating an education to employment pipeline focused on construction, through a public corporation, harking back to the post ww2 construction boom, is probably our best bet, using a land tax of some kind to funds it. Can't see that winning an election though.

We are so used to simple easy solutions these days it's hard to spin an investment
