I don't have a problem with that, Tuohy is a longer term and more durable prospect, but if Deledio was happy to take a pay cut then surely we could've afforded both. Unless we've made a real mess of our salary cap.
Think it was move assets, both Richmond and Carlton wanted the first round pick

If you had any sense of the kinds of traders Geelong are (i.e. soft), you'd know this strategy of an increased presence at the trade table wasn't going to work out. I told you it wouldn't, and you didn't want to hear it.

Maybe quell the unbridled optimism and try looking at things critically once in a while. Better yet, why don't you just try to apply the same standards you use to judge Hawthorn to Geelong for a minute.

Key words right there.

Once in a while........not never, nor 24/7

You are clearly one of the best going around these parts, Parts.

But the fact you don't respect the club for taking an attitude that puts the lives and livelihoods of its players into the mix when considering its decisions on list management doesn't worry (or surprise) me in the slightest.

It's also clear that you don't respect my viewpoint on these matters either. And that's all good too.

In the end, I don't just follow the club to see us win flags. As beautiful as that experience has turned out to be. I'm also proud to support a footy club that seeks to combine a desire to 'play the game as it should be played' with an ethos that we 'treat people as they should be treated'. Rather than treating them as pawns in a mercenary quest for fleeting glory.

And while this is all no doubt both anathema and 'blue sky and rainbows' to you, it is definitely part of the attraction of the GFC for me.

Each to their own, of course.

Because I do respect your opinion that my viewpoint on this subject is entirely unworthy of respect.;)

Add me too.

It looks like we sunk all our planning into how much we can get for Steve Motlop.. Once we came to the realization that noone wanted him we struggled to find direction and were left floundering for relevance.

Not disappointed to see Caddy go but he defiantly went for unders to Richmond.

3/10 for us this trade period.

Freudian slip ?

I've heard that excuse a few times.

It doesn't make sense if they were also hoping Boris & Jimbob would play on.

Can't blame it all on Motlop's fat wage.

Just looked at the drafting numbers last 10 years. Disgraceful, haven't developed an A grader since Selwood. Time for a change. Anyone who thinks we are near a flag is kidding themselves. Danger and Selwood put on brilliant years. Hawkins delivered, Enright was AA. The rest give me a spell. We've achieved nothing last 5 years yet carry on as if we are winning flags

Gee whiz I haven't really looked into it but that's really worrying. Selwood was picked up at the end of 06 and is our last drafted A grade star, I'd put Menzel in there but injuries have hurt him.

I guess since 07 we've won 3 flags and been up there bar a slip in 2012 and 2015, but it'll all soon catch up to us. Our lack of talent is a serious concern.

How deep is a deep draft? We are proper stacked up for picks between 60-90. We chose an unusual way to trade into the draft to say the least. There is <1% chance a guy taking after 60 will become a decent player.
We won't be using pick 60 in all probability.

My contention is the primary goal of the football club must be to win premierships. If they can also look after players fine, but it shouldn't come first. I get the feeling it's almost become more important than building a list capable of winning flags. Could be completely wrong. Really hope I am.

It's actually not that the ethos isn't admirable or worthy of respect (it is), it's that we can't expect other clubs to behave honourably just because we do. The world doesn't work like that.

You're right though, if it comes to competing for a flag, I want what works. If that means being hard nosed and less than accommodating to players, so be it. Playing the right way doesn't mean much with no trophies to me, but again, you may be right. You could be completely correct. I'm just concerned that we're heading for a decline. We'll see.

Have not had too many high picks of late. Smedts was a bust.

Wells is a brilliant recruiter but is soft on giving players what they want needs to show backbone. Should have refused to trade caddy for what was offered as he was contracted. To trade out a first rounder and not get one in for josh is a tactical fail. Unless motlops salary has blown up the cap something silly trading josh for 24 is not justifiable.

Tuohy trade was good. In terms of our best 22 its net gain but we should have got more at the trade table. Wells should stay as recruiter but hocking should do trades from now on.

Dont rate either kersten or black so its a nil all draw.
Vardy is pathetic to walk out for what he did after all the faith the club has put into him.

Anyway move on hope we get some good kids and tom stewart in the draft.
I agree totally p_o with what you've said. After a cple of early venting tweets, I did settle, atleast we're 1 player up on the crows....geez you think cat's supporters vented, adl was worse over Gibbs.

Back to the subject, I really think next yr should be our last yr at aiming for flag. Regardless of having the two sels, pfd, TH. They are the last that can really squeeze another effort for a flag, apologies to mack and lonergan. I've seen a few sides in the 22 for 2017 link and it shapes up ok, on 1. Natural progression of our kids plus a bit more from the rest. We need to get back in the draft, as much as I want to see jsel capt a flag & pfd deserve one.
Thoughts?

I think you need to look at 2015 and 2016 as a pair, we have to remember this years first round formed part of our great pick ups last year.

The lesson for me going forward, Never ever trade high future picks unless you have a 99% chance superstar, and I think we achieved that this year.

Yes we lost Caddy, Vardy and Kersten, but hopefully that frees up a few things for next year.

I am a glass half full and feel that what looks bad on the surface will actually help us in the longer term.

My only concern is that Tuohy has cost us a first round draft pick next year, but we needed to get a defender so those are the breaks.

My only beef with the final day is Hawthorn got O'Meara, I really thought they would hold their position, but sadly flinched when it counted.

**** I hate Hawthorn.

Something seriously fishy with the blues giving the Hawks exactly what they needed for very little return...
Lot of dodgy dealings from the Hawks this trade fortnight...

Vardy and Kersten we had no leverage so lost both trades.

Caddy and tuohy we had the leverage and they both had fair outcomes for both sides.

I think a tad more ruthlessness is needed from wells. We could have got a little more in every trade.

No doomsday though. On to the draft.

Considering we are in the win now mode, I rekon we'll look at Barlow to try and offset the loss of Caddy somewhat even if it's only for depth/insurance
Forget Barlow, waste of a list spot.

Fyfe's the one who is attainable next year.
