Petch, Rioli, Cameron are supposed to be the the next gen small forward/mids.Coupled with ainsworth, foley, XON and venables who were all meant to be prolific ball-winning midfielders. For whatever reason none of them have come to fruition.

The 5 year forward line is Darling, OA, Ryan, Rioli (?), Williams, Waterman which is still leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else.

5 year midfield is Gaff, Kelly, Sheed, Yeo, Williams. Which I’d back-in to beat anyone.

I don’t think it’s panic stations, but we essentially have 5 years to get replacements for Darling, Gaff, Yeo.
wereyou an eagles supporter from 2007-2017?

5 years isnt enough

Regarding new coaches or staff, remember everyone including players are working on half salary and may continue that way..so Simmo was saying it's not easy going forward to attract people to footy employment. Those they have are largely out of passion for the club.
But yes, we need a strong/smart midfield coach, preferably a great ex-midfielder...

I don't know what the deal will be with Rioli, but obviously his eventual return would be invaluable. Meanwhile we have players like Jermaine Jones and Francis Watson coming through. Out of all that were exposed this season JJ stood out in his brief time along with Bailey and Exon. Didn't see enough of the tall defender who was knocked out in his first game? Venables is still an unknown. An improved Cameron should emerge.
We have an oversupply of talls and defenders, we need more speedy groundhogs!

The problem with that finals game was the return of too many players coming off injuries, Yeo being out and Pies playing out of their skins and carving us up with the angles..(leaving the umpiring out)..also one missed set shot gone straight from Jk or Darling or Cripps and the game was ours...that's footy.

Simmo has said he can see JK and Hurn returning, it'd be their call not to...
We certainly have the quality cattle and all the pieces to put in the right places, not sure about depth. Hutchings might go?
If it is to be another covid season, maybe more relaxed, we have that experience from a W.A club view and can only be stronger for it.
It was a season way out of the ordinary for everyone, so can't be too hard on the team and coaches. The Qld hub was always going to favour the eastern seaboard, even S.A teams.
Reckon we still have a great window, just feel for NN, Gaff and Shep, to keep them vital for next finals!
* Also we need to improve our weakest links in the best 22 - it's an obvious thing to say but you know the old saying "you're only as strong as the weakest link in the chain"...

I’m going to preface this by saying we’re absolutely primed for another tilt. The doom and gloom I’ve heard on the radio is incorrect. People retiring JK when he’s had 7 shots at goal in a final are morons.

We need to address the 1%ers. To often we allow teams way too much space to dispose of the footy. We’re slow and lazy to man the mark. I know we want to trap them into kicking down the line, but I still think we’re taking the piss a bit with how lazy we are.

Tackling/forward pressure also needs to improve. Need a fully fit Jones and Cameron in the team. Potentially a 4way wing forward rotation with waterman-Ryan-Jones-Cameron.

No more Allen in the Ruck.

Yep, replace Ah chee and Petch with JJ and Cameron (both fit, in this scenario) we win that game (no disrespect to Collingwood, I know they had players out - I am just focussing on our largest area of weakness here). If we can get those 2 fit it will help a lot (and if by some miracle we have Willie in 2021 too it will be fantastic).

I don't have an issue with Allen rucking, but (and this goes for when NN is in there too) we have got to have a tough defensive midfielder in there at every stoppage. We all love Shuey, Kelly and Sheed, but that is a midfield expecting silver service from a ruckman. Duggan seems the obvious one, but I think we need another mid to be more defensive (not sure who available FAs are, but there are usually 1 or 2 crash and bash types available).

An ideal tackling coach would be someone who was at the club for a long period of time and was exceptional at tackles. Hmmm who could that be

Is tackling coach actually thing? It’s a pretty common sense process. Just get the best tacklers at the club (shame he’s in the Tiwis) to mentor the other players.

You'd probably get some rugby lad in....there is certainly technique in it.

AFL clubs have been getting Rugby people in to teach tackling for decades, it’s not that some of our players can’t do it. It’s more that they don’t want to do it. Not in some of the players DNA.

I was looking through the stats today to do a bit of a squad breakdown and there is one player who had 4 tackles all season, from 18 games. Oh my. Anybody want to guess who?

Why what did he look like? The general vibe would have been pretty shattered I’m guessing unless he was even more shattered than the others

Just re-watched it.

He looks into the crowd and does one of those spins to look around and take it all in.

Waterman gives him a little around the waist hug as he walks past.

No doubt he walked off not knowing if he will be back.
