Hogan made a mess of us. Brown got the luck he missed in the prelim last year and didn't miss. Tom Green controlled the midfield. For us, only the Daicos brothers seemed really switched on in the middle. The giants completely shut down our running game, and then emulated it. We seemed helpless in the face of the controlled kicking from their back line. We were usually forced into dump kicks from ours. Known fumblers like McCreery were at their worst.

Observations from the ground:
  • It’s a bit moot whether Cameron or Cox is our better ruck. The point is that both can play ruck, but only one of them seems to be able to play forward at the moment.
  • Schultz marches to the beat of a different drum at the moment, but he’ll be OK and will find connection with his teammates in time. Hopefully it happens quickly because our forward line aren’t connecting well. They’re getting each others way a lot, ball being kicked to nobody. I remember Luke Ball early days was having shockers, but Mick said “don’t worry about him, he’ll be fine, give home time. He’s no chance of being dropped”.
  • We’re going to be in trouble when Pendles and Sidebottom hang up the boots. They’re still a class above anybody else.
  • Charlie Dean baptism of fire playing his debut game on Jessie Hogan. I thought Dean played alright, he’ll be better for the run.
  • JFN brought real spark when he came on. Starting 22 next week, but not sure who for.
  • DeGoey had an off night, looked listless out there.

Will Murphy come back? What is the sticking point? Will he wake up one morning and suddenly feel he is ready to put his head back in the hole when his turn comes? I think the fact he is so unsure is a sign it may not be happening. I just don't understand what it is that will make him decide he is ready.
Mate all reports are he’s fine and feels fine, no effects or anything, I don’t know why he’s waiting but he is stepping up training doing semi contact work, The intention is definitely to go on.

If Pendles isn’t fit and carrying something then rest him and bring in Fin

All pre-season my concern for 2024 was how we’d manage the older players. Given we brought in an underdone Pendlebury and Mitchell wound up subbed off, not a great start

Fin and Reef need to come in next week. Reward the pre-season form if you’re gonna be about “selection integrity”

We played against a team that made the prelim, not much difference in preseason starting times
Although may be a big difference in how long celebrations went.

Also, we have more players over 30 who traditionally commerce training later.

It’s not an excuse but I don’t think our preparation for Round 0 was anything like last season where we also made a PF.

Yeah, WTF didn’t Callum Brown play like that when he was on our list ?!?!

(Yeah, yeah, I know)

Do you get to play one hundred plus games while playing lots of shockers?
I would say that of all 100 gamers in league history he would be right up there in terms of the percentage of those games that were shockers. He’d be running at 25%.

Anyways well done to GWS. I knew you'd beat us. They wanted redemption in a round 0 game. Make that make sense. We still beat them in a way more important game of footy so they can carry on as much as they want but we won the cup and they didn't.

Also I'm surprised that Jordan played poorly. Thought he'd have a great game.

McCreery looks no more likely now to become a one grab player than when he started his AFL career.

Seriously Kirby, do you really want to argue this?

Playing an interstate team I round 1 is BS.

Particularly coming off a flag and being used to promote their brand.

The only bullshit is your carry on about having to play our first game interstate. Let it go, the draw is the draw. We didn't lose because of the draw. We lost because they played better. Result likely would have been the same if we were playing them at the G.

For the record, this century the following premiers have played interstate R1 the following season:

Brisbane 2002
Port Adelaide 2005
Sydney 2006
WCE 2007
Geelong 2008
Geelong 2012
Hawthorn 2014
WCE 2019
Pies 2024

It's not that uncommon and likely could have been a higher number if not for the opening game of the season being allocated to Carlton v Richmond aligning with Richmond winning 3 flags in 4 years.

He was there tonight and if he was ready, both physically and mentally, would have played.
