It makes you appreciate how sublime and clutch our kicking was when it really counted in the biggest game of the year, the GF.

Round 1, Meh.

Got beaten by the better side, but our inaccuracies allowed them to shoot at will with no pressure.

That performance won’t be replicated again this year. Bookmark this post.

He was given a baptism of fire. The Giants were pumped up and red hot and our defense was already missing two of our best defenders. He deserves another chance to settle into his role.
There's a danger of going 0-2 if he plays next week. Can't take that chance. There are easier games for him in the later rounds

Last year.
Seriously Kirby, do you really want to argue this?

Playing an interstate team I round 1 is BS.

Particularly coming off a flag and being used to promote their brand.

Despite all our errors the biggest was the AFL’s decision to schedule the two grand finalists to start the season 1 week earlier than 10 others clubs.

Our footy was very reminiscent of a practice game, which shouldn’t come as a surprise especially for the more experienced players who had a later start to preseason

We played against a team that made the prelim, not much difference in preseason starting times

Compare tonight to round 1 last year against the reigning premiers, Geelong.

Our effort tonight was polar opposite to what we showed right out of the gate last year.

Plenty of time to resolve, but this one was lost between the ears of the coaches (preparation) and players (desire, effort)
But Geelong would have celebrated hard after being crowned premiers and started late.

They also commenced the season with some injuries as we have.

I don’t think the desire wasn’t there. 2 regular backmen were missing and a 1st gamer (who incidentally hasn’t played even a BFL game for almost 2 seasons), had a big role to play on their key forward.

Our connection with the forward line just wasn’t there. But, we had our opportunities with more inside 50s and very ordinary conversion.

Nothing is insurmountable. Match fitness, forward line opening up.

Leading into finals we were blown away by the 3rd bottom team.

Let’s see how we fare back at the MCG.

Cox played forward a lot of the game and was useless. When he is useless he is super useless too as he has zero ground game.

He was in a serious race with AJ to the bottom tonight. 2 useless forwards with no defensive play at all.

It left too much to Checkers, Schultz and Beau who all worked their butts off.
what did Wrighty think of the game?

so does gws only get big crowds if they play one of Carlton or us or Richmond so the afl can get one up on nrl which is a joke

Nah, not any more.

GWS crowd was decent tonight, and were up and about. First time I think they’ve ever outnumbered us.

Similarly compare gws with our performance against the cats in R1 last year. Both us and the giants were coming off 1 point prelim loss and looked like they wanted to take steps to avenging that

One game down and the reigning premier appears to have weaknesses all over the field. Backline monstered by Hogan and Callum Brown ( a slightly better footballer than his namesake) Daniels too slippery for our smaller backmen. Positive was Maynard's excellent performance on Greene. Seriously miss Howe ( hopefully back next week), but the 33 yo like Pendles will need time to find touch. Same goes for Murphy, but his return, if ever is up in the air. Even Nick, although our leading possession winner made some uncharacteristic errors. It almost defies logic how we won the flag without a big power forward. Checkers great, but AJ again a non~contributor. Surely Reef couldn't do any worse. Small forwards were also disappointing, but we should persist with the Schultz/Elliott/ Hill mix as they need to get as a combination. Cox also had one of his customary shockers, but is just as likely ( I hope) come out and star next week. Macrae has to be a chance to come in at the expense of Mitchell. A player that may be under the selectors' eye is Sullivan,a mature body who could be good value in the centre. The game reminds me of our Gabba performance last year and hopefully we can bounce back similarly. Let's hope for a successful turnaround next Friday.

Oh well, we’ve gone from Light Work to Back to work..
That was a pseudo first round anyway.
Steele,Checkers,Nick and Bruz had a check. Moore good early.
The rest were very ordinary.
Need to produce next week against Grundy & Co.
