Jesus are we still arguing about Witherden?

Is he shit? No. Is he good? No. Absolutely not.

His stats are a colossal joke as he gets dinky 10m chip passes around the backline constantly with zero intent to actually move it the ball forward.

If he's not getting those he's taking the free kick ins, running 15m then kicking it 40m down the line for another effective kick. Stat padding to the extreme.

His pathetic tackle attempt on Keith, their full back as he fended him off like a child and kicked that bullshit goal made me absolutely wild.

If we were a GOOD team, a C grade AFL player like Witherden wouldn't be playing. Likewise Duggan, Nelson, Rotham, Hedward's etc etc.

Witho is a AFL fantasy wet dream. Cruises around racking up kicks + marks and takes pretty much all the kick ins. Add to that the fact his teammates are always looking for him and it works a treat. Adds nothing to the ball movement but it’s ideal for point scoring as it’s always down his end or in his vicinity

I found a picture of Sheed in the WAFL. Totally agree mate, some of us see Sheed for what he is. I'll never forget that kick in 2018, but since then he's been hot garbage.
I don’t know what part of Sheed makes you think he can be an inside mid going forward? Cant stick a tackle. Can’t break a tackle. Can’t explode out of congestion. He’s an outside running midfielder, West and Clark are miles better than him. You also have a lot more faith in Yeo’s recovery than I do.

I think we’re going to be relying on West and Clark a lot more than you imagine.

I'm struggling to defend symmo anymore.

It's at woosha stubbornness Defcon 10 levels of stubbornness in his twilight years.

"I'm the man, I'm still relevant, I achieved something eons ago, I know best"
Imo Simmo leaves Woosha for dead when it comes to stubbornness - and that's saying something as I thought Woosha took the cake for stubbornness at the time!

One turnover according to these stats. Do you use different stats? I'm genuinely curious.

I've done a little rewatch on Kayo and I reckon you could 'blame' Witho for 2 goals. Up to interpretation of course. He was 'involved' in another two if that makes sense, as in he was part of the defensive line trying to stop the shot on goal but a goal resulted.

And yeah I know 'effective' disposals can be a bit too generous (a Jetta perfectly weighted pass into the corridor, a 40 metre kick down the line to a pack, or a 20m chip backwards to a free player, all 'effective') but it's still a useful stat.
While you did your rewatch did you see any attempt from Witho to open the game up and set up play like we recruited him for or just note the safe 10m effective disposals or long kick down the line?

If his disposal efficiency was like you have posted and he was a lock down defender like Tom Cole then that’s great, he’s not there to create play, he’s there to defend.

But Witho provides us none of either.

JJ had a shocker but at least he was constantly on the move, trying to take the game on and be creative. And we got him off the scrap heap

People having a go at our 'rubbish' middle aged and young players....what about if they played under a new coach or new game plan? There's talent in them...it's just completely stunted and destroyed.

Look at Josh Rotham. Speedy defender who took the game on, and was actually a decent one on one defender for his age and experience. Now he's a vanilla space guarder who can't kick after three seasons with us.

Nelson used to have mongrel and anger. Now he's a choir boy.

Luke Edwards, Jamaine Jones, Connor West, Luke Foley, Alex Witherden, Jake Waterman....show me these guys with a different setup.

Yes I'm aware Brisbane fkd off Witherden...but I have zero faith in our system.

There's a fair bit of truth in this.

Players turn up with AFL traits and in the space of a couple of seasons they are conformist trash or punted out the door for not buying in.

Our player development systems throttle the life out of the vast majority of our youth. It's no surprise our best looking players have been older recruits who have more maturity and can bring their own values to the table.

That is such a good summary of Rotham, Simpson has coached his natural game out of him.

Hope that Bond bloke reads this thread. Couple of posters have nailed the sentiment among supporters.

Namely how the club is a laughing stock in Australian sport and how kids don't want to sport a club full of unmotivated players. The club is so out of touch it's laughable. It's like they are the only ones who don't see how rotten things are.

I've been a member since 92, I have never considered not renewing. Yet, as I watch week in week out the absolute passionless cack we serve up, same tired excuses from Simmo, puff piece delusional emails from the club - I start to think is it worth my time to endure it?

Anyway, always have the scorchers.

Sheed is elite, imo, at clearances. Problem is, the opposition knows it too. So they scrag him at centre bounces and as he's slow, so he becomes useless.

Give him a little bit of space and time and he's elite. But yeah, can't tackle and can't chase
Sheed is an old school centreman, some of us still remember when there was a centreman, rover, and ruck rover. Sheed has always reminded me of Peter Featherby a champion centreman.

It's no surprise Brisbane got rid of witherden when they were in the bottom half of the ladder and started moving up the ladder.

He is a slow , shit defender who is an absolute momentum killer .

The way he glitches on the mark until the ump tells him to move it on is infuriating.
He routinely misses easy short kicks and never plays on quickly allowing the opposition to set up their zone to shut any sort of quick rebound we could of had .

The worst part is he gets so much of the ball .

Brisbane knew what they were doing getting rid of him under contract. They even paid part of his contract to not play for them

Delist
It isn't just me then... I thought that I'd developed Witherden train wreck Syndrome... where every time the footy goes near him it's like everything goes into slow motion.

PS... I remember he did 1 good break the lines positive attacking kick.
