Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Fremantle

That doesn't mean anything though as there are some players for some reason can't put it together when dropped and playing at WAFL level. Not saying that Hill is the answer to our prayers - was really just saying that he seems to save his best football when playing Freo, that's all.
The post I quoted asked why Cripps was still in the side when Hill is so much better

I like Hill and think he is unfairly maligned at times by supporters but I was just pointing out that he had a pretty quiet game yesterday that wouldn't have helped his selection prospects all that much

Cole doesn't fit into the team the team fits in around Cole. Wellingham is done, never want to see him in the team again. I think all of Duggan, Nelson and Cole are capable of playing up the ground and I hope we see two of them move into the midfield next year. Plenty of spots down back in that case.

Yeah I see them all as falling a bit short as midfielders, especially at their age. Got a few blokes already in Sheed, Redden desperate to get in there. They might persist with the Yeo to midfield plan too. With Karpany, DV, Lamb, wanting in too. Basically same as down back, half a dozen blokes waiting for 1 spot to open up. So essentially waiting for Priddis to make room. And he's just signed a contract extension anyway. Plus if Rioli goes forward thats going to push Cripps and Hill out of the forward line and those guys are too young to want to retire. Masten probably not going anywhere either. None of those last 3 belong anywhere near midfield [or best 22] but MC has a funny way of looking at things. Depending on where we finish, there's always a chance we get an opportunity to draft a genuine midfielder instead of half back flankers we think might be able to play mid, that kid immediately moves to the front of the line. Worse case scenario though, there's a genuine risk 18 months from now this list is going to have finally gotten rid of a heap of list clogging mediocre midfielders only to find the 22 again full to the brim with list clogging mediocre midfielders that they drafted as half backs. Hopefully Cole isn't one of them, time will tell I guess.

We capitalised on Freo's ineptitude more than doing much good ourselves. You could sum the game up in that 3rd quarter play where Priddis fumbles, Masten fumbles then tries to panic soccer the ball and kicks Walters instead, ball spills to Hill who misses from 20m dead in front.

I think I saw this game as pretty disappointing so my player judgements might be harsh but here goes:

Sheed - Forget the disposal count, I thought he was shit. He made so many poor decisions time and time again selling other people into trouble, he looked very slow defensively and can't lay a tackle to save himself, doesn't even give himself opportunities to tackle. His production was good, he knows how to find it and I'm not too worried about it but thought he was one of the main culprits of over using the ball.
Its probably not the best high 20 possession game he has had but i thought he got sold into trouble him self quite a bit. Was average early on and worked into the game later on.

Agree MrKK.
One positive, apart from winning against Freo, last derby at Subi etc, was Duggan, our future there.
(Someone needs to get him aside to sort out his mind kicking for goal though..hopefully comes in time. Missed a gettable one by a mile & didn't back himself in for a 2nd around 50 out, went to top of square). Think the lad is a gem, though.

Positive: WIN.Duggan was good.
Negative: Pretty sure any other team played us this week would have won tonight. 100% destroyed in the middle, For the love of god win a stoppage once. Got absolutely pansted in the middle, somehow Freo missed at least 5-7 easy shots. One of the most embarrassing wins I have witnessed. Great Game By Masten, Gaff and Priddis all AA form at the moment.

I wouldn't have him as a positive when our midfield as a collective was poor. He seemed slow of body and mind today, very slow and often poor decisions. Obviously I still think he's got talent but he didn't showcase much today. Most of our mids were poor.

agree not a positive. I did give him a HM in the votes that was mainly due to him looking better towards the end of the last half and not many others deserving it. Since priddis has come back, his confidence it self has dipped a bit.

Don't get too excited. Fremantle lost that game. We still don't man up with any conviction. Freo kicking points worked in our favour.

I still reckon an emotional coach is required. Masten playing instead of Partington???????? Wow

+ Duggan's polished performance in the back half - his best game of AFL.
+ Kennedy being back.
+ Darling with a strong performance - he was particularly clean today which is something he has been struggling with.
+ Hurn, McGovern and Barrass were huge at cutting off Fremantle attacks and that's where we won the game despite losing the clearances and inside 50's.
+ I thought Redden was good and that's probably the first time he's played that well with Priddis in the side which is a huge plus. Didn't turn it over much and even took a strong mark or too. Encouraging performance although admittedly my expectations of him these days are almost zero.
+ Gaff was better today than he has been.
+ I thought the effort level was reasonable all day even when we were getting overrun.
+ We won without Elliot Yeo who has become hugely important for us.
+ 26-20 and five derby wins in a row.

- The midfield got beaten as we knew it would.
- Fremantle leave us in the dust when it comes to midfield run.
- Despite the reasonable effort I alluded to the skill level in general wasn't good enough at times.
- This game was another example of our staunch backline carrying the load of the midfield.
- Shuey doesn't look himself. He laid a solid 8 tackles today and is working hard but can't really get himself into it. I hope he's not at risk of making whatever it is worse.

Had Bursitis of the shoulder before, can honestly be days for the bursal sac to drain and you can be right as rain, or you can have constant niggling and inflammation there for months with the slightest knock or pressure setting you back weeks. Got struck lightly on the AC joint which was the most innocuous injury but kept me out for months, happened again on a Saturday first game back and I was right to go mid week. Shoulder is the shittest joint in the body, absolutely cooked design really

i flair my bursitis in the shoulder every week when i play indoor beach volleyball and squash.. The pain is ****ed but i've had months off and first game back it comes back straight away. Also had it in my feet about half way down my foot. Actually got an injection for that and the pain finally went away after like 3 months.

Wow masten and priddis are worse than ever.

Boots must be playing injured because he isn't doing much either. Maybe give him a week off versus Brisbane to get his body right?

Gaffs game was overrated even though he did reasonable.

I'm concerned when Simmo talks about not wanting to make too many personnel changes. I realise he wants the team to gel etc etc but why does that statement come out now that all the old timers happen to be playing. My idea would be to back in some young players for a few weeks. Keep playing your dud burnt out players and your gonna have to make changes every week...

+ We won
+ Hurn, Duggan, Shep ... The whole backline. Won us the game as they have a few times this year (the first game vs Port springs to mind)
+ JK and Darling are back

- We didn't use Jetta as much as we should have. He got into some great positions and wasn't used
- Overuse of the ball (perhaps related to above)
- Shuey looks injured. Or maybe he was just effectively tagged out of it

Hills game will never translate to WAFL, he's not an accumulator so won't rack up possessions, and not a key forward type. His running into space is the type of thing that just won't be rewarded with WAFL level players.

Having said that we're talking about two options, Hill and Cripps, that aren't exactly massive needle movers for a team hoping to be top 4....

- A young Freo team beat us in tackles, clearances, contested possessions and inside 50's. We won as a result of their extraordinarily poor finishing and two career best games by defenders.

- another second half fade-out

- Masten and Cripps. Masten will go out next week but Cripps just keeps getting named week in week out. If there is a god Karpany's leg is better and Cripps suits up for East Perth.

- Slowest midfield of the year

+ How the hell we are only a game outside the four I don't know, but we are

+ Kennedy unscathed and back in the hunt for the Coleman

+ Duggan is going to be a fine player for us, perhaps our next captain

+ Really cant think of anything else, Hurn was outstanding of course but its almost a negative the numbers he racked up.

+ Sumich on the radio bagging Cripps "I hate players who continually run back with the flight into the 50 looking for the easy but low percentage over the topper - you've got to stop then present up at the footy". Should be our coach.
