club site says yeo went h2h with Steele.
This... And with Steeles disposal numbers down, but tackle numbers up (13) our mids must've won enough ball.

But Hutch still did a few good things in our def 50.
I was surprised he had under 10 touches.

Weird game, Hedwards & Rotham had a pretty rough day but if you watch the first quarter, they both do a lot right.

Ive shitcanned Rotham for a while but i keep remembering Glass in his first 50 odd games .He was shocking. The bounce that Rotham tried running out of the square was actually the right option as he had a lot of space in front of him.The execution was .....well leave it at that.I never bag younger players for taking the game on.

I see Rotham as a skinny Glass. I think he has a lot of potential.
Most of the games I see, he has a few Jack Darling-esque fails, but because of his position we often get scored on when it happens.
I think he's a good runner, works hard, good kick, and when he doesn't panic, is a good decision maker. I think once he loses the panic factor, he'll be a very solid player.

Think there were more positives than negatives that came out of this one. At the game it was evident the saints had set themselves for this one, and early on they were throwing everything at us, but we were not only staying with them, it was just some silly mistakes the kept them in it, so wasn't at all surprised when we kicked away in the second.

In the end in their favour they had:
  • A career best game from Max King. Literally has never played that well before (and more on that later...)
  • Zak Jones also in career best form - his last three games has been the best three consecutive games he's ever played
  • Some of the best intent and effort they've put in this season
  • Some very, very, very, very generous umpiring that, in particular, kept them in the game when it looked like we'd blow them away
And we still won, despite losing Ryan in the first few minutes, and the goals we gifted them from unfathomable errors (hi Rotham) and the goals we didn't kick due to unfathomable errors (hi Waterman).

I think given all that - we were awesome and it was a great win.

And back to Max King for a second - against the Eagles this year Max King has kicked 11 goals at 5.5 goals/game. Against 15 other sides he has kicked 19 goals at under 1.3 goals/game. Seems our issues with monster key forwards are set to continue :(

He was drafted as running back flanker and developed to play as midsize/third tall defender. While I rate him and he has had good games, we’ve taken his natural game out of him and funnily thats the sorta trait our defence needs atm.

He kept Steele quiet by not playing on him at all. That's an impressive effort! Make him captain I say.

It actually looked like he was just playing as a mid. Didn't tag (or even line up on) Steele at all, and didn't tag anyone else either.
Hutch can be BOG from another state. Keeping a bloke quiet from across the field is child's play for the great man.

I know Schoey gets mentioned a lot in these parts when we say we need a lockdown defender but I think prime Mackenzie is the tall defender we need. Apart from his odd kicking and decision making, he was a formidable stopper but also a defecent intercept mark too. Harry Edwards looks to be going the TB/Gov route but hope we develop his defensive ability too.

Pretty good game really for two mid table teams. The problem with that sentence is being mid table feels a bit underwhelming. The first half quarter or so was pretty dire but once both teams got into a bit of rhythm the standard was pretty high, albeit there's nothing there that will give much worry to any of the teams above us.

After the last month it's hard to know what to take out of these two wins, but 8 points is 8 points and the performances have improved a lot. But the season has sustained too much damage, so any late season charge we make is - 99.9% - going to be too little too late.

Running out of legs again has just became a common theme this season. It's not really been an issue at the club, at least not to this extent, and certainly during the Cousins/Kerr/Judd era we were more or less the fittest team in the league. This can't be turned around at this stage of the season, but it's going to have to be a priority over the pre season.

My biggest neg from the weekend was probably Brander, whose first half of the season was such a huge improvement and it really felt like the investment was about to pay off. After some waning performances and an injury I thought he'd come back pumped, but it was back to 2019/20 version of JB. Hesitant and not taking the game on at all - I can only really remember one good passage of play where he won a contested ball, spun and got a hand pass out, but that aside was really just a passenger. Hopefully we'll look back on this game as a bit of a "sighter" for Brander, but if this is the standard he has reverted back to, I don't know where we go with him in the off-season.

Rotham made a few mistakes, and unfortunately for him they really stood out. But he did a lot of good things too. Took a load of marks (as usual) and was generally alright with the ball. I've liked what Rotham has bought to the team thus far in his career. That being said, whenever TB gets back I think it could be Rotham that makes way. HEdwards has shown some great signs at fullback, even though today wasn't his best day but 1 - Not all of Kings goals were kicked on Hed, and 2 - King is going to cause a lot of backlines many headaches. It happens. We can't fit all four of all our tall defenders in the team, and Hed (for now) brings the more defensive focus that balances out the intercept focus that Gov, TB and Rotham bring to the team.

Didn’t Riewoldt kick 10 on him one afternoon? Some say Eric wasn’t on him for them all but still.
Eric was still a very good defender.

Rotham won some great contests, made mistakes but he's been crucified for playing it too safe recently, would rather he get in the mindset of taking the game on as he's not tall enough to be a purely lockdown type. Games like this should only be seen as a positive for his development, he's the future.

Painfully obvious we don't have a lot of small forward movement into the 50 without Ryan Rioli Petch. Cripps had a good game but O'Neill and West as forward flankers is a waste - at this stage I'd be giving West more midfield time (he looks to take the game on and is hard as nails) and dropping O'Neill for a legitimate forward. Too bad we have none in reserve, maybe a good game for Winder to come back in.

Waterman was ok despite the misses - can criticise all you like but he's always involved (hard to do as a third tall forward) and needs clear runs at some form to sort out goalkicking etc - rest Oscar who looks cooked.

Edwards though badly beaten will grow from the experience - he's beyond WAFL now and the more he competes at this level the better he'll get - still remember EMac having 10 goals kicked on him by a young Jack Riewoldt. Will take time but god we'd all love to have a peak Eric right now

Jack did in 2010 but but the years between 08-10 him, brown and schoey all copped bit of a bashing at times. He really came on in 2011 and by 13 was one of the best key defenders at the time.

Unfortunately one of those guys that was never the same again after his ACL injury

Two key items of note:
- The Rotham hate was probably based on 2 fundamental errors, the mis-bounced ball gifting the saints a goal in Q3 and the missed spoil on Max King in Q4. Otherwise he was pretty excellent, 15 touches at 100% DE and 5 intercept marks.
The same stats that say Rotham went at 100% have him down for 4 turnovers so something is wrong there.

A long kick to a contest is classed as an effective kick, that stat can be deceiving at times.

From memory one of those turnovers came late in the last where Rotham played on and kicked it up the line, Saints rebounded and kicked a goal. Just a poor judgement call and if he had stopped and slowed the play down with some composure it wouldn't have been so costly.

Here i thought Rotham had taken huge steps this year and was finding his feet looking comfortable at the top level.

One bad game and it's time to fold?

It's not just one bad game though DS. Against Norf he fluffed that short kick to Sheed that resulted in a costly goal also. He was also dropped a few weeks before that.

Rothams start to the year was great, but similar to Allen he's dropping off the longer season goes on
