Review Positives and Negatives vs Sydney

Good to see Hutchings is back on the hate bandwagon after his first full game back...;)
for what it's worth I thought although he didn't use the ball as well as previous weeks as the sub, he didn't give away direct goals like Selwood did in previous full games, and his one errant handball under pressure was the same as Shuey and Yeo had. However, his pressure on the tackler in the contest was very good. Not his best game but not as bad as a lot of people are making out.

The rest of the positives are that we beat Sydney in the midfield, which is good because they have a very good midfield. I also thought Tommy Barrass did well for a first gamer. He held his kicks up a bit, but he probably did that as he reads Big Footy and knew he'd get called to be delisted on everyone here if he shanked one kick...
Has anyone been particularly critical of Hutch, I felt the consensus was workmanlike but forgettable game. Not really high praise but hardly a lynching.

Yeah a few have been calling for him to be dropped straight away saying he turned over the ball too much but I watched to see what he'd done and he only had two handballs that missed and one was from someone elses hand stripping it as he handballed it. He wasn't great in all aspects, but he didn't cause goals for the opposition, hit some decent targets and his tackling was pretty fierce at times in the clinches. I'd give him a few more games and if he's not up to scratch then give Colledge another go if in form.

I'm probably reading too much into it but what is with the number of shots at goal that were so low they could almost have been touched by Sydney players? I swear I saw at least 3. I wonder if it has anything to do with our accuracy in recent games.

Could just be a coincidence though because Gaff has always done it, but I remember Shuey doing the same thing.

I thought the same thing at the time, Shuey had one, Gaff always does it but there was a couple of others too.. Really making sure we finished our chances!

Can't wait to watch the game this morning. Working away sucks big time watching replay's on my phone, but this time I'll be able to watch the dominance of Shep and co. on the big screen.

Shep was great. On the couch, Monday, night, they were giving him big thumbs up, him and Healy's new love child, Sinclair.
They put up some really interesting figures pointing to why we are being so dominant ... relating to time spent in the forward 50 and our scoring from that compared to that of other teams. Interesting stuff.

That was without doubt the most complete game I have seen from Priddis. That he played that game going against Parker & JPK was great to watch.

Shep is awesome. Him and Wellingham are so flexible in what they can do. They are excellent at 3rd man up, good when the ball hits the deck and good at not making body contact against bigger opponents and timing their spoils perfectly as to not get into a wrestle match.

NN's game is well rounded and nearly complete. Once the contested marks come on a regular basis, 2-3 per game he is there. I get the feeling people are waiting for him to be the most dominant player in the league and aren't happy that he is one of the top 5 players for winning contests he is involved in. "Sure he wins taps, never loses a 1 on 1, will be up in the contested marking stakes by the end of the year, ditto for 1% etc but where are the possession numbers of a Goldstein?"

My only negatives are that some players that are in the team aren't 22 but they are performing reasonably well. Sinclair, Hutchings & Rosa. But cant begrudge them as they are doing their job...just cringeworthy with skills, decision making etc.

Rosa is just about done for mine - next year will be his last IMO. Replace him with some real class and we become a much more dangerous side.

He's not a bad player but he's not extraordinarily good either and will be 30 at the end of next season.

Duggan will overtake him next year

Rewatching the game, heck me dead Sinclair had a blinding first quarter. Three direct goal assists (kick to JD, handballs to Priddis and Shuey) and offered quite a lot up the ground. Choo choo, I'm pulling the hype train out of the station.

Those three extra handballs a game Goldy gets are a real dealbreaker.

Yeah he was everywhere. Far cry from the first quarter against Port.

Yeah, I had forgotten about it, but I remember thinking at the game "Wow Sinclair has even been doing a fair bit of work at ground level". Seemed to have a real thirst for the contest even when not in a marking position.

Good game to watch, our defence chopped everything off instantly. There's a bit of pace in Shep and Wellers, loved Shuey's burst through the middle as well (scrubbed the kick though from memory)

Nicnat, aka best ruckman in the league, played awesomely, great to see him hit the scoreboard and clunk some marks on top of his normal dominance.

I'd completely forgotten about his performance that game. Was one of the worst I'd seen from an Eagle.
He got near it plenty of times. But everything he touched instantly turned to liquid poop. That was such an important game at the time though so we were all on edge looking at everything super critically

Shueys sprint up the guts and Yeos up the boundary gave me the mega chubs. Neither finished very well at all, unfortunately, but its so good to see! We arent as slow as everyone said, just need a gap in the traffic.

Ball movement >>> pace

Geelong's mids bar Ablett weren't super quick , Hawk's mids bar Hill and Smith aren't super quick - pace is overrated, how you quickly you move the ball be it by hand like Geelong during their reign or by foot ala Hawthorn is much much more important.
