Review Positives and Negatives vs Sydney

Will give a more detailed analysis on the +/- later, but just wanted to say a big negative are the flogs in the crowd booing Goodes.

Have a bit of conviction and don't fall for what others have done, pretty pathetic really.
The booing was embarrassing. Fair enough if he had done something during the game to warrant it, but they guy is a champ and for the most part of his career has been amazing to watch. Hats off to Lewie Jetta as well- he was obviously pissed at the crowd and it would take some balls to send a message to 40,000 people.

He seems to be the only player in this team that just seems to not give a **** when the ball is there to be won or there is a need to contest.
I agree that he has a laconic/relaxed look about his game and certainly isn't renowned for his contested ball winning ability, but he went last week when he needed to against the Pies, and Swan hammered him to the ground. Possibly saved the game as they were getting a boner at that time and he was all that stood between two opponents and the goal.

I'm neutral about Hill overall. He could probably do with a break, perhaps for his shoulder (though really he shouldn't need it as playing yesterday was a sign that it was ok, even if not 100%). So long as Newman (or McGinnity :p) puts pressure on up forward as well as trying to score.

Goodes did nothing today to deserve booing. I've not seen him do anything bad against us.
He is entitled to be offended by any racist abuse and to comment when he is offended.
Will that large number of players that booed him today boo Hodge for his mongrel act striking Swallow?
I think the Eagles crowd looked bad today. The Dockers who we used to put down are looking more refined than us now-a-days.

Dodger, look at the second qtr ten minutes in just before their first goal. Dead set push in the back. Think its schofield (one of our fairest players, Darling got a free or half the push schofield got). I Can't really blame goodes, but the crowd saw it and they could, and they did. The fox commentators were not calling it. That cheeky way or cheating way to get a goal (their first) should be called out, he gets away with it, thats a criticism of the umps, just like what boomer did to Priddis.

+ves for the game.
We out pressured Sydney in the midfield and then sent them to the cleaners, all before half time. Gotta to love that. thats improvement
Our team game is good, very good. Our coaching staff is very good (lock them in long term). Browny noted they were the youngest coaching team.
When we don't get a clearance from a ruck contest, watching Nic Nat take on the whole opposition midfield is dead set inspirational. He is that bit of magic needed for finals.
top spot is ours for the taking. we just have to beat the Orks and the Purple. Bring it on.
Isn't it turning out to be a great year for the supporters. Loving it.
Hill is playing injured, give him a rest next week, he deserves it
Sheed & Sinclar, it is great to see them take the game on.
Wining the last qrtr after being challenged. Watchout freo we are coming for you.

the passing into the forward fifty is not lace out. (but it is a little bit harder when the whole opp team plays in our forward fifty)
Not being able to bring back the Duggs this year.
Slacking off in the third. (probably a combination of Sydney lifting)

+ We beat them in the midfield, something we haven't done in years. Our development through there has been amazing this year.
+ Barrass, his game was sensational for a KPD. Very rarely will you see a kid of his age debut in in a key position and hold up as well. You also need to consider there was only Schofield as the other recognised key back helping him out. Normally you'd have another 2 experienced KPD's telling him what to do throughout the day. This kid is going to be a gun.

- The booing of Goodes. I get it, it's a bit of fun by the most part but it's getting a bit old and is a real bad look for the game. I was embarrassed for the club yesterday.

+ Beating the Swans - finally
+ Sitting 3 wins and a massive % gap above 5th
+ Winning the contested footy
+ Better goal kicking accuracy
+ Defence and web stood up prouder than a honeymooner's old fella
+ Keeping the Swans to 1 goal in first half
+ Good debut from Barrass - not the finished article yet but showed enough
+ Sinclair had a step up game - loved his marking in the forward line and he can kick - hopefully it has only been a problem between his ears
+ Yeo and the way he takes on the game, especially those towering marks
+ The AFL making the academy teams pay fairer value - Heeney at pick 18 was a steal and Mills this year is meant to be better
+ Stopping the flow in the last quarter (took a little longer than hoped but it was stopped).
+ One less week before McGovern is back

- Don't get or like the Goodes booing. Don't like him but booing was not right
- Hill has looked disinterested for a month now and I suspect he needs a rest
- Hutchings is not up to AFL standard. He epitomises vanilla and slow. Got lots of it and I would be leading the turnover assists count. He works as a sub because the pace is out of the game when he arrives
- Selwood's confidence - it is shot. Couple of times when he got the ball in the forward line he looked out of sorts.
- A centre clearance line up of a winning ruckman (take your pick) feeding to Priddis, Selwood and Hutchings. Back to the bad old days.
- Chamberlain umpiring - our forwards have to find a way to cope because they are not getting protection. Needing them both to hand it back - give away a free or two and even get Sinclair in to run through their opponent
- Running out of big man stocks with McInnes limping off for EP
- McGinnity judged BOG for EP meaning Selwood and Hutchings are probably/hopefully safe
- Would of liked to see Newman selected instead of Hill

+ Barass debut and looking good for a first game KP
+ Being in a position to rest players towards a finals campaign
+ One step closer to stitching up a 1/2 position on the ladder
+ Sheppard, Wellingham <--- surely no one predicted how good these guys are going to be this season
+ My man Sinclair, love the giant 12 yr old. I really hope he is kicking 72 shots at goal every week though for practice!

- Jetta is probably going to Fremantle now
- Crowd

Positives:
- Midfield ferocity was massive. Not something you see a lot of from our lot.
- Darling and Kennedy aren't in harmony yet, but they're already causing massive headaches for defensive units.
- Cripps, Sheed and Sheppard: weirdly unsung in how much they've come along. Very impressive. Thought that was probably the best Shepp has ever played for us.
- All Australian selectors could justifiably consider Nicnat for a midfield position.
- Barrass put in a pretty solid debut for mine.
- We've found a way to utilise Priddis' strengths and minimise his weaknesses. Props to the midfield coaching team for the ideas, and even bigger props to Pridda for the discipline.
- The response to the fade out was good. That's a rearguard we'll need come September.
- Sinclair's game yesterday showed so much character. Hard not to like him as a bloke after that goal.

Negatives:
- Thought our handballs went back a step yesterday. A few too many times the ball ended up at feet.
- The fade out in the third/fourth was thoroughly average. Understand why, but still not good enough.
- It felt like Masten had a disproportionate number of clangers / out on the full. A rare blemish for him this season.

Pos : winning and going 2 games clear of 4th spot
Naitanui and Sinclair combo is really developing
Yeo is returning to his comparisons to Fyfe form

Neg :
Playing Hill who passed a fitness test but still looked to be carrying that shoulder injury .

- The booing of Goodes. I get it, it's a bit of fun by the most part but it's getting a bit old and is a real bad look for the game. I was embarrassed for the club yesterday.
This.

Though I believe we in a democratic society shouldn't be told what to do or say (which seems to be a long-lost ideal in this PC world), so long as no one is directly vilified and abused, booing Goodes is just getting so passe now.

I do not believe it is because he is Aboriginal, so booing him is not akin to vilification.

But time to move on from it, Eagles crowd. I feel the same way when our crowd boos Watson; although he was a cheating campaigner who allowed stacks of injections into his body after signing a dodgy confidentiality agreement while his thighs grew to resemble tree trunks during that ridiculous supplements regimen, booing one player just fosters the martyrdom/hero complex (so brave) while making our crowd look bad.

+
4 points
Our ruck pair
Midfield work
Barrass on debut - solid
Reclaiming game momentum in the fourth quarter
Gaff
Priddis (and those around him) have worked out how to use Priddis' strengths and collectively cover his deficiencies

-
Rosa, Hill, Masten and Hutchings - all seemed meh yesterday.
Selwood - a deer in headlights yesterday when he came on.
Forward line has 'lost its mojo' in recent weeks.

-ve Masten trying to kick on his left foot when he can use his right; he is no Shuey for skill; good player when he plays within his limitations and strengths not when he thinks he is better than he actually is
Hutchings - looked very ordinary, poor ball handling etc., I thought Selwood might actually be better until Selwood came on and I was jolted back to reality
Selwood appears to have no tricks when caught in close, okay at times as part of a handball chain

Jetta showing Simpson that like his great friend and mentor Adam Goodes he's a good player but not a team player, more interested in what's going on over the other side of the fence than giving his team-mates a hundred percent effort. Pass. Freo can have him.
How does Jetta standing up for a teammate show that he's not a team player?

Goodes did nothing today to deserve booing. I've not seen him do anything bad against us.

People don't boos goods because of racism or because he did something bad. They boo him because they simply don't like him. The main reason as far as I can gather is because of tall poppy syndrome. He comes across as having this very "holier than thou" attitude as if he's better than everyone else. Whether or not that attitude is justified doesn't really matter, people tend to hate that kinda thing.

There's a rather large number of posts here listing our forward line as a negative. "Lost its mojo", "delivery no good", "Darling and Kennedy not meshing" etc. We just kicked 15 goals against a team which routinely had their entire 18 in our forward 50. We had 10 goals between Darling, Kennedy Lecras and Cripps. Really not sure what more people are expecting...

Positives
-
Sheppard. I can't even recall him losing a contest this year. If it wasn't for the likes of Priddis, Gaff, Cripps having great seasons, I think he'd be right up there for our BF. Sorely underrated.
- Sinclair. Took some great marks, provided a contest at rucks and down forward... what more can you ask for? Hope Lycett enjoys his 4 year WAFL deal.
- Team defense. The entire team had a great game, our midfield and defenders just work so hard both ways to help out down back.
- Priddis was amazing, I'd dare say one of his best games for the club.
- Hutchings worked hard, you can tell he wants to be best 22 and for mine he moved past Selwood today.
- Selwood, for the impact he had, was good. Can't squeeze him in yet, though.
- 5th debutant in Barrass. Obv looked a bit caught out at times, but he was more than serviceable.
- Nic Nat firming for Goldy's AA spot.

Negatives
- Hill wasn't great, a few dropped marks and errors. If Newman came in this week I'd be okay with it, but I'd probably still want Hill come finals.
- Taking the foot off in the 3rd and 4th. Sydney are a quality team and had some good periods of dominance, but they scored too many goals from it. I'd like to see the side be able to contain that dominance, as Sydney did to us in the 2nd. Repeat entries and possession is fine as long as it doesn't affect the scoreboard. If we let Hawks/Freo do that to us they'll just pile on 5 goals.

Positives:
Apart from those already listed. I didn't mind S Selwood's game as the sub. It was the best he's looked all season IMO
Hurn is playing great footy at the moment
Barass leading the backline in the last quarter of his first ever game

Negatives: Our defensive structures broke down in the second half a couple of times
