R2: Changes vs. Essendon

Absolutely.

And let's be honest - the beauty is now he is our 3rd best key forward. There wouldn't be too many 3rd tall defenders at opposition clubs that would want to be matched up 1 on 1 with Tex.
Actually loved the way Tex played on Sunday

He’s pushing high up and giving Fog and TT opportunities closer to goal and when he gets the ball he’s trying to bring others into the game

If he was gassed it was prob just due to the amount of work he did getting up and back

When he was dominant in 2023 he was having pings at goal from everywhere and he’s playing a completely different style of game now and so he should be , he’s such a smart player he knows what he’s doing

Agree. The good thing is that we match up pretty well against them.

2022 - 4 point loss
2023 - 18 point loss
2024 - 3 point loss, 2 point win.

Our team will be a hell of a lot better than the last time we played them:

2024 Outs: Dowling, Berry, Taylor, Smith, Murphy, Nank, Cook, Bond, Himmelburg, Butts

2025 Ins: Draper, ANB, Peatling, Curtin, Cumming, Rankine, Worrell, Crouch, Milera, Keane

They will be without best 22 players Langford, Wright, Guelfi, Laverde, Parish, Ridley and Cox.

I have a nagging feeling we get a dominant win against the Bombers followed by a crashing devastated upset by North at home in week 3.

Geeez. Rule out finals if we lose to North at home.

I reckon we beat Essendon and North easily

As we normally play them at Marvel, I wondered why we are playing them at the G this year.

For some reason every year they play one MCG game against a non vic opponent except for 2019 where they got 60k!! to a Sydney game and 48k for Brisbane.

2024 Freo 34k
2023 Port 38k
2022 Sydney 43k
2021 Sydney NA
2019 Brisbane 48k and Sydney 60k

You would think as the non Vic club which draws the highest crowd numbers we would be the likely candidate to play them there every year. Perhaps they saw 34k against Freo and got worried

We absolutely packed out Marvel last year. Might have something to do with it. I am out of town for this clash and very sad to be missing it.

Boys will be better for a run on the MCG. Has looked slippery recently. Hope they pack a pair of boots with longer studs. Gotta keep your feet against Merrett and Kako.

I was looking at the crowd numbers and it was 36k last year for the Marvel game on a Friday night (6k Crows supporters surely) and the 2023 game it was 39k on a Sunday afternoon.

MM will probably get the Kako job I hope.

Horses for courses.

Defense lacking KPD's with Ripley out and Langford not able to swing back (also out).

Curtin back in. Don't mind Bond in for Merrett, but find a different magnet to swap

Our midfield should be good enough to win on its own merits without needing to bring in a specialist hard tagger.

I'd just play Peatling on him

Start Draper!

Wasted opportunity last week not seeing what he could do.

If he struggles and need to sub him, so be it, but he needs the chance to show he belongs.
He will start this week

And bonus is he will be super fresh on the big deck

Don’t mind his management so far , especially given the pars defect in his spine that they need to monitor

Exactly - bringing Bond in to tag him
means we get less midfield time out of Peatling , Rankine etc

Peatling has excellent defensive skills , let him wear out Merrett then at other times we put someone offensive on him to wear him out some more the other way

Interesting. It was a struggle for me and my mates to get there in time for the bounce. Was it a 7pm start? Regardless looked a solid crowd from where I was sitting (top level above the goals).

Still think there will be a good turnout at the G.

Yep, or Ben Keays can also do a job if required.

TBH I actually like Keays as a negator, cause he can do a surprising amount of damage offensively and still get the job done. Nothing worse then watching your tagger kick 2 goals.

Won't work... the sub is not meant to be used for player management of 1 player... meant to be used to cover for early injuries and it's pretty rare that we don't get injuries throughout the season. Not too mention it severely restricts options to adapt to games.

Has anyone kept an eye on the Essendon board? They are very confident they will win this weekend. Already a foregone conclusion which is the polar opposite of ours. Strange how fans rate their teams.
To be fair we have been so crap for so long that they probably haven’t realised the overhaul our team has had. And they’ve owned us when playing them in Vic recently.

Which is great - hopefully their players take the game for granted too.

Love the Tex

Whilst there are changes I'd like to see for the overall progression of the squad (Nank, Taylor, Pedlar, Dowling, Bond etc), I'd not be making any changes to the 23 this week. We had an excellent warm up against an undermanned opponent to blow out the cobwebs. Nobody did anything egregiously wrong enough to warrant dropping. I'd like Sid to get a full game, but not at the expense of Curtin. I'm fine with Sid being handled with kid gloves given his load management during the preseason.

What I do want this year (and should be a non-negotiable for a serious team) is selection integrity and accountability. For the first time in a long time, we have quality depth across all lines and guys who should be playing senior football playing in the SANFL. If KPI's are not being met? Dropped. Shit attitude? Dropped. Better matchups available? Dropped.

We should be putting the best team possible on the field each week to beat the opposition in front of them. No golden more tickets!
