We shouldn't be relying on injuries to beat opposition sides.
We want to be tested against their best line-up.

Relying on and taking advantage of are two different things. If it moves a 50-50 game to 60-40 our way we'll take it and run.

We're going to have injuries at some point. We might lose a game or two because Dawson or Rankine are injured. It's only fair to make hay while the sun shines for us.

It's like when people say "We only won because the opposition missed/shit the bed/lost a player/etc". Who cares. The 4 points count the same. We're not England, moral victories aren't worth any more points.

This!

If all Tex can do these days is provide a CHF style linking role that nets him 3 kicks, 2 marks and 7 Hb then i think the games gone past him. The harsh reality is we want to push our best younger players into this team and I am not sure absorbing Tex into a mediocre half cocked role best serves us because that kills our flexibility and if we are relying on subbing him then he is cooked.

Tex will take the best or second best defender most weeks still - the weeks he doesn’t then that’s when we should go to him more. I wouldn’t take too much out of the Saints game - they were pretty poor, we dominated centre clearance - and Tex played further up the ground.

We need to make a good finals run this year and Tex will win us games along the way

I just hope we can provide entertainment for the crowd this week, that's all that really matters at the end of the day. It'll feel like a win regardless then!

The Saints also conceded their highest score under Ross in this 2nd stint as coach and had access to most of their first choice defenders (a strength of theirs). Kicking a big score like that against the Saints is a good sign, regardless of their outs in the forwardline (who they struggle to kick big scores with anyway).

I've always believed in the old saying, when everyone else is Zigging, good coaches Zag. And our current 4 tall forward line-up looks like a serious zag for most defenses to cover. At minimum they will need 3 KPD's in their line-up, and most teams simply don't have a 195cm Josh Worrell to pick up the slack.

I think this week is the perfect game to see how effective the 4 talls can be. I keep looking at Essendon's defense and simply don't see how they plan to cover it given their injuries. It feels like there will be a matchup nightmare for the don's on one of the 4 at all times. If our coaches are smart, they will identify it early, and instruct the mids to go at it relentlessly. Even if they switch out, there should be a Essendon KPD who is about to have their worst game as an AFL player.

A bit concerned with our forward structure. The good sides will find a way to exploit that lack of mobility, especially in the wet.

Curtin worked his way into the game when he started playing further up the ground. Tex looked like one tall too many even in dry conditions.

We'll go in unchanged though.

It's been my concern the last 3 years! Although this time there have been a few differences...

It didn't look like there were too many times all 3 were on at the same time, so we're weren't incredibly tall at every forward entry. That being said, Tex looks to be in good shape, and has been laying tackles, so people aren't running past him like a training cone. Is obviously doing great ruck work in F50 too.

We also have a much better F50 Defensive pressure & presence this year, with a raft of smaller players floating through there. Peating, ANB, Rankine, Rachele, Soligo all up there with Pressure Acts and tackles.

They beat us in stoppage clearances, which resulted in them getting only 7 less Inside 50's for the game, with scores generally reflecting the fact they were lacking in KPF's and quality of supply.

Overall fantastic game, crazy scoring percentage for I50's but definitely areas to tidy up.

Sounded like they're happy with where he's at, and doing things they're looking for even though those things don't fill up the stat sheets.
Oh so like the Matthew Wright/Jared Petrenko/Ned McHenry/Lachlan Murphy intangible, non-statisical role?

Only with 100000000x more talent in his big toe alone.

I can get around that

100%, If we are going to give a dude time in a "non statistical role" I would far prefer to give it to a 197cm pick 6 thats cut out of marble, has great skills and can play nearly every position on the ground.

For what its worth, I genuinely don't think people will describe his impact as non statistical for much longer.

Different players of course but speaking of low stats for talented individuals, Cyril Rioli averaged 15 touches and 1.5 goals a game for his entire career and people hail him as an all time great
