AFL Toast Rnd 3: 18 point win against the Demons

I am saying hooker hasn't played any footy this year and Ambrose should keep his spot next week. I'm scared about 6,6,6 rule with Hooker back and slow

New rule is to encourage more contested marks, Hooker’s one of the best in the league.

Yes, he showed his class with ball in hand many times and that pace he’s got is electrifying.

Just want to see a little bit more of that mongrelised aggression that Smith possesses.

Maybe I’m asking too much.

But in a new environment 3 games in playing for a Melbourne club I think he’s getting comfortable with it all now.

Good times ahead watching him go at it in bomber colours.
I think you are wanting Shiel to be a style of player that he just isn’t.

Yeah I don't see Shiel as a guy who plays with physical aggression. I think he's capable but he isn't that player. His class with the ball is interesting because he only went with something like 51% efficiency; in hindsight maybe the passes he did nail were high quality and his on-field presence was accented by his pace. When he did have the ball he always looked like he was going to damage Melbourne.

Fully agree with this.

Of course I am delighted to win so it's not a complaint per se, but...that game did have a bit of a feel of two poor to middling sides having a reckless shootout about it.
The win felt great.

But we always win the shootouts. I want to see a win against a team that doesn’t give us that kind of space before I’ll believe we’re back on track.

‘Team defence’ was the offseason mantra that had me optimistic that we could contend. So, in that respect we are miles off. I’m also surprised that one of our players said it was good that we put in a 4 qtr performance. In what world do we consider our second qtr performance acceptable? It was awful. We can’t afford to go to sleep like that if we want to contend.

Quite sure it was Raz who said that and he is one of the new leaders. Someone needs to correct that message in front of the playing group because that second quarter simply showed the same old habits. That, together with the last 8 or 9 minutes of the game, was rubbishy.

Shiel was excellent last night. He has slotted in this this side very well. He brings very good intensity across the 4 quarters which this team needs. You can tell he's switched on from the start. A real professional.

It's a very even comp, you can't ask for the side to be on top for all 4 quarters, there will be times the opp gets the better of you. You can ask for the side to put in and follow the team plan for 4 quarters which they did.

That 2nd quarter didn't go our way, but we created a lot of quality opportunities for ourselves, but unlike the other quarters we consistently missed our forward entries. Which strangely coincided precisely with Smith being off for 20 and us being down 2 rotations. They did slow the play later in the quarter, although they probably should have sooner.

Finally got around to watching the game.

Its hard to say whether this was two teams exposing each others weaknesses, or both clubs switched on their seasons and got back to their late 2018 form....and the extra quarter it took Melbourne stung them in the end.

Positive - we scored freely. ran freely and the effort and pressure was there. tackles stuck. harassed the ball at contests. got a little unsociable with their hard nuts.
Kicking straight when we got our chances also helped.
Heppell has become our barometer. Which is good for your captain. When he puts that level of game in, the team follows. And we generally play well. If he is to remain the best choice for captain, that level of effort is a non-negotiable.
Shiel, Fantasia, Parish, Zaka, McGrath through the middle looked very dangerous.

Negative - we let a rather impotent melbourne kick 112 on us. T-Mac a non-factor. So their goals largely came from smalls. Which has long been our achilles heel.
We kicked 130 on an undermanned backline. O-Mac and Frost are not a good defensive pairing.
the 2nd quarter. Leads like that can end a game. especially if you consolidate them into half time then come out and put it to bed in the 3rd. Our 1st & 3rd quarter need to be the standard. The 2nd should not happen.
Ruck. Ill cede Gawn is one of the best in the league. But Clarke and TBC may well be the worst ruck setup in the comp. It's something we need to address fairly quickly. Mobility and an ability to be an extra midfielder (esp with how much we want to use our big man in the link up play) will be crucial to cracking the top 4 in this comp. Priority 1 at seasons end has to be a #1 ruck.

Atrocities
Umpiring. I would be livid as a supporter losing that game. Amateur hour from all the umps. Clear HTB's not called. A touched play on call was paid a mark. Soft marking infringements paid but front on contacts not.
What could have been a great friday night of football (esp for two 0-2 teams) was marred by the umpires.

Commentary. I'm a fan of BT and JB as a duo. They are dynamic together and i think JB is a good ying to BT's yang.
Carey and Ling are terrible. Time has come for the networks to piss of these ex-players who add nothing but mindless droning (and a little bias i might add).

you guys definitely deserved the win. We are so out of sorts right now. I'm clearly biased but geez the umps were shocking. I reckon stringer had 3 goals from incorrect decisions and gawn getting called for nothing and even a kicking in danger when no-one in sight. And then frost should've been pinged for holding the ball but it wasnt called only to blatantly throw it and umps not see it either, like wtf!

Am I only one who thinks the Gawn free was there? He ran past ball and pushed Bellchambers which isn't allowed in centre bounces.

Ruck contests are generally horribly officiated though at least from my interpretations of the rules.

Also one of the slowest and the new rule opens up space

In the middle of the ground at centre bounces usually, then play is back to normal.

If anything 666 can crowd forward lines more as previous years some teams would start with 4-5 up forward and extra 1-2 around centre square. If anything think most agree the new rules make KPP even more valuable.

No one in sight?

Get your eyes tested.

How often is a team going to kick 18.4 from 22 shots (pretty much league avg for rds 1-2)?

I was so impressed with Parish. His fast hands were Misiti-like. He’s a good player, too often criticised for mine. Shows endeavour, guts, skills and determination. Makes our best team for mine.
When played in position and putting in the effort he did on Friday there is no doubt in my mind he should be in our best 22.
