I posted this before the Collingwood game and was pretty much right except for the players mentioned. It's always the fear when you lose a couple through injury. The rest fall like dominoes. Let's hope our luck turns right now. We couldn't have had an unluckier start to the year. :(

Yet in the first qtr of 666 played this year our almost full strength defence gave up 1 point.... yep injuries have nothing to do with it. Seriously though losing our general in Rance was going to create havoc. The other injuries just compound this. It’s going to be a crappy next month. Hopefully we can snatch a win or 2.
Remember Sydney were 0-6 in 2017 and we pushing top 4 at the end of that season. There’s a long road ahead, and 666 ain’t going anywhere especially while Geelong keep winning.

First game first quarter against the blues and in that game for two quarters we were struggling

Rance is a once in a generation player and with inexperienced players back now we are getting smacked on the rebound

Seriously findlayson would not get a kick with Houli Broad Short Grimes Rance and astbury.. but the point I am making is our midfield turnovers because our load on Cotch and Martin is too much and we look slow.

After Collingwood last year we needed bigger body mids, but we are too small and getting found out

So next week we could be without: Cotchin, Short, Riewoldt, Rance, Caddy, Houli (injured) and Dusty (Suspended).

There is bad luck but wow. :drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:
Don’t forget our premiership Ruckman Shaun Grigg!

Now that I've had time to reflect on last night it is quite evident that this side without it's core stars is at best an 8th to 12th side. My main gripes with the performances over the last 2 weeks is on the defensive end. There were countless times yesterday where we looked flat footed. Whether it's a fitness or mental application issue I don't know but we've given more space to opposition in the past 3 weeks then we did in 2 years. Our skills have never been great (even in our premiership and minor premiership years) so when our manic pressure is down we're left blokes who mostly plod. Running both ways used to be a formality for us. Now we don't know if we're going to get it.

I don't want to be that guy who bags premiership players as I feel that it's so easy to forget what some of these guys have done when you're having a bad spell but fair criticism to blokes like Brandon Ellis and Dan Butler who know what it takes to deliver on the big stage but are dishing up meek performances week after week.

I feel the plight of Brandon Ellis in particular is a sad one now, he looks like the shell of a footballer he was 2 years ago. Almost every time he gets it, it gets coughed up or he hears footsteps, feeling out of favour with the best 22 wouldn't sit right on anyone's shoulders and I hope he can come out of this slump but he is almost looking worse the more he plays.

On Butler - I've said it before but a player as limited as him cannot go away from what actually makes him so good. Tackling, rushing opponents, making them feel unsafe whenever the ball is in the area. The goals will come as they did when the ball is bobbling up there so often.

Castagna - See above.

Markov is not up to it at AFL level. Looks great at VFL level when you might get that extra yard of space but the attention to detail at AFL level is far superior and Markov cannot find that space. If he's not running with the footy he's not offering much else in any other aspect of the game.

Just on the positive last night. If we can keep Sydney Stack on the right track we've unearthed an unreal talent. Would love to see him spend more time in the middle.
There were numerous times last night when we got the ball on transition the players were clueless as to how to get inside 50. One occasion I think Sheds gave a one metre handball to Lambert who kicked around the corner to a contest inside 50, my question is why the need to handball if the intention was to bomb it into 50 anyway.

They seem to be making it up as they go whereas the last two seasons every player seemed to know exactly their role, they must be trying different things and either it isn't sinking in or they just don't understand it.

I understand that with changes to the side it takes time to gel but I can't see any particular style of play we are attempting other than the crab style that the Bombers used early last season and were heavily criticised for.

I don't think he is doing it on purpose dude.

I guess when you take on that contract you take on the expectation of performance. And to be fair to the rest of list he absolutely should be living up to it. The one thing going for him is he’s capable of doing it. No one should be feeling sorry for him though.

We don't know what's going on with him outside of footy though.

We're playing poorly, fumbling, too many passengers, lots of injuries but we're playing Port - who would have to be the biggest bunch of pretenders to take to the field. If Carlton can get close they we are with more than a shot.

As the dust settles on our defeat by one of our traditional rivals, the GWS Giants, it appears that throwing in the towel is the overriding reaction by this board.
I guess that being one game and percentage out of the eight and only nineteen games to play makes it mathematically impossible to play finals.
Yes, we are right up against it with Rance and Reiwoldt out and Cotchin and Martin likely to join them, Short and possibly Rioli as well.
Yesterday we lost to a very good side at their home ground and although we fell away late we were in the game for a while, that indicates to me that the effort, generally, is there. The skill execution is not.
I will always have a place in my heart for Dan Butler, Brandon Ellis, George Castagna and Jack Graham because they helped deliver a Richmond premiership when I thought that I'd never see one again in my lifetime.
That, of course, doesn't mean that they are exempt from criticism, dropping, trading or delisting, however, they should be free from vilification and calls to "ruin their lives" because they are out of form or past it.
Some positives from yesterday were, Sydney Stack, this kid has what it takes, Tom Lynch, shit service and kicked four while still underdone, Balta got some valuable experience and a few like Higgins, Astbury, Vlaustin and Graham can't play much worse.
Special mention to KMac who has elevated his game.
Hopefully, Cotch isn't too bad and Caddy, Grigg and Houli are back soon.
Port over there are a tough ask, not unbeatable if we show more resilience than this board!

Funny game. only reason it wasn't close as for the first 3 quarters and a bit was they kicked straight and we didn't. But then we were smashed in the last 20 minutes.

GWS did to us what Collingwood did - strategy wise. We played much better, but still not good. Dusty sucked. Watching him live from 30 meters away he moves OK, but just looks totally out of sorts. Lynch was good, but our small forwards weren't. Except Higgins.

Our movement into the forward 50 is awful. Kick and hope. Something so very wrong with our midfield.

Anyway Sydney Stack was great - after his first possession. Balta much better.

In some ways I hope Dusty is out next week. He needs to restart himself. Our intercept marking was poor (Might just be missing Rance and I think Vlas was marked), and our rebound was OK until we were forward of the center, then it was awful.

Reboot required. Teams have worked out how to beat us. It requires high skill levels and good running. But it is straightforward.

This season could actually be a blessing in disguise.
We get a good draft pick and are forced to see what some of our kids can do and get some games into them.
Geelong missed finals a few years back and have bounced back.

Yeah, opportunity comes from crisis.

Some posters seem to think the 2020 year is a very good draft year to potentially. If we go well in the draft in 2019 and pick up a few in 2020 on top of our 2018 draft and our gun youngsters we could be looking very strong in the years ahead!!!

Given we have locked Martin and Lynch in for the years ahead, amongst others, not the worst scenario. If the players look after their bodies for the long term could work out quite well.

The above 'side' is what is currently available from what was arguably our best 22 at the end of last season. Missing from that side are: Cotchin Riewoldt Rance Houli Grigg Short Caddy* & Conca^. Those 8 players combine for 1517 games of experience and them missing has meant that we've had to turn to a combination of experienced and inexperienced players to replace them in Lynch(134) Ellis(155) Weller(123) Markov(17) Garthwaite(3) Balta(2) & Stack(1)

Now this isn't using injuries as an excuse because every side cops them, but how many have lose such a key number of their best 22 at the same time, even when Collingwood had all their injuries last year, how many of them were of the same sort of calibre that we're currently missing. It's not just them missing that impacts it's also making others step into different roles that they aren't really familiar with.

Of those missing all but Rance and Conca will be back at some time this season, although Short may end up missing if he needs his elbow reconstructed and then they do come back we will definitely play better than we currently are. But as has been mentioned by myself and others, we now have an opportunity to put some development into a few of the younger kids on the list and see what they have got. We also have the chance to play a couple of fringe players who have been around for a while and yet to prove themselves.

So it's not all doom and gloom just yet as there is plenty to gain from the season this year.

Please tell me Conca is NOT coming back!!!

I think some may start to realise how important he was to the make up of our side given his ability to play through the middle or down back.

when we win the flag this year it's gonna be the greatest flag of all time

- #tigeshaveinjuries 10x worse than colonwood's last year
- entire AFL media against us
- every single neutral fan against us
- rules designed to "bring richmond back to the pack" as well as make Geelol unbeatable
- umps against us even worse than the last 2 years
- CEO of the sport against us
- dusty suspended all year for beating up his taggers
- prelim gastro part 2
- kingsley as midfield coach
- caracella moving to drugs in round 9
- prestia late out on gf day
- umps and the AFL carrying our only contender #pieshaveinjuries and their giant seppo through the entire year
- gerard wankley trying to have us excluded from the finals when he can't handle the fact we somehow finished 6th
- whatever I'm missing

He wouldn’t be making any difference at the moment IMO. He’s not a play maker in any way which is what we’re missing.

This thread is about who we can bring into increase the depth of our midfield for this year. Recruiting 2 or 3 kids this year does not do that and claiming that it has increased our depth as many have is farcical.
Not as farcical as hanging onto C graders that were proven not capable of stepping up. We had to invest in. Ids capable of being A grade talent , not in wildest dreams would have we imagined drawing on all at once with our best 4 ALL out of the side by r4
