The only baffling part is that we have only been willing to invest such lowly draft assets to try and find talent to replace one of our biggest needs, which is quality young talls. If we hadn't used those picks on talls i would have been pulling my last clumps of hair out
We also used our highest draft pick in years on Gibcus who is a tall
Still plenty to play out in that regard

I did watch the VFL last season and in the early season was outstanding in the backline until injury and perhaps an eye on the draft curtailed the rest of the season. He has considerable upside with his speed and athleticism and with more confidence should develop into an attacking intercepting defender as we have seen with both Grimes and Broad, remember he has played only a handful of games at senior level and had almost no exposure to Aussie rules until the last four years. He has displayed a great capacity to learn quickly and from comments made by the coaching staff is a willing learner. These are the types all good clubs are built on , some of the best most consistent players are those that build gradually and experience hard times and not necessarily ready made from day one. I for one value these players as these are the guys that are prepared to sacrifice themselves for the club and provide the one percenters unlike the Dusty types who are the finishers and accept the accolades
That’s fair but is he playing one’s if Gibcus doesn’t go down in the preseason or is he seen as a grimes replacement

Time for one of Baker and Rioli to move forward now that Broad is back.

Rioli isn’t going anywhere IMHO. Bakes is an old school utility - can play back and forward and we use him as needed. It’s his one wood

Mate if anything from what you said we have not improved from last year. Last year we were even closer to winning games this year we are crumbling earlier. There has been zero improvement. We are still giving up chances to win with s**t kicking and choices. That's the truth. No sugar coating

That’s right. And is it a coincidence that we’ve slumped to the bottom of the ladder while one of our former assistants is coaching a club at the top of the ladder?

That all works in theory but in practice Miller wasn’t doing any of those things in the first 3 qtrs so it’s not like he would of just started to do it in the 4th either

Miller was a non factor for the entire game and it may not of worked out but at least the coaching group had the balls to try something because we would of lost either way
Maybe I was seeing things but it appeared to my untrained eye that we were breaking even while miller was competing , he was better at holing his feet particularly around the ground ,,,in 4q Grundy dead set monstered Ryan and imho was the catalyst for them rolling us

Yeah but we have been insanely spoilt to always have Richo or Riewoldt be our Key forward for the last 30 years straight. It was a brilliant transition between the 2 and i don't feel like we are there yet. Ryan is looking more promising since he had a haircut, but not sure his ceiling is the 10+ year focal point we are used to. Lynch is becoming more and more injury prone as well which is going to make success impossible if it continues to be the case for the remainder of his career. I think the lack of consistency with the fwd line-up due to regular injuries to Dusty, Lynch & Jack - Boltons hot/cold form & Dimma's mind f-ing of dropping Cumberland to teach him some sort of valuable life lesson, despite him clearly looking like the only forward who is playing with serious intent consistently.

The fwd line has lacked a solid identity since Chol left really. He has been more missed than people want to admit. He was excellent at impacting instantly when being called upon and did good work around the ground and would definitely be helping our ruck stocks. He was always undervalued and when he left lots tried to shrug it off - but he was a real loss, especially with the back up ruck stuff. I hate seeing Noah in the ruck, not just because i feel he is quite average in that role - but i can see it leading to an injury eventually. He is quite a clumsy player and the idea of him charging in knee vs knee with guys like Gawn, Nic Nat etc. Thank god Toby plays for us as i would scream in terror watching them 2 ruck against each other.

Ya'll hate me saying it but i am going to keep saying it - the only logical move to be doing now to try to desperately keep us relevant, especially with MRJ injured now - is Dan to move back forward and see how it looks. They have already missed the real opportunity of pairing the 2 x Rioli's together, but trying him forward now is not even a debate - it just needs to happen.

I dont see how how the prospect of having Dan be the spiritual leader to a small forward set-up for MRJ, Cumberland & rotating Dusty/Bolton - alongside Lynch & Jack/Ryan..... that forwardline looks so deadly and can hurt you in 1000 ways. I know Dan has been great downback, but as a team it has not lead to wins. We have depth down back coming back & he is the most obvious player who can play a secondary role at a possibly elite level.

Seeing Dan Rioli as a pressure forward with this added maturity, leadership and defensive understanding really makes my bean twitch. He could legit turn it all around in a second.

And we got sucked in to send Balta into the ruck. I guess Dimma had to make a move but it just exposed us down back. Rolled the dice didn’t come off. Maybe a better option was sending Miller back and Balta into the ruck. Spilt milk under the bridge now

Frustrating loss but I was the first time this year we actually looked like a team. We made lots of mistakes but there was no period where it looked like we literally forgot how to play football.

We'll see over the next few games, but there seemed to be a lot of attitude difference? Can't remember any undisciplined frees, wasn't much talking and arrogance towards the opposition and the effort was there from everyone.
Looked like we put our heads down and just played rather than getting sucked in by the opposition.
I thought a real plus is that we went in with a diff plan to beat melb than last few times when they walloped us and with an undermanned side , some better kicking for goal than the shite dished up , we could have ruddy well won it

Miller may of been holding his feet but he wasn’t stopping Gawn or Grundy either (Ryan was in the same boat) but the difference was that Ryan was still proving some impact and taking marks and getting his hands on the ball

Miller wasn’t at all, he took one mark for the entire game and barely touched it in general play

Here are the wacky balls to wall the seasons over changes I think we need to make and if by the grace of god we make the final 8 I think these will put us in good stead.

Out: Prestia, Miller, Rioli
In: Bauer, Ross, Sonsie

It is only a matter of time before Prestia gets injured mid game. He is playing like shite at the moment and honestly I can't see him serving us beyond say 2024. It would be better to see if we can pump a full "Pseudo Preseason" into him and get him fully cherry ripe for the post bye attack at the season. Ross on the other hand, is playing exceptionally well in the 2s and we need to show that we will reward the form. If he is off to the saints at the end of the year then at present he is a 4th rounder. Really nothing to lose if we can up his value on exposed form.

Bauer is playing well enough that he should be given the option of the 2nd forward. Taking double digit marks is worth rewarding.

Now here is my crazy move. Have use Ryan as we used Nank in 2017 and make KMac the Grigg of 17. He is slightly taller and the same frame and he could possibly work the same way.
I like your ideas but with slightly different angles. For team balance we need to drop Cotchin. With Cotchin playing Dusty is not getting any midfield time. Dusty was at his best when he starts in the midfield and drifts forward Playing him as a permanent forward doesn’t seem to create the same chaos. To protect Prestia use him in the Kane Lambert role switching with Dusty when Dusty drifts forward Much as I love Cotchin he is the one to be saved for an emergency backup

Your read on the situation could be right, we’ll never know had Miller stayed on would the result have been different?

But how often have we heard Dimma sprook the fact we are a process driven team. If we are down a player then someone else steps into the role. The issue was that our whole system suffered once Miller was subbed. We lost our structure because there wasn’t another tall to step into the role.

I have an interesting question.
Without Hopper and Taranto, it's probably fair to say we'd be battling it out for the spoon this year.

Based on what we have seen this year, what would people prefer if you could turn back time.
  1. We ignore Taranto and Hopper, invest in the draft and potentially be in the mix for Harley Reid
  2. We stick with Taranto and Hopper
I'm a big Taranto advocate.
I'm a big Hopper advocate.
Currently though, I can't make a call either way.

If we chose to invest in the draft, we may not have been in the mix again for at least another 5 years.
However, based on what I am seeing, we still may be 3+ years away from legitimately challenging again.

Plus going to the draft would impact on our ability to lure big fish via trade/free agency.

It's an interesting topic.

hopper and tarantula

nothing worse than full rebuilds and totally bottoming out. just means you're shit for 5 or 6 years with no guarantee of anything after that. rather try do something in the next few years and get some more players in by trade and develop the young blokes at the same time

Vlaustin isn’t getting dropped
Don’t think Kmac or Miller will be either

Despite my criticism of Millers game it’s pretty clear we need him to play in the ruck and next week will be no different unless Soldo comes back

Probably Broad for MJR (Clarke off the wing and into the forward line)
Ross potentially for Mansell

Maybe Sonsie sub but they may also want to give him some mins in the vfl
