Review Round 1, 2023 vs Brisbane

Reasons we won:

1. Dixon actually ****ing having a preseason this year as opposed to last year when he played only 11 games. 10 marks for 3.3.
2. Rioli putting in a better performance than a fading Robbie Gray who was finding it hard to get up for games in his last year.
3. Marshall continuing his good form from last year. 4.1.
4. Horne-Francis actually being worth the two first round picks we paid for him (and then some).
5. Wines playing his role and getting the ball out with hands to guys like Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis to deliver the ball.
6. Lycett had 26 hitouts with 9 to advantage compared to McInerney's 33 hitouts with 5 to advantage - you wanted to focus on HTA, well Lycett dominated him.
7. Bergman slotting into the hole filled by Amon without missing a beat. Bergman had 8 score involvements during the game.
8. Horne-Francis, Rozee and Butters our best players for delivering the ball being our three highest players for inside 50.
9. Aliir and McKenzie not getting injured this game as opposed to the last time we played Brisbane when we were all over them.
10. The fact that we only turned the ball over 52 times compared to Brisbane's 66.
11. 9 tackles inside 50 to 6.
12. Rioli, Powell-Pepper, Jones and Fantasia combining for 56 forward half pressure acts.
13. Rozee, Butters, Bergman, Wines, Horne-Francis, Drew and Duursma combining for 57 forward half pressure acts.
14. Dixon, Marshall and Georgiades combining for 20 forward half pressure acts.

Given that none of our midfield, barring Wines, have been playing for HALF a decade, that's not much of a comeback. Are you suggesting that Rozee and Butters haven't blown any clutch moments except for today's first round of the season? lol. How well did they play against the Bulldogs? Or Richmond?

Besides, arguably, the Bulldogs prelim, name the clutch moments Boak has blown?
Was it 2021 vs WB aged 33? 24 disposals, 10 contested,5 clearances, 4 tackles. Of course if he had played his best game ever we would have won so maybe that is it.
2020 vs Richmond aged 32? Most clearances, most CP, 20 possessions (third) played in a shortened game in attrocious conditions
2017 vs WCE playing as a half forward ? Most clearances, 25 possessions (third), 6 tackles, 10 Score involvements
2014 v Hawthorn? Most possessions (33), 17 contested (most), 7 tackles, 6 clearances and a goal
2013? v Geelong? 26 possessions, 10 contested (2), 5 tackles, 5 clearances (most) rucking to Matthew Lobbe our only ruckman
2007 vs Geelong? As an 18 yo in his first year he blew a clutch moment. Had he not, we would have overcome a 117 point deficit! This must be it!!!

This rubbish that you and others come up with about Boak blowing clutch moments throughout his career is just laughable. Those are just the finals we lost. In all those games there are many more players who were far more responsible than him for ending our finals runs.
Hartletts hand pass out of bounds was my all time fave

Best:
Alliir, Burton, JHF, Bergmann, Rioli, Houston.

Fairly good:
SPP, Marshall, Dixon, Butters, Rozee, McKenzie, Jones, Duursma.

On thin ice:
MG, DBJ, Jonas, Fantasia, Lycett.

Rest were serviceable.

Oh. And what was that appalling coaching in the 2nd quarter? Having Jones and Drew trying to make a ontest in the ruck with 6ft 10 inch McInierney?? FFS !!!

And a couple of premierships.
Great clubman but reminds me a lot of Danny Rowe from the movie the club, only difference being Danny could hold down a back pocket
Which premierships? The ones where his kicking cost us a grand final? Are you referring to 2007 again? Lol. More realistically we wouldn't have got as far as we did without him.

Hatlett's out of bounds hand pass was pretty ordinary

The Boak stuff is ridiculous. He's finished top 2 in the B&F the last 4 years. Yeah the young guys looked good today but it was round one, a nice dry track, up against an opposition that didn't fire a shot. It's a long season, there will be injuries, things will get tougher. Boak will still play a big role.

And the best performance by a Port ruckman in a couple of years.

My observation is the lack of North supporters here making judgements on JHF.

Leading forwards, amazing to see.

I think people being disillusioned with Hinkley still being here regardless of this round 1 are valid. There would have to be a small exception that want us to lose to regardless, enjoyable win, but it’s been 11 long years with no guarantee how the season will play out. I hope Hinkley leaves this year as a premiership coach. Either way please go.

No, 2013, 2020.
Bit like showdown 1 2020.

So we would have beaten Hawthorn and Sydney in 2013? Blame the whole team for having a snooze against Geelong after half time.

Go back and look at our score? 40 points. A lot of players missed golden opportunities on that day. Robbie Gray's DE was 52% and he kicked a point.

I'm not saying his kicking is great. It's average. But that has never been his core value to the team, just like it has never been our Brownlow medalist's, or even Tredrea's sacrilege as that is.

He is an elite clearance, contested possession, tacking, possession accumulating midfielder who brings others into the game and is skilled enough to be, perhaps until very recently, the midfielder the opposition most like to stop. In a game and a season that is about not just skill but endurance he is still one of the fittest players we have who has not notably slowed down reflexively or across the ground and whose preparation probably has a lot to do with his also elite durability and lack of injury.

This is also why he should never have been played as a high half forward.

Apologies for the intrusion.

Just wanted to say, how bloody good was JHF?!? Awesome performance.

You've got a good one ladies & gentlemen, the kid is a gun.

With him, Butters, Rozee, Marshall, Duursma etc you've got a damn bright future, and when you're on you're electric to watch.

Enjoy it!

All the best for the year, KG

I'm excited about Burton. Our best lock down, versatile defender who is skilled enough and now fit enough to run and be damaging up the ground. I'm looking forward to what he can produce provided he stays fit. He is a smooth mover who this year already looks to be our most damaging rebounding defender. Hopefully in this form he can take some pressure of our undersized key defenders.

He is also easy on the eyes which ok doesn't mean much in football but can't hurt right?

This is like when ya pick up a root.. and cos ya drunk ya blow in her... It feels good at the time... But then ya realise ya stuck with the baby mama (ken) for the next 18 years 🥺🥺🥺🥺
I don't say this enough but you are by far the best poster here

Brown, Huddo and Lyon work really well as a team in my view- informed intelligent commentating and excitement without the BS fluff that you get from (say) a Brayshaw/BT team.

And it's great to watch a game without hearing what private Melbourne college certain players went to. Fecked if I know when that became a must have feature of footy commentating.

Ricciuto offers nothing but an earworm. Not offensive but just not relevant.
In a relative sense I agree with this (ie its a far better combo compared to other commentary teams right now), but Browny did get mighty cringe at times with his bias. When the best commentators are going you shouldn't even know who they support because they call the game right down the line.

My observation is the lack of North supporters here making judgements on JHF.
Back when they were in full ****** mode when the trade period was happening I remember pointing out to them that the trade was fair given the situation and both teams would win out of it.

Its clear in hindsight that was correct. Sheezel and Wardlaw will be stars for them, and they'll get further reinforcements with another first rounder next year that they can build around.

I'd guess that some of them might finally be actually growing up a little.
