You've gotta temper everything with the reality of round 1. 40% of the eventual premiers lose round 1, so it's the sort of round that doesn't mean a whole heap.

But

Wow.

Where did that last half come from.

We were so dominant in the early parts of the game but all the ball control seemed to go nowhere, we fumbled and bumbled forward and gave ourselves limited and poor chances at best. Then suddenly in the 3rd, probably mainly on the back of JHF, we were penetrating with our touches, getting over the defence, finding holes in a forward line that hadn't had time to become cluttered. It was an outstanding period of play. The Lions gave up in the last, so that was junk time, but that 3rd was insanely good.

Aliir Aliir was incredible. That was as good as he's ever played for us. They rotated a heap of players through him but couldn't curtail him. He was amazing in the air but if it wasn't him McKenzie was also starring.

When he wasn't doing it in the air. Farrell, Houston, Burton were simply sensational off half back.

Then on the wings, Bergman and Duursma were absolutely sublime. Duursma has had some critics, but he was at his line breaking best and Bergman was strong and composed other than a hiccup or two.

Then you have the midfield who were fantastic. Rozee just sensational at creating space and tearing the opposition to shreds. JHF just showing exactly what we all dream of in the 3rd. Butters and Drew doing their jobs too.

Up forward Marshall continued where he left off and Dixon was back to his best, though off target.

And Rioli! What a debut. His pressure, the little blocked handballs, the intercepts, the touches, the dropped mark and the sensational goal! All of it, he was brilliant.

There's still a lot of upside too. Wines was poor, Georgiades is just looking down, Jonas & DBJ continue to be meh, Fantasia was quiet and Jones kicked 3 despite seemingly being completely confused in his mixed up role.

Lots to love, but its round 1. The first half was the same old concerns, but that 3rd quarter was sensational. Let's hope it is a sign of things to come.

Hahah, I’m Powell-Peppers biggest fan, and have the posting history to prove it.

The question was where would Boak play.

The answer is he will play a similar role to SPP pressure forward rotating through midfield.

Hopefully he’ll not play at all until fully fit, and even then to cover the inevitable injuries and niggles.

Pick 45 in the 2016 Rookie Draft.

I know there have been some great rookie draft stories of previous years but Dan Houston has to be one of the best.

Literally gets better every season and if he played in Victoria, would be more widely appreciated. 19 touches at 95%, wow.

Could easily be our next captain.

That was a very good game. I had a feeling that we would surprise in round 1 but I didn’t think it would be that dominant. It really could’ve been much more than 54 points too. We still have our issues in front of goal but the dominance all over the ground meant that it didn’t cost us.

Most were concerned with how our young midfield would go against the seasoned lions but we whooped them in the middle. It was very nice to see JHF debut like that, with Rozee, butters and wines contributing well. It’s a good mix.

Back 6 was a concern leading into the game too and I thought they all worked very well together and won that battle easily too.

It’s only round 1 but we’ve got a good team with some great young players, hopefully this gives them some confidence.

I’m with you, SPP is a dead set lock in our team.

He is a rough diamond of which we’ve always known. He had a great game yesterday and doesn’t get a stat for all his body work.

If Boak is a straight in, someone like Lachie Jones is on the block unfortunately.

Good problem to have!

The Lions looked inside mid heavy to me and we killed them on the outside, will be interesting to see how that midfield evolves this year.

The coming week’s performance against Collingwood becomes very interesting now. Was yesterday just about us playing emotionally in response to pre-season criticism, a loud home crowd and two exciting debutants?

Or, is this coaching and playing group about to really surprise us and do something different from what we’ve seen from them in about 8 years.

The type of performance we produced yesterday felt like those exciting wins in early 2014. I don’t think either 2020 or 2021 contained such breath-taking, energetic, polished footy as that.

Agreed.

Hinkley as a player was a polished and attacking back flanker so not sure why he ever deviated from his natural instinct!

How can you stuff up the front page that badly.

Deliberate?
Just one game but maybe now we have our line coaches in the right positions.
Thst midfield😍

Just on this ^ first up Slyce put in yesterday and was definitely up for it (feeling some pressure?) but did anyone else notice our midfield

using long h/balls to free up our trademark congestion. Trusting our runners to win possession and be in space to hit targets I50?

What a welcome change to NOT see Wines n Boak scatter-gun hail mary balls forward.

Whether it's Carr's influence or just players with better disposal it's long overdue.

Playing on more often is another long overdue factor. Sheesh at this rate we might develop into an organised footy team.

On duursma, while his outside running was back to his best, he also seemed to have the power and strength to get through tacklers. Might be a pay off to the strength gains he had last preseason. He is a formidable player at his best.

Just watched the replay. Funny how different things can look on screen. Couple of observations:
1. Apart form that sh*thouse effort on Ashcroft, DBJ was pretty good all in all
2. It seems like sometimes the “slow it down” message comes from the sidelines and generally everyone is on board with it except Zak Butters lol. Pretty great really
