Our kf and key back combined for 10 contested marks.

Without going back through history I’m going to guess that is a pretty rare feat.
No other team came close to it this weekend.

Our aerial dominance was something else.

We performed really exceptional, but in hindsight have we exposed why the excitement over brisbanes chances this year might be premature.

I too had them as around the pointy end after they strengthened their midfield but looking at them now, is that spine sans mcstay good enough? I don’t know that it is.

Looks right to be too, though burton could easily have gotten 8
Its a good number, but Wayne Carey holds the AFL record for most contested marks in a game at 10, on his own!

Eight players have taken nine in a game – Barry Hall, Matthew Richardson, Brad Ottens, Drew Petrie, Chad Cornes, Matthew Lloyd, Daniel Bradshaw and Aaron Naughton.

And 12 players have taken eight – Stewart Loewe, David Neitz, Nick Holland, Nathan Thompson, Travis Cloke, Rory Lobb, Mason Cox, Callum Sinclair, Jake Carlisle, Aaron Hamill and Max Gawn.

Then there are a heap of players at 7 per game. I daresay a team total of 10 marks in a game has been achieved in just about all of those games ... and more

Great win by the lads, our midfield is looking exciting for the next 5-10years. But it is only round 1- need to trump this win by knocking of the pies at the G.

Yeah I looked at those stats, enough to know a kf and kpd getting 10 wouldn’t happen often.

Dixon and Alir are two of the leading contested marking players in the league and this is the first time they’ve achieved that total.

Pretty good summation, and I agree on the confusion re Brisbane's game. Was it just an off day, or was it Port's intensity that won it? That was great to watch from a Port fan's perspective, but the majority of us are still waiting for Port to do this to the next three oppo teams before we get to too carried away.

The biggest takeaway from me was...
1] JHF .. just wow!
2] That youthful midfield mix is really worth getting excited about!
3] No injuries - We have a really healthy list
4] No one had a bad game yesterday - Everyone stood up and played their part.

Pretty much the only thing missing for me is a tall key-back. Damn Geelong for stalling the Ruttegolea trade! Maybe next year?
I think that ship has sailed, the Cats are playing him, meanwhile:
SANFL Vs North:
Quote: New draftee defender Tom Scully got his first taste of the big sticks after a terrific pack mark to convert.

And, another defender; Jake Pasini finished with 20 touches.

It sounds like Ollie has been told his limits and strengths and that we'd rather have guys like Rozee or Butters kicking it inside 50, and his job is to get it to those guys.
The same convsersation must be had with Mitch: he must be more selective and not try for mark-of-the-year each contest.
If he does not mark the ball he has no Plan-B he may become a casualty to get Finlaysen into the team as a forward/ruck.

I feel like Lycetts game has been over rated on here.

So many taps he seemed to either get beaten or hit it straight to the opposition.

I guess I don’t expect him to dominate with the taps, that’s never going to happen.
Thought he showed great intent and determination when the ball hit the deck. Unfortunately that’s all we can hope for now, unless Haynes comes good.

I feel the opposite. Came back from the game to see lots of derogatory comments here about his performance which I felt was harsh.

Was his first game back since round four 2022 and his contested work both in the ruck and around the ground definitely had an impact on clearances, especially in that second half.

Definitely room for improvement but impressive return.

I was thinking about the game yesterday and felt that their was a shift in the way the boys were coached. I felt that I saw the finger prints of Josh Carr and even the DNA of Choco in the way the team is coming together.

Choco was always about allowing the talented players to come to the fore. It was to his downfall because he saw blue chip players as role players and lesser in the eys of the superstars. I think other coaches like Clarckson were the ones that tempered his flaws and allowed us to build towards out maiden premeirship.

While we only have one small sample size (the Brisbane match) I felt that we used the strenghts of our players much better. If the ball is in the hands of Ollie Wines or Travis Boak the forward entry isn't going to be as effective. I love Wines because every team needs that midfield bull but he demanded the ball way too much and was inefficient. I think this is what Josh Carr may have meant that his midfield was trying new things.

The clubs best ball users seem to be around the football. Conner Rozee is just so damaging and has a penetrating kick. Both he and Horne Francis are able to run at pace and punch the ball in deep without making it easy to spoil. Butters isn't as penetrating but is smart with his ball use and can find the shorter target or kick it to an attacking position.

Dan Houston is another great user of the pill and seems to be running out of the backline and kicking long. A long kick doesn't have to be bombing it in long. It is also finding one of the high forwards or mids that have fond space. They are going long but not in a predictable way. Great to watch. The same can be said about Ryan Burton. He is just one rung below the kicking standard of Houston

The next player is Bergmann. He is a youngster who is just coming of age. He seems to be courageous with his ball use, runs hard, and can also be trusted to run, carry, and deliver. I think he will get better but I'm excited about how he will go tis year. Kane Farrel seems to be able to play on the wing or halfback sometimes but we know what he can do with his disposal. Another player that can be used in a variety of roles and has a good skill set.

Lachie Jones lacks polish but his size and huge kick makes him dangerous. The fact that he can play so many positions makes him a great utility. I think he needed to stay away from the backline until he finds his feet. He makes too many mistakes and this could hurt his confidence. He lacks a footy brain but he is young and will click into gear once the game slows down for him and he is less rushed.

Finnally, the last but not leat player to be mentioned is Trent mcKenzie. He played really well against Brisbane and can launch a ball a mile. Allir Allir is another player who doesn't have to kick the ball long to be attacking.

DBJ, SPP, Boak, Wines, Jonas and Drew all have their stregths but good coaching means that they are used in a way that compliments their strengths.

Hopefully things gel and the team grows into a top 4 unit. The question is wether it is good enoiugh to stand up to all the other teams...

Just makes you so *en happy when you win a game like this and it’s on the backs of the young guys like Rozee, Butters, JHF, Duursma, Bergman, Drew etc. midfield work.
Yep... and Josh Carr?

There were a few things we did differently in the middle. A hungry Lycett being able to jump helped.

I watched the replay on the AFL website.

My number one take out of the game is exactly what Power freak 2008 said. It is almost like we saw the same game in the same way.

Either after 10 seasons Ken Hinkley has completely changed his coaching philosophies and basically become a good coach or Josh Carr is actually ghost coaching the team.

The stand out for me was overall structure, players knew what the game plan was, the players believed in the game plan, the players were used in accordance with their strengths, players knew where to go and knew where their team mates were and most importantly, they played four quarters and never really looked flustered or downhillish. In fact, the overall attitude and positive play was unbelieveable. We actually knocked the sails out of them in the third and they never recovered.

The most obvious changes in coaching were:

We seemed to use handballs and tap ons to find open players.
We tried to use our best kicks for inside 50s.
For the most part, our forwards lead.
We were about quick ball movement but we had a few gears and would take the wings if we had to.
There was a lot of match up changes during the game.
A strength but also a humility to the players.
Individual brilliance without being cocky.
Playing and enjoying the game.

Horne-Francis was awesome. Individual brilliance many times. The best kick in the team. Hitting leads. Just a footballer. Didn't show his aerial prowess so can't wait for that one.
Rozee was brilliant and was a touch more outside which I liked.
Butters was obviously spectacular but very strong game. Super smart team player.
Aliir was great and it seems obvious he was playing injured last year.
As Power Freak 2008 said, McKenzie was great. I'm not a fan but he was excellent.
Bergman was awesome. Best piece of play - 2nd or 3rd. Gut running to touch the ball on the line. Inspiring play. He's in for a huge year and could make the centre square by the end of the year.
I thought Lachie Jones has good but has great potential in his role. A bit more bash and crash. He's in for a big year and will gain confidence.
Houston and Burton were both ridiculously good. To see both players running off half back and kicking to hit guys on the lead was awesome. Plus they were good in defence. They were both super exciting to watch.
I thought Byrne-Jones was good. Apart from the Ashcroft miss, he was good. Played with an edge early and almost took 2 players out early. Hit some guys on the lead a couple times. Good signs.
Rioli was awesome. He is just a great instinctual footballer. The mark and goal was great but he had some many quick handballs and plays that go unnoticed. He can do the spectacular but also the meat and potatoes.
Dixon was awesome. 50 metre penalties aside, instead of 3 guys draped over him, he lead well and marked brilliantly. He has been used poorly for a long time and finished with 3.3. A bit straighter and he could have kicked a bag. Excellent game.
Georgiades was similar to Dixon. Could have kicked a bag. He was in the right places and has to be persisted with. He will eventually break out. I've seen him kick beautifully for goal, he has it in him to be automatic.
Marshall was awesome. Such a smart player.
Powell-Pepper continued his form on from last year. Given more to do and go into the midfield. Brings toughness.
Wines had most disposals and did his job. Given some of the other guys, his kicking is not as good as the new guys in the midfield.
Duursma had a good game on the wing and will get better.
Lycett played manfully.
Jonas was not bad. Looked a tad slow.
Fantasia looked a bit rusty and can come good. He's got it in him.
Evans good in limited time.
Farrell was pretty good as well. Didn't notice him as much but had 21 possies.
Drew worked in and under and did his thing.

All I can conclude with is that we were lucky not to eviscerate the Lions. Our young midfield and players are looking volcanic hot. We played like a Port Adelaide team which I haven't seen in a while and kudos to whoever coached this new way and attitude and kudos to the boys who played four quarters.

The next game will be a huge clash at the G. I think the boys are up to it. The Pies are a hard running, four quarter team. Should be an awesome game.

I wouldn't get too carried away by game style. It's easy to play free flowing football on a beautiful day in March. Let's see how that all looks as the season goes on.
This, also Brisbane we're absolute traffic cones in the second half. When teams bring equivalent or greater pressure than us in the middle, that's always when we fall apart under Hinkley. Let's see how they go when the oppo show up.

yeah agreed and we had a glimpse of that in the 2nd quarter. they just overrun us.

I know the umps killed us but unless we start to learn to score when we dominate and hit targets as well.

i loved the result, i thought we would win, but I'm not sold that we have changed, the first half felt exactly like the last 10 years, complete domination with only a small lead, poor kicking for goal and then when the excitement and buzz settles and its based on game style we looked ordinary with our skill execution.

this week will tell us a lot, i don't expect us to win but i expect us to be competitive, and competitive for the whole game.

Does anyone remember what this tweet was?

Until we show up on a cold winters night in Stoke I am still firmly dubious as to our credentials.
