Just a great win.

I thought we’d ****ed it up but we some half decent umpiring in the 2nd half we blew them away, made them look soft and ordinary.

greta stuff, loved JHF though his 3rd quarter was just outstanding. Best 25 possie game I’ve seen.

been a crytic of lycett but that should Be his standard now.

burton, what a star, made the seagull look ordinary.

that’s the Charlie we want, leading and jumping at the footy, the kicks made it easier to do that. That was a true power forwards game.

junior, what a star he is, has the full bag of tricks.

a real team effort, it’s only one game but * me im excited if that’s what we bring each week.

as for the umps, they basically kept Brisbane in it, it was disgraceful, felt like 2 of the umps were learners. So many poor decisions followed by poorer decisions. Every game we cop it.

If they hadn’t been given a full-frontal rub’n’tug they would’ve been triple-figured

Butters and JHF I kind of expected. Just thought it would take more time given their pre-season prep.

The surprise for me was Marshall. Port players rarely have 2 good seasons in a row but he looks stronger again this year.

Bergman using his skills and vision more often. Really opened up the play.

Not impressed by DBJ or Jones. Only looked decent when the heat went out of the game.
Nah ... I thought DBJ had a very good game today. The only real "scream" moment was when he run in to bump Ashcroft, completely missed him, and allows an easy goal. That should have been a "smash the kid into the turf" tackle, but was just a pathetic effort. But from then on he was very solid.

The other player I go on record to apologise to for ripping the innards out of him, is Lycett. He had a top game. In fact the moment he came off, and Jones (of all people) began to ruck, they got on top and looked like running away with the game. Clearly need Finlayson back in as soon as he is fit.

A good strong win in the end sparked by JHF, so much like Buckley imo. I will reserve my opinions until I see us play Collingwood at the G.

i still assume we're shit, but i'm gonna celebrate a good ****ing win because there's been so little to celebrate in the last 8 years

Very good first win against a team that’s expected to make the gf, and against a set of umpires that wanted to do us in.

I mean to be 21-6 at ht at home is insane.

If you show the final free kick count to anyone and the scores, and they would swear that the hometown team that was the better team for 85% and outright globetrotting for 50 of the game was the team with twice the free kicks at 25-12… not the other way around.

It would surprise no port fan that the umps were heading towards breaking a free differential record that (of ****ing course) port already own before one can assume the umps got the call to dial it back because the fix isn’t meant to be that obvious.

Then we did what we have to do, which Is be 400% better than our opponent just so we can keep the umps out of the contest.

First the bad - our key backline still looks like a massive weakness. Troubled when brisbane got a bit of a run on, and reliant on the medium guys like burton and Houston to really chop out.

Our backline (read Alir) looks great when we’re well on top and our midfield is really pressuring the opponents into no look dump kicks down alirs throat.

Ruck - lycett started very slowly, mcinerny, a bog average ruck was well on top early days and lycett just clawed that back a bit as the game went on. Lycett won’t get that opportunity against an actual good ruck.

- wtf is Hinkley thinking putting jones into the ruck. No surprise brisbane started to do some damage in that period.

The good

- after a Rocky-ish start our forward line looked much more effective than it has in years.

Has to largely be in part to the new-ish and outright new additions to our midfield in jhf and Bergman. Both are absolute gun users going forward. Add to thst rozee and butters and it’s a huge step up from the days of past midfield users.

Trent McKenzie not getting enough credit for mine.

So much to think about on the back of that. My thoughts:

1. JHF is better than our wildest dreams. He is beyond anything I'd considered possible. Not just his actual skill, but the way he lifts those around him. Seems to work in perfect combination with Rozee, but also gifted MG a goal for the confidence lift. The only question on him I think right now is his fitness/injury; was scary to see him clutch his hammy in the fourth.

2. Rioli was also brilliant. I think someone mentioned on here that in the past 9 seasons, 7 of the premiers have had a Rioli in the side. There's a reason for it, and he is our best small forward right now.

3. Life after Boak looks good. You look at how our midfield functioned, and its difficult to see who comes out for Boaky. That's something I never thought I'd say a few weeks back. He'll still be in the team because he just has to be, but if he does retire at the end of the year I'll feel pretty comfortable about it.

4. Duurs and AA are back to their very best after long recent form slumps. Especially Duurs. Something's happened for him in the off-season and he is back to the gut-running, classy beast he was early on and he made life a nightmare for Brisbane. Maybe Amon going was the incentive he needed. The challenge for him is to stay at that level now.

5. On the evidence of tonight, Ken has to go at the end of this season. Not because I'm going to rag on him and say "sack Hinkley", but because the midfield looked more dynamic and structured tonight than we have maybe since 2014, while also being tough as nails. In short, they played like Josh Carr. Carr is looking like a great get and if this keeps up, we can't afford for him to get poached. Needs to be made head coach at year end.

There are a few negatives - the umpiring which I still say looked very clearly like there was money involved that was cashed out at half time as the decisions completely changed in the second half, there are players that were clearly not at the level that others needed to cover, but I'll ignore them for now.

Think we kicked goals after the siren in 3 of the four quarters.
I like this plan much better than the traditional "concede goals in the last 30 seconds" game plan.
