Autopsy Round 2, 2023: Positives and Negatives vs GWS

I really thought Williams made a huge improvement this week. Flagged in the second half but we needed him to step up and he did. Promising signs.

TK...showed us his premium value. Really set the tone and got the momentum heading our way early.

Not gonna bang on the negatives.

We are very soft on transition. Hopefully we can show progress here over the coming weeks.

Gaffy. You make me sad

Did everyone not see what GWS did to Adelaide last week? They ran right over the top- and have players that can kick quick goals. To be grumpy about a few late goals is just being petty at this point, to be honest.

To hold them off was a good result and hopefully gives us some confidence going into next week.

Cracked the ton, but more importantly was the way we scored- fast ball movement, forward handballing and repeat inside 50’s.

Positives

JJ. What a star.
Liam Ryan.
Snake Waterman. Phenominal!
Hunt!
The gameplan being stuck with - using movement. So much better than the kick mark kick stop start.
Ginbey's efforts
Noah Long

Improvements
Bailey Williams.
Campbell Chesser

Negatives
Barrass / McGovern. Barrass especially. Must be battling a major niggle, so sluggish. Reminds me of the Darren Glass groin injury season, the laboured movement
Andrew Gaff. Just.... no. A good clubman who just has gone too long. Not being able to kick 40 on goal? Ooooh. Not good
Set shots. Still missing a lot of gettables. Darling, Cripps, Gaff the main culprits.

You’re kidding. McGovern was fine….Barass has had 2 shockers in a row
McGovern (unlike him, tbf) spilled and misread heaps of high balls today. Made numerous errors.

Thought he was poor. But Barrass was worse, looked mildly disinterested for the most part.

Positives:

  • We won a game of football at last!
  • Great response after last week's disappointing loss to the Team Freo Couldn't Beat
  • Ball movement, run from behind, taking the game on - fantastic to see
  • Waterman four goals
  • Jones excellent
  • SPS good, some great use of the footy
  • Ginbey and Long backed up well from last week
  • Liam Ryan
  • Two of Bailey Williams' last three AFL games have actually been quite good
  • Cripps, particularly in the second quarter
  • Tim Kelly playing at the level he is capable of
  • The Darling tap to Cripps for a goal from near the boundary - champagne footy
  • No apparent injuries
  • Ahead of Freo and Geelong on the ladder (even if only briefly)
I watched every minute of the Eagles' 2022 season so I couldn't be bothered thinking about negatives right now.

A win! - What a difference a week in footy makes!
We're 9th on the ladder -not sure if that's a good thing or not? ((;
Anyway, some good signs and heading in the right direction.
Can't be bothered with any negatives.
With Freo -2, it sets up the Derby-Darby to be a cracker.

We really do look better with only one of them in the side as an intercept marker, but both are too good not to play. It's a good dilemma, I guess?

Jesus *, we might have to listen to the song...

  • I got to watch a game of footy, and wasnt working!
  • waves, and especially tsunamis are blue, not orange.
  • SPS, Jones, TK's first quarter especially, Long may he reign, and time to HUNT! god some of the quick hands hitting targets made gaff look extra worse
when he cant hit a 2m handball or a 5m kick.

- I had the offer to go the the game with parents. :( last home game i went to see was the JK god richmond game, woulda been a pretty special combo.
- I dint put the mozz on us when i said oh no, we might have to hear the song!

Bailey Williams played a good game. Didn't win the battle but was at least competitive and had patches where he was dominant. Need more of this and less of the crap he's been dishing out
Yeah, he was actually ok today, at least competed with Flynn. He's a strange one, has the tools to make a good player just seems to play like a guy who's new to the game. Which I don't think he is.

Positives
Thought Ginbey and Long were very impressive.
Williams as solo ruck was impressive although Flynn is a developing ruck too.
Waterman played his best game for a long time.
Won the contested possessions and the clearances.
Thought Kelly, Sheed and Shuey really stepped up and showed the way for the young fellas.
Hunt was exceptional as well as Jones.
That 2nd quarter was exactly how we want to play.
Negatives
Accuracy in the last quarter was poor.
Not much else maybe faded in the 2nd half.
