Positives +

  • Jones rebounding and attack on the ball.
  • SPS clean with ball and made the right decisions.
  • Improved contested ball game.
  • Improved clearance game.
  • Tim Kelly winning clearances and started strongly.
  • Waterman giving us an extra target and competing well in the ruck. Kicked well for goal and provided us options especially when leading. Operates best when leading.
  • Hunt kicked some nice goals and used his speed to help with the attacking chains.
  • Ginbey what a beast. Leading tackler for the club and his attack at the footy near the end was awesome with his clean pickup. He goes hard at the ball. Looking forward for more of him.
  • Long very clean with ball and tackled strongly. Used the ball nicely and presented well. Also worked hard defensively. Nice set ups to Cripps.
  • Shuey used the ball well as always and played well. Good game from the skipper.
  • Ryan's delivery was sublime and marked well too. Showed more defensive effort than last week.
  • Hewitt in the limited game time has impressed me with his intent. More game time will greatly help. I can see him becoming the best player in this draft soon.
  • Cripps was great with his efforts and could've kicked five.
  • Pressure as a club was excellent when we were on top.
  • Darling presented well and rucked decently, that tap to Cripps was great. Took some strong grabs in the second half.
  • The god Govinator showing why he's the best intercept mark in the comp. Was in AA form last year before injury and will get AA if he keeps this up.
  • Duggan better with his attack and that bump was awesome to see over and over again.

Meh =

= Sheed was decent without dominating.
= Hurn defended decently and rebounded ok. Didn't look like his attacking self though since he doesn't go for risky kicks like he used to which is fine.
= Cole improved from last week. Pressured well pressing up.
= Allen still looks rusty and got outmarked by Taylor a few times but he made his chances count, could've had four though. Will get back to top form in a few weeks with more games.
= Witherden also defended well.
= Williams got beaten in the ruck but he was great early and made some good taps to Kelly and our mids. Competed with Flynn well. Luckily he wasn't up against Preuss otherwise Pruess would've smashed him (yep I highly rate Preuss). Just lacks game IQ.

Negatives -

  • Chesser doesn't look ready. Looks hesitant with ball in hand and doesn't accumulate enough. Needs games in the WAFL.
  • Barrass had a brain fade and didn't have the aerial impact. Also failed to keep Hogan quiet.
  • Gaff looks past his used by date. Too slow and kills momentum trying to get on the left when momentum would've continued if he stayed on his right. Just lost the ability to kick well in space like he used to. It's time for him to go to the WAFL and earn his spot back otherwise I would be putting him for a trade this year.
  • Still getting exposed against oppo's KPF's in the air at times when Gov and Barrass were occupied or are out of position. We were lucky that Hogan didn't kick seven. We need a third tall KPD such as Bazzo (if ready) or H.Edwards to allow Gov and Barrass to play with more freedom knowing they have someone tall who's marking the oppo's best KPF.
  • Tiredness at the end. Could be a problem when the margin is closer in future games if the other team still has something in the tank left.
  • Accuracy let us down at times.

Final Thoughts.

Great win from the club. They even numbers up the stoppages and all of a sudden the club got breaks out forward. We pressed high and risked out the back goals which is fine since we were keeping the ball in the forward line. Our pressure was great and we tackled better than in 2022. Still think we need a third KPD such as Bazzo or H.Edwards since other opposition KPFs tend to have a day out against us (see Larkey last week and we were lucky Hogan didn't kick seven).

Imagine the melts on the Freo board if we defeat them next week in the derby.

A lot of positives. Mainly in the run and carry department.

A freaking win!!

Jones, SPS, Hunt, Ryan, Cripps, Wateman were all fantastic. Kelly propelled the midfield, especially early.

Williams was serviceable in the ruck.

A few negatives too though.

We stopped running entirely in the last half.

Allen is as rusty as an old gate.

Barrass had an absolute mare.

Probably Gaffs telling moment was in the first quarter actually. Lloyd got away from him just too easily to set up Greene for their first.

Runs a mountain of work as normal, and perhaps pleasingly when he had it tended to look into the middle rather than wide. But if we want to play like we did today his role has to change I think. A high HFF Role, maybe.

Otherwise I think he gets overtaken sooner rather than later.

Ball movement was the best it has been in 12 months lots of risk taking, run and carry- got caught out the back a lot, but scored enough in the other direction to make it worthwhile. Forget the result, it was just exhilarating to see our HBFs get on their bikes, get the ball moving immediately, constantly be looking for the overlap run and actually give the forwards a chance.

Jermaine Jones had a legitimately excellent game, would love to see his metres gained stat. You can see that he, Hunt and Petrevski-Seton are the right players for this sort of gameplan.

Williams was still trash, but I liked that they finally bit the bullet and used a tall utility (Waterman) as the backup ruck- if you aren't going to win the knocks you can at least avoid compounding the issue by doubling down with two spud ruckmen.

He was lining up on the half forward line a fair bit in the first half.

Anyone able to make a gif of Duggan's bump?

Is it for an av? I’ll square it up

If you wait till tomorrow I can get a better quality one in full daylight.

One thing I thought was notable was that Longy had the courage to look for the best option a couple of times and not just handball to Sheed/ Gaff who were calling for the cheap 2m handball. Would have been easy for a second gamer to get sucked into that trap.
Longy is an absolute cracker. So glad the MC can see the light and is giving him a run.

Highly doubt we could trade Gaff. That ship sailed a couple of years ago.

Lots of positives, but Waterman’s leading patterns were fantastic today.

He did what Darling doesn’t do, separate and lead . Bloody hard to defend when you separate the defence. Neither JK or JD have done that in years. Lot to do with game plan though. If you move the ball quick and take the game on then forwards need to lead as we saw waterman do.

Positives:
  • Waterman outstanding, great solution as a second ruck
  • The speed and passing plays from Jones, Kelly, Hunt, SPS and co was fantastic. Positive signs of the new plan.
  • Speaking of, very happy with Hunt as a recruit. Looks like a good fit and a smart get.
  • Ryan continuing his good form
  • Long continues to impress, absolutely elite assists in the second
  • Ginbey solid again
  • Bailey not bad
  • Witho with some surprisingly good defensive work in some tough spots. Cole and Duggan with some great efforts too.

Negatives:
  • Allen good but still rusty, should have had a bag. Not much to worry about though
  • Not Barrass, Gov and Hurn's best games
  • Missed some gettable shots
  • Faded late but GWS were decent then too, and we were throwing the magnets around a bit (last two CBAs were Ginbey, Hewett, Sheed and Waterman I think) so not too concerned. Better to not have too much percentage if we're going to miss the eight 😉
