Carlton keeps focus on what's at stake against Essendon

CARLTON has stripped the emotion from the build-up to its MCG clash with arch rival Essendon.

Blues coach Brett Ratten has admitted putting too much emphasis on matches against traditional foes in the past and said Saturday's meeting with the Bombers - who have won six of the past seven games between the sides - was no more than a chance to secure Carlton's third win of the season.

"What we've identified over the last few years is the four points are there every week and if we try and change that and lift emotions above and beyond, it probably doesn't have the best of outcomes," Ratten said.

"If we stick to the process and get that right, the opportunity to win those four points is there."

HF: Garlett Waite Betts

FF: Hendo Hampson Thornton

OR

HF: Garlett Waite Collins

FF: Hendo Hampson Betts

It's difficult selections this week. In the end it comes down to a bit of a gamble I reckon.

Do you think that's too top heavy?? Could really stretch them for height. If we bomb it in to Hampson and then have Thornton/Hendo floating through in front to pluck the mark it could work. Walker is no good at contested marking and is a worse shot at goal than Thornton so don't really know what his value is (apart from being a superb athlete of course)...IF this is too top heavy, then I think Collins keeps his spot (unless someone like simmo plays forward) and moves to a flank and Eddie drops back into Thornton's position...None of the small-mid-sized guys that I want to bring in are natural forwards - Army, Ellard, Joseph (closest of the trio), which is why I think Collins should keep his spot or one of our mids move forward.

Hampson...what a dilemma...not playing well but almost has to be in the team this week due to the quality in ruck of the opposition...

I think both teams are going to be keeping a very close eye on the "emergencies" come Saturday. Won't be surprised to see late changes.

Clubs are usually conservative at the selection table, so while I can see 3 or 4 changes that I think would be beneficial, it's more likely to be one or two.

OUT: Carrots, Walker, Thornton/Collins, Duigan/Watson (depending on Bomber's selection)
IN: Army, Ellard, Bower, Hendo

If Bower doesn't come up, Duigan keeps his spot.

**Weather could play a part in selections too.

Think they'd be seriously looking at bringing in Lucas to generate even more run; might be tempted to bring in Lucas for Thornton.

What's the weather looking like - I thought they said chance of rain ??

Surely if its wet we'd play Lucas over Thornton ??

*boxing coach enters*

It's a bit 1980's innit?? I mean these lads should have enough testosterone and combative spirit that their arousal levels are about right.

If they thought maybe we needed a rev up due to the quality of the opposition then ok. But don't put it on TV to be the brunt of the jokes later on.

Yep. all it needed was Eye of the Tiger blazing on the dual cassette player in the background. :thumbsu::D

Funny thing is - that guys probably closer to being an AFL coach than James 'Bombers Puppet' Hird :):)

I don't see what was wrong with the boxing coach rev up - I actually thought it was good, he was fired up, it showed some passion and genuine anger.

Its the sort of thing you see in suburban football.

Do it again I say.
