As per tradition, the banter thread is back.

However, instead of juvenile jibes, we want quality discussion, the only difference being that Essendon posters can cast a critical eye over our prospects and our list, without being abused by the locals.

Any locals who can't handle this sort of thing, can continue to discuss the game on the official preview thread, which is opposition disrespect free.

Re: Round 3 Carlton vs Essendon Banter Thread

Good stuff, ODNs.
Let me/us know if any of our guys get out of line :thumbsu:

Over on our board we've gone with the usual "banter" type thread, so it'll be good to have the best of both worlds over the two boards.

Now, onto this weekend.

Can't wait. I'm hoping we get 70k+ at the G. Both bandwagons are up and about, and both are on the good side of the formline.

Question for you guys: How do you guys see your defence lining up?

We'll likely go in with a fairly tall forward line, albeit a nimble one still.

Hurley, Ryder, Hille (?), Crameri.
That's potentially four big bodied guys you're going to have to mind, though I'm guessing we'll rest Hille again.

Complimented by the likes of Monfries/Reimers, Davey, Jetta and Winderlich, we seem to have the perfect balance at the moment.

Am I right in saying something like this?:

Hurley: Watson
Ryder: Jamison
Crameri: Thornton
Monfries/Reimers: Russell
Jetta: Yarran
Davey: Laidler

I think it's highly likely that Thornton would be dropped for Henderson, and Bower in for either of Watson/Duigan. If Thornton keeps his spot, I think he will be played forward.

Bower only played 75% of the game for the Bullants on the weekend. Is it really wise to bring him back in when he's not 100% match fit against a forward line who is firing at the moment?

Re: Round 3 Carlton vs Essendon Banter Thread

this is the most excited I have been for a bombers blues game in a long time. Essendon have been brilliant so far, people like hocking and hardingham have shown excellent form compared to their form last year, and jobe has taken his game to another level, our mids have been challenged by Collingwood and held up but Essendon are another type of beast, like mark Robison said just pure grunt. We need to really attack the contest and be alert for the spread and the bombers open forward line that is where the game will be won and lost.

That's okay .... I can let them know. :)

I don't like Watson on Hurley. Jamison may be more likely with Bower matching up Ryder, I would think.
Russell on Crameri.
The rest look thereabout.

I still think you'll see Duigan down back, but not so Thronton.

Re: Round 3 Carlton vs Essendon Banter Thread

If Hendo is fit he HAS to play. As well as Emu, but only if he is 100%. Look at what happened last year when he was brought back to early.
I really hope they don't drop Duigan, I like the way he backs himself and has a red hot go. I would try to fit Armfield/Ellard in somewhere, we will need the pace these 2 provide. Also Gibbs has to play in the guts, not this tagging shit he did against the filth.

The Bombers are full of confidence at the moment (and righly so) so it's going to be a cracker of a game. Won't be much in it at the end but I think our mids are a bit better than theirs and I think this will be the difference.

Ratten would be crazy to put Watson on Hurley - just doesn't have the body strength to compete one on one. If he does play, he has to play on a medium type forward like Monfries.

I think we'll go in with 3 rucks on Saturday which means we could have a forward line of Hurley, Ryder, Hille (resting), wiith Crameri, Monfies, Jetta, Davey, Winderlich, Zaharakis all rotating through. Would be interesting if Hird employs a forward tag on Yarran or tries to exploit him the other way.

Think Fletcher will get Betts and maybe rotate Dempsey and McVeigh on Garlett. Hooker on Waite would be a given I think.

Midfield is difficult. Bombers will probably throw Hocking and Howlett at Judd but like Watson he is more or less untaggable when he plays inside. Key is to stop Judd getting handball receives as this is where he can be really damaging.

Simpson always gives us trouble too and is very damaging. Wouldn't mind seeing Stanton tried in a run with role and maybe get him the the other way occassionally as well.

The big question here is whether Essendon play 3 rucks as that really changes everything. They are all in form but whether it can work in this day and age is another matter.

I actually agree with Bower and Henderson back in. I'm by no means a Bower fan but he looked in good form on Saturday and really good shape. Seems to have bulked a lot in the upper body.

Lachie is ready, he's hungry to get a game and I think we'll be better for it. Thornton has been good so far but he might be the one to make way for him to come back in. I'm not sure who makes way for Bower though..

Me too Toad.
I doubt they will, but there seems to be many calls to see the back of him.

We must put time into our investments and from what we've seen of Duigan and Laidler I just don't see them being too far off from fitting into the mechanism.
Of course Bower has a lot to say with that, but a backline must work as a unit and for all that I know we have the stock that will make for a great fit, in Jamison, Bower, Russell, Duigan, Laidler, Yarran and Watson on the odd occasion or as needed.

Yes, we can bring back Daviesor Lucas down back or even throw Thornton down there again, but that would be a large step in the wrong direction for mine.
Let the unit develop and build.

You blokes might be forced to throw Waite back on Hurley - the options seem pretty thin for someone that can go body on body with him. And if you do that, you'd almost certainly have to give Henderson a game.

Maybe Watson goes to Ryder instead when he is forward (possibly permanent if Hird goes through with the idea of playing all three rucks).

Speaking of rucks, I think we've got it all over the Blues in this department. You will have to be careful you don't get smashed in the stoppages like the Saints were.

And how do you curtail Watson's influence? You could elect not to tag and back your own midfielders to have a greater influence, but historically that has gotten Carlton beat against us. I reckon you'll have to go with a heavy tag and pray it is able to hold him somewhat.

At least no Lovett this time around to cut you up.

But Monfries is still there, and he LOVES playing you blokes.

Bought my ticket today, fingers crossed, I reckon we can run you guys into the ground.

If we didn't throw Waite down back against Cloke and Dawes, we won't be making moves as significant as that to curtail Hurley's influence.

I'd back Jamison to beat Hurley in most one-on-one contests.

Maybe Watson goes to Ryder instead when he is forward (possibly permanent if Hird goes through with the idea of playing all three rucks).

We may choose to go with Bower on Ryder instead, if he returns for this match as I think he will.

I'd sooner have Watto on Hurley than I would on Ryder.

I'd be amazed if Curnow didn't go with Watson.

Curnow restricted Swan for 3/4 on Friday night. Whilst he may have run away with it in the 4th quarter, Curnow did as good a job on Swan for the first 3/4 of the game, as most have done over the past 2 seasons.

I reckon we can run you guys into the ground.

Of course you do - but you also thought you were better than us last season. ;)

Wouldn't be doing my job as an Essendon supporter if I didn't think we were in a permanent state of smash Carlton readiness...... :D

Pretty pissweak banter thread imo.

Needs more Essendon suck balls type calls.

was just thinking that myself! A lot of respect in here. It feels weird like french-kissing your grandma.

I was going to post that picture of that baby with the massive head and make fun of Watson saying it's his baby shot, but instead I might have to say what I really think, which is that he's an outstanding prospect.

*sigh* what's it all come to :(

Swan had 34 touches and 8 marks.

Define 'restrict'

I'd define it for you, but after that post I'm not all that confident in your ability to read.

Nor am I convinced that you saw the game on Friday night.

Swan had a field day in the 4th quarter, but was significantly down on his usual impact in the first 3 quarters - hence my statement that Curnow restricted him well for 3/4 of the game.

I don't have the stats, but from memory he had 13 of those 34 touches in the 4th quarter. 21 disposals in 3/4 is a good effort, but anyone that saw the game would be able to tell you that his influence on the game in the first three quarters minimal, and certainly well below the level of influence that we have come to expect from him.

Your stupidity is astounding - even for a banter thread.
