Autopsy Round 8, 2023 : Positives and Negatives vs Richmond

Positives -
  • We’re still well and truly in the picture for pick 1.
  • It’s given Richmond a renewed, but very temporary sense of self-belief.
  • The commentators didn’t disappoint, their focus was on what Richmond were or weren’t doing, and how a win could boost their chances of a form revival. Oh, and Dusty is…..well, Dusty.
Negatives -
  • O’Neill and Clark, if they were anymore outside they would have been running around in the car park.

I don't expect them to be stars, would have hoped one or two would prove themselves as future best 22 role players this season though which doesn't really look like happening
I wouldn't say no one there could be a role player for us. The thing is they aren't really able to be used as role players at the moment, we're requiring too much output from each of them when they're all in the 22.

Couple of short memories in here, darling is 6th in the most goals kicked of active afl players.

Likely to be 2nd or 3rd by the time he finishes up (dependent on when Hawkins retires and when Lynch passes him), has had a very very good career.
Which has absolutely nothing to do with today's positives and negatives

XON - pick 28
Trew - rookie
Foley - pick 31
Rotham - pick 37
West - mid season draft
Clark - pick 62

You cannot expect all of them to become star players.

Darling is far from our biggest worry, and like him or not he has actually proven he is at AFL level even if he is clearly far closer to the end than his prime. Besides, who else do you want to try in his place? Personally, I remember him for his third quarter in the 2018 GF and his All Australian the following year.

I think he’s a very lucky man that we have no other key forwards on our list and Jack Williams is injured , he’s playing like he knows there not gonna drop him he has been completely pathetic the last 2 years, he should be the one leading this forward line and he’s got Oscar there completely out playing him and leading the forwards it’s a disgrace. Would love us to pick Buller up and plonk him at full forward for the rest of the season and send Jack to play with the beagles at full back😂

I just don't think any of them have shown they're up to much of anything at AFL level. XON maybe but I'm not convinced

Positives -
Allen - a player to build a team around (along with Ginbey)
B Williams - has a heart and is slowly working out how to play football
Jones - has probably been our best player this year
Sheed - when attacking
Duggan - he is not a defender. So glad he was in the midfield.
West - practically played centre half forward, decent roving in the forward line

Negatives -
Culley's knee
Sheed - when defending. I've seen statues move faster.
Hurn's kicking. We don't have Nic Nat and Kennedy to help Darling mark those sort of dumps down the line.
Gaff - should probably be paying back his match fee.
Darling - the kicks to him certainly didn't help, but he is also in the 'pay back his match fee' brigade. Has to keep playing though to protect Allen.
Trew - had a chance to play a decent chunk of footy. Barely impacted a contest.
Edwards & Foley - were they even playing?
Clark - finished well, but was awful
Petch - isn't he supposed to be the forward who puts pressure on? Probably need to chase to do that.

There are so many players that should be not be playing AFL (O'Neill, Edwards, Foley, Petch, Clark, Trew, probably Rotham, now Gaff as well). At least this year they are being shown up as list cloggers and we can move them all on. Unfortunately, they will have no value to any other club and just have to be delisted. This is going to be a very long year.

He's playing like he's injured and trying to help out the team because there is no one else.

Expected when you've had the second best defender on you your whole career.

This was kinda difficult to watch. Simpson was flat as a tack right from the outset when asked about Culley - clearly they’re fearing the worst and this one has hit hard as you’d expect

Asked about it (him being flat) Simpson expressed his disappointment at the Culley injury and “apologised” for not jumping out of his skin

Whatever you want to say about Simpson and his coaching ability, you can’t deny he cares for his players.

I like Darling, but that right there is living in the past my guy. How long you mean to do it? Sheed kicked that goal, does that mean he also gets a free swing for the rest of his career?

Darling has had an amazing career, but supporters have waited all year for the Penny to drop with him and he hits a good bit of form, but it's simply not happening.

Add in his apparent back injury and he's borderline undefendable with what he's producing on field at the moment.

Moot point. He ain't getting dropped, he ain't retiring, so just let people complain.

Desperately need the likes of Hewett, Chesser, Long and Hough to come in and be more than competitive. Hewett especially as a midfield offensive playmaker/ weapon. Which is completely unrealistic of all them this year.

No pressure.

Flat, too many injuries. Not fun for any of the players out there.

Not even a Cockburn loss would lift the spirits much.

Halved last weeks loss...if we keep halving our losses, we'll have a win about 5 games later.
Another game over and closer to the bye...and mid season draft.
We were winning at one stage.
All the players on our injury list and coming back one day, is a strange kind of positive?
Continually halving losses is asymptotic. We will get closer and closer to parity but never actually reach it.

  • Positive
  • Allen ⭐
  • barrass looked better
  • Kelly disposal was much better this week
  • sheed back played reasonably and kept gaff out of the centre
  • Petrecelle did a great job stopping rioli's run off the HBF
  • Jones run
  • rotham better after getting the reaming of a lifetime last week .
  • Hunt been a great pick up
  • Duggan playing some midfield was a nice change did some ok things

  • Negative
  • culley injury
  • witherden and hurn lacking the willingness to create from defence
  • trew , Clark, west , Foley, all wafl players at best have no afl qualities
  • Xon and Edwards have some afl qualities but just can't find enough of the ball at AFL level
  • fitness and lack of run late in quarters is noticeable.
  • lack of proper key talls is annoying, waterman is not a ruck , rotham is not a key back
  • hurn playing on a guy 206cm

Positive

We came to play

Negative

Culleys knee
The second half
The lack of tackles sticking
Hurn and witherdens consistent kicks to the same spot on the ground every ****en kick in.

Simmo looked really down at the presser. Saying it's cos of culley but it's maybe more to it as well. Culleys career at wce could be over given that he doesn't have a contract come June.

Don't know how the club hierarchy just keep accepting their **** ups over the sports and conditioning drafting and everything in general. We have fallen In such a bad way since 2018. Its ****ed.

With all the blokes likely being let go this year, I doubt Culley's career would be over. Probably give him another rookie contract I reckon, so he can have a decent crack at it next year when he gets back.

Really pissed off today, lost Culley, lost our heads in the 3rd term & sick of Jack Darling's insipid efforts, if the bloke is in the team next week even without our lack of depth i'll be outraged.

I don't think it will be long before we are asking the AFL for some assitance in terms of our list numbers & not just for a game or two like last year, we are in complete & utter dire straits. The bye can't come quick enough and neither can that supposed review into our club's operations.
