Autopsy Round 8, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Essendon

Positives +

  • Despite the loss it was a great effort to the boys. Essendon are a top 8 contending side and we're a bottom 4 side coming and we had a six day break and they had 8 days.
  • Waterman a work rate beast. Made the most of his chances and could've been up on the Coleman if it wasn't for Cripps.
  • Reid a beast as always with his epic fend off and his classy ball use.
  • Gov and Barrass were great down back.
  • Hough shut down Stringer.
  • Long showed some class and polish that was missing from the team before he got injured.
  • A breakout game for Jack Williams, hopefully it will raise his confidence to play consistently on a higher level, looked good forward and was competitive in the ruck. If he keeps this up then he'll make it.
  • Yeo dominating when he was on.
  • Ginbey showed that he can also take strong marks down back. Will be a great target and hopefully he builds a tank and works on his inside game to be a beast.
  • Team was really good on the inside almost matching them in clearances and just beaten them in contested possession.
  • Darling starting to gain confidence and he halved a lot of contests. He'll get better as the year goes on.
  • Kelly stood up in the final term.

Meh =

Cole was ok without standing out.
= Witherden same as Cole.

Negatives -

  • FU*CK OFF CRIPPS FOR THAT BRAIN FART THAT COSTED US A SHOT AT GOAL YOU MOTHERFU*CKING ****** UNACCEPTABLE.
  • Turnovers at crucial intervals.
  • Still allowing easy transitions after our I50 delivery.
  • B.Williams poor kicking. Best suited to kick down the line.
  • Petch making some dumb decisions.
  • Potential hammy for Reid :(
  • Sad to see Yeo and Long get injured and they maybe out for weeks at best.
  • Ryan needs more time to build touch and confidence in the WAFL. Just looks way off.
  • Sheed just too slow for the fast contested ball gameplan. Shouldn't have leapfrogged over the likes of Hall, Burgiel. Back the the WAFL please.
  • L.Edwards mostly the same as Sheed. I don't think he'll make it with his lack of pace alone.

Final thoughts

The team is a lot more competitive this time since we almost beaten Essendon who are a contending top 8 side. We looked good on the inside but it's poor turnovers that is costing the team. The commentary said that Yeo's groin (yikes) is a 'minor' injury but I'm not surprised if it's several weeks.

We shouldn't be worried about winning as much as we all want the team to win, the team still needs a high draft pick to build the future premiership team. As long we're competitive in our losses such as this then it's all that matters for now.

Spot on. The only edit I would make to this is Cripps as the first negative. Directly cost us a win.
It's funny that I (and others like yourself) can stomach the loss to Essendon, but what raises our hackles is undisciplined behaviour, particularly after a truly herculean effort from Waterman (who was clearly gassed in the last quarter, despite being an elite runner) that cost him equal first in the Coleman race at the end of round 8.

Tom Barrass was epic.

Gov's ability to read the room late in the game when we had no bench and keep driving the ball forward was awesome

Kelly stood up when Yeo went down.

Duggan put in the hard yards.

Petruccelle and Ginbey started well but faded as the game went on. Still loved Ginbey's start to the game, especially the high leap for marks.

J Williams played brilliantly, including a deft kick inside 50.

Snakes form is incredible, hard to stop but we aren't generating enough inside 50s. He's doing a lot with very little. He'd kick 8 if we could get the ball in there.

Too many dump kicks to the Bombers spare man, granted though the Bombers applied good pressure so there wasn't many times a handball option was on.

I still think our players lack vision when they have the ball in the corridor in space they sometimes blaze away in excitement (also this is partially a coaching directive).

We were so slow in this game to press up and pressure the ball carrier. It just wasn't happening from the start, then out of half time the pressure increased and we turned the game a bit but it started to wane as players for tired.

Still can't believe Yeo and Long got injured, that's ****ed.

I thought Darling did ok, felt like he was applying pressure all game, Waterman's pressure for a key forward was also good.

Positive's:

Jack Williams breakout game. Officially our new best kick on goal.
Ginbey took another step forward.
Jake, what a ****ing man.
Harleys fend off fest.

Negatives:

Too many to list but special mention to match committee. I hope Don ****s the lot of you off.
Also injuries. I can't even say it.
Slight negative, obviously tragic for Jake to lose that shot in the goal square for his 4th. Who was that dumb campaigner? All the same J-train you've actually been pretty average with set shots this year and needs to improve that side of his game. Could easily have been kicking for 5 or 6 instead of 4 and it's a slight trend at this point for him to struggle past 35m.

I didn't get to watch the derby and didn't get to watch with the sound on (at a pub again). Loved the effort but we rely too much on too few, no wonder they get injured or so. Yeo injured is so shattering
..so Reid didn't do a hammy? Hope he and Waters aren't too sore. Shattered about the result, a bit more composure and could've won that, but proud of the boys.

****s sake that was frustrating

Worst part about it was once again getting an avalanche of injuries which means those in poor form are not dropped and we get stuck back in that cycle of getting belted but changing nothing.

Ryan and Sheed likely now keep their spots despite being shithouse simply because Long and Yeo go out

Devastated for Waterman to have his shot at goal stolen away from him after another impressive contested mark because Cripps' selfishness.
He deserved a 4th goal which I think would've put him on equal top for the Coleman, and put us within a goal.

No, he didn’t.

Don’t be a nuffy who thinks 120 minutes of football is decided by one single act just because it’s late in the game.

not guaranteed to cost the game, but they had probably a 50% chance to win the game before he did that and then after probably 20%

It was significant tho. We had serious momentum at this time.

No one knows what would have happend, but it's no stretch to Suggest our odds of winning are far greater without his brain fade.

I agree completely with everything you’ve said.

Old mate saying it ‘directly cost us the win’ is just incorrect.

We never really should have been that close, realistically we should have been put away by a significant margin but the players just kept on fighting.

When you see the absolute extreme repeat efforts of guys like Waterman, McGovern to see the effort applied by another senior player in Ryan put in arguably the worst game by a senior WCE player i've ever seen (yes, worse than gaff's worst) is a ****ing disgrace.

You can do all the ice baths and recovery and then you can run laps for the entirety of training on your own for the week Ryan.

So sad for Yeo and Long's injury looked bad too.

The ****ing disgrace the AFL is having us play off a 6 day break off the longest away trip in footy against a team who had played last week at home with a full 2 days extra. This is just more and more of the bullshit that should never happen.

Not overly angry at Cripps, stood up for a mate, went a touch to far but his opponent decided to show the strength of wet cardboard and sucked in the ump. He did have a poor game overall though.

That’s very disappointing (potential) news in relation to Noah :(

The worst part of the game. And Yeo of course.

Proud of the effort, the second half was a fantastic lift in comparison to the first. And dare I say, a tick to the new S&C team. Watching on TV, so may not be as accurate as being at the ground, but we seemed to run the game out really well. A 6 day break off the longest travel/trip vs a 9 day break. Huge improvement.

Happy with that game, despite the result. Effort was consistent, which is all you can ask for as a fan.

+ Kelly lifted. I threw shade at him early but you can't deny he stepped up, particularly in the last when he needed to as Yeo was dead to spark the resurgence.

+ Bailey got beaten but still stays involved rather than going into his shell is a good thing. 17 touches, 12 contested, 4 marks, 5 clearances, 18 hitouts and a goal is reasonable, albeit against an ageing opponent.

+ Waterman really is the king at the moment. We let him down tonight, looking at you Cripps. Bloke is in amazing form and is giving his all and setting the tone for that forward line. Sometimes you can see effort with players, and Waterman is bringing it for sure. Fun player to watch.

+ McGovern does some frustrating things, but he and Barrass did their jobs tonight.

+ Hough with yet another decent job on an opponent. Stringer kept to 9 touches and 1 goal.

- Typical game for Darling. Looked good at times, and then at other times he does stupid shit like taking players on when he shouldn't, knowing full well he can't break a tackle these days to save his life, or burning teammates in space to wheel onto his right boot for a snap shot at goal that doesn't even make the distance.

- Yeo dead again, how very typical. Poor fella, just as he's finally getting some consistency and confidence in his body.

- Schlong dead. Fingers crossed it's not as major as we think it is.

- Ledwards role is one of the more pointless roles i've seen in a long time.

- Johnson didn't really have much of an impact, hoped for a bit more from fresh legs.
