Review Slow starting Cats come storming home to defeat Tigers by 30 points

If we play the first half like we did the second, we beat the Tuggers 20 goals to 6. The Tuggers may be shit, but four quarters of that would surely beat GWS, Port, Melbourne, and at least be competitive against the Swans.
Yes but Tigers were absolutely gassed from manic effort in first half. Won’t happen against teams that haven’t been decimated by injuries like Tigers.

The Cats were terrible in the first half, finally showing a bit toward the end of the second quarter. I just think our mids outran the Tigers in the second half, and that was the catalyst for the surge that saw them win by 30 points in the end. The Tiger's young squad ran out of puff. If they could have kept that pressure up for four quarters, the Cats would have been in trouble. In the end, the likes of Holmes, Bowes, Bruhn, Atkins, Close, and Dempsey got the job done. We play the Swans, Carlton, & Hawthorn (who are playing well) next, and that is going to be very difficult for us, I feel. We could lose all 3 of those with the current form of the team.

I am not one to normally engage in the AFL issue of the week/content machine, but I find it extraordinary that the AFL decided to fundamentally change the way holding the ball would be interpreted from one week to the next. And one extreme to the other.

A stronger willed organisation would have waited to next season to make the change. But I hope it sticks, it was really needed. It kills the rolling maul.

I didn't give him votes and maybe, maybe he could have slotted into a vote, but I didn't mind Bruhns game either.
Kept persisting throughout, didn't use it as well as you'd hope at times but I thought he battled all night.
Well below Bowes and Holmes in terms of midfielders tonight but I still liked his game.
What a game from Bowes. I know he has had other good ones, but after last night, I think he has all but cemented his spot in the side, and completely put to bed all the steak knives talk from his critics. Definitely a best 22 player in my view.

Relieved to get the win. How bad was some of our tackling for most of the game? So undisciplined & giving away high frees, a bit of frustration perhaps. MOC looked angry all night.

Big games from Kolo, Dempsey, Bowes & Holmes.

There’s a bit of a trend of a guy reasonably clear with the ball running toward the goals handballing to a guy with his back to the goals under a bit of pressure, either coming out of defence or the middle. Sometimes it comes off, but you’d generally think the guy with the field open in front of him is best placed to kick it. And it is a little more predictable to teammates down the field.

Not as enamoured as some with Rohan’s short game. Appreciate the chasing efforts, but saw a few of the same things that can frustrate - all or nothing in marking, falling over, not affecting a spoil. Forever grateful for the 22 QF though. Collective forward failure letting Bolta continue to take all those marks in our 50.

We need someone to stand up, he is perfectly place to do it. That being said Richmond's inside midfield rotations are barely above VFL level. If he does it again next week I'll be a believer.

Because some of their slightly over 22 players are very young in game experience so lack the match hardened nature and fitness-see ryan dow cumberland and ralphsmith and miller. Granted some of those guys are spuds but they still didnt have the legs.
Plus lefau is older but young in afl terms and doesnt have the base afl fitness yet.

Make no mistake a more experienced and better side would have smashed us.

Yes a better team would've beaten us but this is desperately searching for excuses for Richmond. These players have no excuse for running out of legs and we had much less seasoned, younger players in much more important roles than Richmond.

Ryan's 2 years older and played twice as many games as Neale, our direct equivalent.

At the same age and after a similar number of games as Cumberland, Stengle and Close were playing key roles in a premiership. Nobody was saying they had to run out of legs cause they were too inexperienced.

Ralphsmith is a running machine and absolutely did not run out of legs.

Lefau has played VFL since 2016 after being in an elite sporting environment as a rugby league junior.

Dow has been in the system a year longer than both Holmes and Bruhn and spent 2020 in a full time elite environment not sitting at home under lockdown. It's embarrassing if he's getting outworked by younger players.

Miller has had 2 more preseasons than SDK, our direct equivalent, and looks miles more physically developed.

Only saw the first half, some weird match up decisions. Dempsey rolling off the wing to be the spare when they were entering 50 while MOC played forward of the ball was bizarro stuff.

I also don’t know who makes way, and I don’t think he is the answer, but they have to try Hardie. Finding the footy is a skill. This midfield group can’t do it consistently for four quarters.

My favourite piece of commentary for the night was Luke Darcy saying how brave Richmond's midfield had been but they were "getting worn down by more mature bodies".

The next centre bounce was Nankervis (29), Baker (26), Graham (26) and Martin (32) vs Conway (21), Holmes (21), Bruhn (21) and Bowes (26).
How he still has that job I don't understand.

I mean Richo is a bit dim as well, but at least he is likeable.

Ch7 have been barrackimg against us for some time now.

The Kolo one makes my blood boil, should have been 50m. Smashed him across the face, so that's a head injury.
Kolo livid having to go off, parades his bloody face to the ump (in my mind lol)
Clearly striking, but why do I get the feeling MRP will let it go?

All comes down to what the shit for brainses in the ch7 box said at the time.

June…Where are we?
I still have no clue whether we are good ,bad, or just ugly.
Really impressed with the younger guys stepping up though.
Clearly not a top 4 team….. fighting for a place in the eight. Knock off the top dogs and back up after the bye then we can reassess . Unlikely that will happen though.

Yep. Rohan contests hard to bring the ball to deck. Henry does not. Im not sure henry has a future unless he can find a new role. He is just too small and skinny for the role he is playing.
Yes if Henry has an opponent then he is Mr. Invisible….. ducks out the back to win Possies when he is all alone. Dees game a case in point … kicked three when all alone , yet when matched up against Lever got smashed and Lever was BOG.

It'll take a few weeks to get right but they needed to. It was beyond a joke

It was the right decision cause the previous interpretation was laughable. But it shows how incompetent the league is that they actually went with the "holding the ball doesn't exist" interpretation for half a season.
