Review Slow starting Cats come storming home to defeat Tigers by 30 points

If Sam got knocked out concussed we wouldn't be talking about Lefaos weak knees.

I still would have posted how shit it is if Lefau has done his ACL

I don't like to see injuries to any player, regardless of the player

And we've had players who in marking contests have jumped into an opponent, causing injury - back in 2011 when Hawkins could jump, he collected Toovey in a messy looking marking contest with the two players coming from opposite directions. Toovey was stretchered off & taken straight to hospital, but thankfully it was found the worse of the injuries was bruising to the chest

But this is what he looked like when being stretchered off

Just caught the replay, here’s my take:

* Again a slow start, this time against a 17th placed poo Richmond outfit, yeah they had a crack, but that can’t excuse the extremely average efforts I was seeing first half.

* Atkins, Holmes, Bruhn, Dempsey, Bowes all very solid.

* Still lacking team cohesion and structure, still a lot of players out of form.

* Tigers not being able to sustain their first half effort levels allowed us to come into the game, next week the swans will be up for 4qtrs, if we don’t match it, gonna be a looooooong game.

* Honestly, need a fit Dangerfield & Guthrie back into the team and in form, would improve us greatly but that just may not happen this year.

* 8-4, sitting 3rd, while that reads well, we’re just no where near it at the moment, but let’s hope going forward from now we see more of what we did 2nd half in the coming weeks.

Scott in his press conference talking of the positives of the Cameron move to the wing, how that helped with our ball movement through the middle of the ground & Cameron's impact in the 2nd half

Thinking it's a move we'll be seeing across the season

About 3:40 in the clip

I feel like Scott has achieved all he wanted as coach and now he's bored and messing with people

I love everything Rohan has done during his time at the club but not sure a 2024 version of him has the required versatility to be a sub if Ollie Henry is in the team - also really enjoyed watching Conway in the contest tonight, particularly his follow up and pressure acts at the stoppages
I think Rohan should be in the seniors ahead of Henry. I was mocked earlier in the year when I said I would have him best 22 over Henry but think after today people might remember how important Rohan was to us

Great comeback from such an awful first half.
A few additional observations to those already made-
  • a lot of Conway’s taps in first half were clearly to Tigers advantage. He changed that in second half, which contributed to the turn around.
  • all opposition teams are now routinely playing a form of tagging on Miers, Stewart and Cameron. Tommy still effective and moving to Cameron up field worked but Miers is still struggled with the negative's tactics.
  • we are still bombing to forward packs. Noticed the Tigers were running a set piece when they were in a similar attacking position - instead of landing the ball on the head of the pack they were chipping it in front and blocking the defenders out for the forward at front. Some really blatant blocks that should have been penalised but weren’t. Notwithstanding that was a good tactic - we have to be smarter with our forward set up and delivery.
Great effort by the younger cohort but lots to work on

When we are on top we are as good as anyone but it's very clear that our midfield has spells where we simply lose control of the game. It's happened in many games this season, fortunately, we were good enough to overcome that this week but we haven't quite been good enough to do it against the good teams.

That image is how it could have ended up for Sam tonight!
But yes I am very one eyed...
Albeit deep down inside its sad when any player gets injured for our entertainment i.e watching footy...
Whether they play for Richmond or not.

Would have been 6 weeks since the injury if he plays. Which is roughly what we expected. But they’ve been ultra cautious with injuries this year so if he’s not 100% I’d say there’s no chance.
We've done the old "He could play this week if we wanted him to" routine for two weeks now though.

The skipper just has to play. Big game against the best team in the comp on their home deck, with a bye to come if he ends up sore.

We're up against it anyway, but if Paddy's in there with an in-form Holmes, Bruhn, & Bowes, we're a chance.

Not a big chance, but a chance.

On TV you see more detail
At the ground to get to feel the mood.

Once again, opposition fast start, put Cats on the defensive.
At centre bounce, Cats just couldn't find clean possession.
When Cats did... rushed kicks fell directly into Tigers arms.
Max and Bruhn excited with their hard won possessions
Then frustrated, with repeated unpressured turnovers.
Cats chased the ball, leaving Tigers free on the outside.
Tigers attacked and won free kicks for making the play.
Luck and Frees had the ball trapped in Tigers F50
However Tigers squanders their numerous shots at goal.
Game was a grind, until mercurial Dempsey sparked Cats.
Suddenly the mood of the game changed completely.
Second Half the Cats started playing attacking footy.
Tigers panicked and gave away dumb free kicks.
Cats began to find form with fast transitioning play.
Tiger early resistance had folded like a wet napkin.

For a bloke they were calling the best player in the league J Cameron sure is average. There might be reasons but at the moment he doesn't look like top ten at Geelong. I guess we just have to hope he comes good.
Jezza we set a high standard too.

Everytime he he plays a sub par game it stands out.

If no Jezza no 2022 flag ..

A litany of issues in the first half stemming largely from the midfield. It’s the same story since Danger went down. Inexperienced, one-paced and simply unable to win enough ball around the contest.

I thought Kolodjashnij was great in the first half. Several big defensive efforts while the backline was once again under siege. For example, the play in the first half where Richmond made a deep forward 50 entry to Nigel Mansell one out with Kolo and Kolo initially tried to take possession but then shut it down with a big tackle. The commentators bizarrely praised Mansell for turning the play into a stoppage but did not acknowledge that Kolo stopped a near certain goal with no support.
Jack Henry was also much improved with some big overhead marks, reading the play well.

It’s hard to say whether Richmond faded or we lifted, but to Atkins and Bowes’ credit they lifted considerably in the second half, winning clearances and getting first use of the ball. I think Bowes should start in the guts until his form suggests otherwise. I’m not sure that Hardie is the answer to the midfield issue either. He replaces a Parfitt or Atkins if injured or down on form. There’s little likelihood of him playing with those aforementioned two.

Holmes once again looked dynamic, though I feel that he could rack up 30 disposals and the midfield issues are no closer to being solved. A good player in his own right, but we are still missing a consistent clearance winner with burst from the contest. Holmes may end up graduating to this role but he is not quite there yet IMO. Get Bailey Smith on the phone.

Despite the midfield issues there are green shoots - Dempsey looks a player, and when we are able to get clean possession at half back we can slice most teams open with our transition.

We will need a workmanlike performance from our mids in Sydney next week to get anywhere near the Swans. There is a fair gulf in class. Looking forward to seeing what Chris Scott has in store to bridge the gap.

Tbh love him on the wing. Sometimes it looks like we can't take a mark and transition without him. He's an extremely clever user of the ball. If he snags 2 a game while playing on the wing things are good.

Much harder to teach a guy Henrys' athleticism and consistent scoreboard impact than it is to teach him to pressure, and be physical in marking contests.

He's got the hard part done already, the rest will come with time.
I can't see Henry ever becoming a pressure forward though, so we need someone doing that if Henry's in the team.

I think Rohan should be in the seniors ahead of Henry. I was mocked earlier in the year when I said I would have him best 22 over Henry but think after today people might remember how important Rohan was to us

Just watched the replay and Rohan was great, especially last quarter. He was a bit BP tonight-the silent achiever. It's not like for like, although he is harder at the ball, more seasoned than Ollie. However I think he'll get in ahead of Neale.
I'd never mock- big fan of the big red!

Olly Henry being subbed out changed the game.

He's great when we're flying but really needs more strings to his bow.
Also helped that his replacement came on and IMMEDIATELY started applying elite pressure to contests and bringing the ball to ground and laying tackles.

Going to be very difficult to replace Rohan.

I'll be there next week At the SCG .
Mullin needs to play in the guts on Warner.
Oh dear god no, he needs to go to the VFL and play midfield and actually learn better positioning and getting the ball because he was frequently lost today and made bad decisions when he had the ball.
80% game time for 12 disposals, 4 of which were turnovers, only 3 tackles despite being in a defensive role and 41% disposal efficiency.

Can't afford passengers against Sydney and he currently offers zero upside to having him in the team.

On a number of occasions we left a free opposition player on our attacking side of the centre bounce with one of our guys on our defensive side.

Now I can understand that if we are going to dictate the tap back to our player but on a couple of occasions Conway got the tap and went forward straight to the tigers player. I didn’t understand the strategy at all there.

Richmond started this game very well, but only because we let them. The story this year is simple. We just don't have a midfield anymore. Uncompetitive.

The development of the new kids in there is going to take time. I'd wager the MC would be trying to target a trade to bolster the coalface.

This current midfield will not be winning finals against the likes of Melbourne, Collingwood, WB, Sydney, Port etc
