I think what he'll do is bring systems and set plays to make us up to date. I expect a much more team orientated side. Ross has his stars but what his sides do well is work hard and work for each other. Our depth is a strength and if we can utilise that with his systems based game plan I think we might surprise a few.

Great observation. Indeed it could be argued that Lyon’s teams have had elite top end talent but have lacked depth among the bottom 6-8 players in the team.

This has been arguably been a factor in the 2009, 2010 and 2013 Grand Finals and the 2015 Preliminary Final. It is entirely possible that Lyon’s systems and processes could be even more effective in a team with strong depth.

Top end talent may not necessarily offset this lack of depth in a team in big games or tight finals. Indeed our team, while lacking enough top end talent, has depth. RTB could really build a formidable tight knit unit that holds up in big games with such a list.

Agree on that, I think in this instance it wasn't about selling memberships and hope to supporters it was more just about clear communication. Seems like it needs to improve internally too given he told Ratten he was safe before the review was even conducted. He didn't need to say anything to Ratten, he just signed the guy to a 2 year extension. Leaves me thinking WTF is going on down there.
I thought I had enough of this. I really did ..... but ...... Basset said the reason Ratten was reappointed was because they gave him an undertaking
they would do that mid-season. We were 8-3 so they reappointed him - a "humane decision" to give Ratten every chance to show he was our coach
going forward or our next Premiership coach. Second half of the season was garbage so Basset took out the trash. It's quite simple. He said sorry.

Can we all move on please, the last 20 pages was arguing about how the sacking can be handled better.. It’s a sacking… Sounded like they were reluctant to re-sign Ratts at mid-season even , but given we were 8-3 and looked on the way to make finals.. because they promised to give Ratts an answer mid-season, they had to pull the trigger.. As with the sacking, we finished the season horribly, playing bottom 4 football.. So sacking is deserved.. the timing and approach will depend on lots of things we are not privy to.. so why even bother speculating.

Can we all try to get excited about a new beginning.. Some people like Ratts as coach, lots of other people on this forum don’t.. let’s just agree to disagree..

Would rather discuss how many wins do we think for a pass mark next year for Ross? I’d say 11 wins.. and a proper game plan/consistent performance.. of course we hope for a lot more wins than 11.
I agree with you, the sacking was deserved and I am excited for next year. Tentatively, but excited all the same.

I was pointing out some areas I feel the club can improve and it became a discussion - no hard feelings to anyone here it's just a chat lol

Think you are mistaking what I've got an issue with. I love the fact that we rectified the mistake and are now moving forward with what seems to be more enthusiasm, energy, hope, excitement. The way we went about it is what I have the issue with, hopefully we learn from it and tidy it up. Always areas to improve, our club or people at our club aren't exempt from that.

Definitely agree communication can improve. That said it's a hard balance to find. You don't want to say "the list is crap, we're starting again" because that demotivates the players and kills your memberships. Equally you don't want to say "we're a flag chance" because everyone knows that's bullshit. I don't envy them trying to find the middle ground which is frank but also positive - the appointment of RTB is probably the best thing they could do for that tbh.
Looking at our list with players in there prime like Steele , Crouch , Hill , Membery , Sinclair , Howard , Wilkie , Gresham and the younger ones we are looking to takes us to where we want to get - King who well could be a superstar the way he is developing , guys like Battle who has only scratched the surface of how good this kid can be and Coffield , Higgins , Clark who were all first round draft picks so we have definite players who could make the next step and that is even before talking about Jack Hayes , Sharman , Bytel , Windhager , Owens and Milera.

I'm more than expecting a move up the ladder and continue strengthening our squad with elite kids from the draft.

We are in the lucky position of improving our coaching staff without being a club that's just bottomed out. We are right on the precipice of being a good side and the jump from that 6th-10rh bracket into a genuine contender is spoken about alot in terms of how difficult it is.

I reckon we would've won v Port and Essendon this year with Ross in charge. That gets us to 13 wins right there. I expect a marked improvement across the board next year and don't believe that we need a year to learn the gameplan either. We are right there, with some tweaks and more accountability from the playing group we could surprise a few.

Looking forward to getting down to open training over the summer and seeing the differences. Fact that the players are already reaching out to guys who played under Ross is a good sign. They don't need to be back until November 22nd either but a group of them were at the club last week training.

We should've just sacked him when we knew, which was three and a half weeks before we told him. Give him more of a chance to get to another club as an assistant. Have some common courtesy at least. We unnecessarily sat on it.
Pres said he was trying to look at any other way they could get around it, which is why it was a month later than it would have been

You’ve made the same point 75 times. It’s not possible to convince everyone on the internet to agree with you

I know, it's bloody exhausting. Probably should direct this to those that want to continue the discussion with me, I've made my point pretty clear!

Well hopefully we do, but the reality is we won’t really know until we sack our next coach.

And hopefully that’s a long, long, long way into the future.

Was doing a quick read on Saintsational and noticed Tony74 say the reason for the hold up is they are awaiting a coaching assistant and support staff decision. They are hoping someone commits. This guy usually has pretty good info.

No idea why this impacts what Ross is doing, but maybe that will become apparent over the next few days.

I'm talking about anything, not specifically a coach sacking.

Well most of the other things we do have neither the media profile or emotion attached to the sacking of a head coach.

Sounds like lining up ALL the ducks rather than drip feeding announcements. Good, if true, just get it done and it's done.

There was a huge uproar on here about us saying we were fit enough then six months later saying we weren't. Insignificant but an example all the same

Or saying this was our window to win a flag then saying it wasn't lol.

I didn't care at first but if it keeps happening it becomes an issue and needs to improve

There was a window to win a flag, yes. There's no doubt. But the window was blocked by Alan Richardson as head coach.

If the problem is not the coach - where lies the problem?

It sounds to me like the presser that announces Lyon as coach will also introduce the entire football department.

The announcement will probably emphasise the plans for the club and explain how the results from the internal review have been integrated in to the football department.

Sounds like a really big announcement that is more than just announcing a new coach. The breadth of the announcement will be covered by the media and the minutiae can be discussed.

I don’t care what anyone thinks, I believe Lyon is the best coach in the AFL. If it wasn’t for the shit show of S&C department at Freo:
  • We wld have won several premierships doing his tenure
  • His rebuild would have been complete within four years
  • He would have never been sacked.

If you get Lyon, St Kilda will be 2nd favourite team. You guys will be box office. I am very jealous. My coach can barely string 2 words together.

Good luck!!!

I didnt pay much attention to Ratten at Carlton but seeing him go about it with this playing group he feels like Richo all over. The nice guy mentor has a place for sure but theres a time for it and there can be too much of it, could be a massive culture shock to the guys who have been around since the start of Richo era.
